IMPROVEMENT IN ROUND COMBS.

The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the Samet To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, ELIAS BROWN, of Wappinges Falls, in the county ot Dutchess and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combined Back and Side Combs; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, andV exact description ot' the same, reference being had to the accom panyingdrawing, marked Figure l, and making a part 'of this specification.

I am aware that two side combs have` been joined by au elastic band, and all madc in one piece. I am also aware that 'a back comb, havingr two side combs `hinged or pivotedto it, has also been made, which construction involved the use ot' several pieces, and much tting together. l I lay no claim to either of these things.

My invention consists in making, as a new article of manufacture, combined back and side com-bs, of one single piete. of material, or so that one single article shall serve the purpose of a back comb, and of two side combs, as will be explained.

To enable 4others skilled in the art to make and use my invention, vI will proceed to describe the same with reference to the drawings.

I take hard rubber', tortoise-shell, horn, or any other material used for making combs, and if the material be such as can be put into a plastic condition, the comb may be moulded into shape or form, and ornameuted at the 'same time, as at a.

The teeth b, that constitute the back comb A, may be partially or entirely moulded into shape or form, whilst the teeth c, that form the side combs B B, are cut in the usual well-known way. It' the comb be made. ot' metal, or any material notV readily moulded into form, then the teeth would have to be cnt or stamped out in the usual way.

lVhere. there are no teeth, as at d, the band may he narrow enough to admit of such yielding or elasticity as would adapt the comb to the head of the user or wearer. The teeth b may have such length as would be requisite forsecnring the hair, but will be much aided in maintaining their position, by the side combs,

'of which they are a part, and thus may be comparatively short. The article, when complete, makes a very handsome comb, is easily and readily used, and is quite inexpensive, when compared with anything else heretofore used for, the same purposes.

HavingT thus fully described my invention, V That I claim, as anew article of manufacture, is- A combined back and side combs, made in one and the same piece, substantially asand for the purpose described.
