'KENNETH JOHN WILSON, 0F NEW YORK, Y.
KNIFE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Oct. 12, 1909.
Application filed .Tanuary 20, 1909. Serial No. 473,307.
To all whom 'it may concern:
Be it known that I, KENNETH J OHN WIL- son, a subject of the King of Great Britain, residlng in the borough of Manhattan, city,
county, and State of New York, have 1n-v vented certain new and usefullmprovements in Knives, of which the following is a specilication.
My improvements relate to the class of knives in which the blade is movable lon tudina-lly in and with relation to the handi; and the invention consists in the specific construction andarrangement of parts hereinafter described and claimed, a distinguishing feature being the formation of one edge of the blade with inwardly inclined ratchet teeth in conjunction with a spring pawl' on the handle, whereby the blade may be read lly jarred, shaken or pulled out of 'the handle, more or less as required, but cannotbe pushed inward without drawing back the spring pawl. Being designed more par ticularly for use as a printers patch up or over-lay blade, this feature is of special importa-nce since it admits of the projection and manipulation of the blade by the hand only, while affording ample protection for the blade when not required for immediate use.
l Inthe accompanying drawinvs, Figurel l, is an elevation of the device with the blade partly protruding; Fig. 2,. is alongitudinal section of the handle, showing the blade in elevation. A y
The handle H, is formed With-'the longitudinal recess or socket h, of suilicient llength and capacity to receive and inclose the whole of the blade B, when not desired for use,4
and when it is desired to protect its point p, andcutting edge o, from contact with extraneous objects. The point p', of the blade is convergent centrally, and is double edged, to act as an incisor for printers use in patch up and over or under lay work. One longitudinal edge'e, is also formed as a cutting edge which may beapplied for the uses to which Aordinary pocket knife blades are ein loyed. Y
The other longitudinal edge e', is ormed with ratchet teeth 7*, which are inclined rearward, 'or away from the pointed end of the blade.I lContacting with these ratchet teeth l r, is a spring pawl s, which automatically engages the lateral shoulders of the' ratchet 'pointed end p,-while aifording but slight resistance to the movement of the blade in the opposite direction, or outward,-since the inclined sides of the ratchet teeth ride easily under the spring pawl, which latter has but slight resisting power to motion in that direction while sufficiently stiff to hold its shoulder s', locked with the transverse shoulder of any of the ratchet teeth against movement inward, or in the opposite 'direction. In other words the blade may be either shaken, jarred or dra-wn out of the handle to any extent desired, but cannot be pushed intoI the handle until the shoulder s', of the spring pawl s, is withdrawn from the ratchet teeth 1.
What I claim as my inventlon and desire to secure by Letters Patent is,
l. In a knife of the character designated, the combination of a pointed blade formed on one edge -With a seriesl of ratchet teeth, having shoulders transverse to Jthe blade and with sides inclining inward therefrom toward the pointed end of the blade, and a handle formed with a socket to receive the blade, and a springpawl '0n the handle arranged to engage the transverse shoulders of the ratchet teeth and prevent the pushing in of the blade while allowing the blade to be pulled, jarred or shaken outward for the purpose described.
2. In a knife of the character designated, the combination of a pointed blade formed with a longitudinal cutting edge on one side and on 'the other edge with a series of ratchet teeth having shoulders transverse to the blade and with sides inclining inward therefrom toward the pointed end of the blade, a
handle formed with a socket to receive thel 3. In a knife of the character designated,
the combination of a central convergent point, a longitudinal cutting edge on one side and on the other side with a series of ratchet teethhaving shoulders transverse to the blade and with sides inclining inward the blade to be pulled, jarred or shaken outtherefrom toward the pointed end of the Ward for the purpose described. blade a handle formed-With a socket to receive the blade', and a spring pawl cn the KENNETH JOHN WILSON 5 handle arranged to engage the transverse Witnesses:
shoulders of thesratchet teeth and prevent 4 D. W. GARDNER,
the pushing n of the blade While allowing GEO. WM. MIATT.
