COTTONePIGKING GLOVE Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 18, 1909.
Application filed November 10, 1908. Serial No. 461,979.
To all whom it may concern:
- Be it known that l, NEIL J. BAGGETT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Cisco, in the county of Eastland and State of Texas, have invented new and useful Improvements in Cotton-Picking Gloves, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in cotton picking gloves, and broadly and generally speaking it comprises a back, a wrist band, and 'linger and thumb stalls.
One obj ect of my invention is the provision of a cotton picking glove wherein the 'finger and thumb stalls are pivotally and detachably secured to the back of the glove, whereby to permit the user of the glove to have free use of his fingers and thumb, and to permit the stalls to be replaced when damaged or otherwise rendered unit for use.
Another object of the invention is the provision of a cotton )icking glove which may be readily and quickly applied and removed, which is simple, durable and efficient, and which may be manufactured and sold at a comparatively low cost.
With the above and other objects in view the invention consists inthe construction, combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter fully described and claimed and disclosed in the accompanying drawing, wherein,
Figure l is a top plan view of a cotton picking glove constructed in accordance with my invention, Fig. 2 is a bottom plan view of the glove, Fig. 3 is a detail plan view of one of the stalls, and Fig. 4 is a sectional view illustrating the manner in which the .tinge-r stalls are pivotally and detachably secured in applied position, the section being taken on the plane-indicated by the line 4-4 of Fig. 1.
Referring to the drawing by reference numerals, l designates the back, 2 the finger stalls, 3 the thumb stalls, and 4 the wrist band of my improved cotton picking glove.
T he back l of the glove may be constructed of any flexible material suitable for the purpose, and comprises a main or body portion 5, a rearwardly extending reduced wrist portion 6 and a forwardly and laterally extending reduced thumb portion 7. T he construction of the back l is such that when the glove is in use it protects the back of the hand and the wrist. The wrist band 4 is secured to the free end of the wrist portion 6, and is adapted to be secured about the wrist of the wearer of l lby the glove by means which preferably comprises a plurality of studs 8 and sockets 9.
The finger stalls 2 and thumb stalls 3 are constructed of rubber or any other material suitable for the purpose, and are pivotally and detachably secured in applied position. means which preferably comprise studs l() and sockets ll. The studs l() are carried by the thumb and 'linger stalls while the sockets l1 are carried by the back of the glove. The finger stalls 2 are secured to the forward free edge of the body 5 of the back 1, and the thumb stall 3 is secured. to the forward edge of the thumb extension 7.
As the thumb and finger stalls are constructed of elastic material, the glove is adapted for use by persons having various sized hands, the stalls snugly engaging ends of the thumb and iingers. ln view of the flexibility of the back 1, and the thumb and finger stalls, and the pivotal connection of the stalls with the back, the glove does not interfere with the opening and closing of the hand. rlhe thumb and inger stalls are provided with enlarged entrance openings l2 which permit the glove to be readily and quickly applied.
ln practice two gloves are used by each cotton picker, and the construction of the gloves is such that the hands of the operator are protected from injury. lf found necessary the under surfaces of the thumb and linger stalls may be roughened.
lt should be apparent from the above description taken in connection with the accom# panying drawings that I provide a glove which is admirably adapted for the purpose for which it is intended and which may be manufactured and sold at a comparatively low cost.
Changes in the form, proportions and minor details of construction may be made within the scope of the claims without departing from the spirit of the invention.
Having thus fully described the invention, what is claimed as new, is
1. A cotton picking glove comprising a back, sockets secured to the back, 'linger and thumb stalls, studs secured to the 'linger and thumb stalls, said studs being adapted to engage in the sockets to pivotally and detachably secure the finger and thumb stalls to the back, and means for securing the glove in ap plied position, said means being secured to the back.
