Description
N.FEIERS, FNOTo-L THOGRAPMER WASHINGTON D C tiltited mes `lOl-IN BEATTIE, OF CHICAGO, lLLlNOlS, AS-SIGNOR TO WILLIAM BAKER, OF SAME PLACE.
Letters Patent No. 92,250, dated July 6, 1869.
IMPROVED HOISTING-APPARATUS.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters-Patent and making palt ofthe same To all whom fit will concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN BEATTIE, of Chicago, in the county of Cook, and State of Illinois, have iuvented a new and improved Hoistiiig-Apparatus; and I dovhereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification. l
'lhis invention vrelates to an improved hoisting-apparatus, which may he employed for unloading grain, in bulk, from cars, and consists in an improved arrangement of means for gearing and ungearing the main winding-drum with the driving-shaft; also, in a guiding-arrangement for the main rope.
lffigure l represents a plan view of my improved apparatus, and
Figure 2 represents a transverse section on the line x :v ot' fig. l.
A represents the main winding-drum, and B, the chain or rope working over the saine, and moving the grain-carrying device.
To the said drum, on one side thereof', two smaller p drums, O and D, are connected, and all-capable of working loosely on the driving-shaft E, when not in gear with the clutch F, splined to the shaft, vand arranged to engage with the main drum A, on the side opposite to the drums lC and D.
G represents a cell-crank, pivoted t'o the framing, and connected to the clutch F, for the purpose ot' throwing it into and out of gear with the drum.
The long arlnof the bell-crank is connected, by a chain, H, to the'drum D, and bya cord, I, to a weight, K, suspended over the grooved pulley L. 'lhese are intended to move the bell-crank, alternately, in oppo-l site directions; and a latch, M, is provided, to hold the bell-crank in the position to maintain the clutch ont of gear with the drum A. g
N represents a tappet-wheel, arranged on the end of the drum D, for raising the latch M, for disengaging the bell-crank G, and l O represents a -cord, wound upon the drum C in the direction opposite to that in which the chain- H is wound on the drum D, and carried, over-the pulley P, -to the weight Q, suspended thereon.
When the main rope has been drawn out suiciently for the work required, it is slightly slackened, to allow the weight Q to draw the drums backward sufficiently` to canse one of the tappets on the wheel N to strike the short end of' the catch M, and raise it, to disconnect the bell-crank, and allow the weight K to draw it back, and throw the clutch l? into gear with ythe drum A, thereby setting it into motion, (the said clutch heilig always revolving with the shalt E,) to wind the rope B, and move the grain.
The chain H is provided with astficient amount of slack to permit the rope B to be wound up sutliciently before the .said chain becomes taut, at which time it will move the hell-crank inward, andthrow the clutch out of gear with the drum, when the latter ceases to rotate, and the latch will catch the bell-crank, and hold it in this position.
In order to allow the tappet-wheel N to revolve in one direction past the end ot' the catch M, without any etiect thereon, the latter is provided with an articulated tappeti, S, which will rise, and let the tappets pass, when the wheel is moving one way, but will bear against a lug or shoulder of the catch, which maintains it in the path ofthe tappets of the wheel, when moving in the other direction.
By this arrangement, the main rope B may be drawn Out to a'n-y desired dist-ance, and the clutch be caused to gear with the drum for winding up with the same facility. p
'lhe main rope is provided, at the end of its guide,
with a system ot' guide-rollers, a b c, arranged to guide V it in three directions, to prevent entanglement, andl facilitate the working of the 'rope in any direction.
Having thus described my invention,
I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. 'lhe improved method of gearingand ungearingthe clutch F and drum A, by means of the drums O and D, actuated as described, the tappet-wheel N, Aand catchM, chain H, and weighted cord I, all 'substantially as and for the purpose speciiied.I f
2. The "combination, with the drum A, bell-crank, and clutch, of the drum C, weighted cord O, tappetwheel N, latch M, and weightedcord I.
The above. specitication of my invention signed by me, this 30th day of October, 1868. g
