ALBERT M. MAYNARD, OF SAVOY, MASSACHUSETTS- Leners Patent No. 84,203, darai November 17, 186s.
IMPROVEMENT IN' WATER-WHEELS.
To all whom it 'mu/y conce/m:
Be it known that I, ALBERT M. MAYNARD, of Savoy, in the county of Berkshire, and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Turbines; and I do hereby declare that the following is'a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specication, in which- Figure l is a top view of my improved turbine, having a portion of the Agate-chamber broken away.
Figure 2 is a central vertical section ofthe turbinewheel and shaft.
Figure 3 is a central vertical section of the turbine-` Wheel, gate-chamber, and barrel.
The nature of this invention relates to those horizontal water-Wheels known as turbines.
It consists in the peculiar V-shaped formation of the turbine-buckets, arranged on the inner side of a cylinder-box, in combination with a diaphragm, through which the shaft passes, together' with other' devices, perfecting the-whole, as will hereinafter be more'fully set forth.
In the accompanyingplate of drawings, the cylindrical box is shown at a a, and contains the V-shaped buckets-b b b,r&c., which are affixed to the side ofthe cylindrical box, as shown.
A horizontal plate, d, forms a diaphragm across the interior of the box a a, and is axed .to the angles c cc, Sto., of the buckets, as shown.
This diaphragm is joined to the short cylinder or hoop e e, which is afxed to the lower part of the buckets, thereby forming the ordinary bucket-space, common to lmany tm'bines.
The hub fis afxed to the diaphragm, and serves to furnish a suicient bulk of metal for properly attaching the wheel to the shaft g. y
A cross-bar or bridge-tree, h, having a step-box', i, furnishes a step or fixed gudgeon to the shaft, which latter has also an upper bearing, j, supported vby the arched braces k, as shown.
The turbine-wheel, as shown at fig. 2, revolves, without contact, within the external barrel A A, which serves as a scroll.
This barrel is constructed with a diaphragm, B, and vertical chutes, C O, three or more of which chutes are closed and opened by a corresponding number of pivoted gates, AD D, as shown.
These gates are connected, by rods Z l l, to a collar,
on, working freely on the sleeve a, rising from the diaphragm B, as shown. 4'
The collar m is formed with an arm, o, which terminates in a toothed segment, p, engaging with the pinion q on the shaft lr, which latter bears the hand-wheel s, by which means the gates are opened'and closed, o1* adjusted, to admit the requisite supply of water.
The external barrel A A is flanged to and rests upon the shoulder a of the fiume, as shown.
When. the gates are opened, the water is forced between the chutes O 'C C, and impinges against the` angles c c c of the bucket. The impact of the water forces the turbine to revolve, and the downward action of the water upon the lower parts ntf/1:, 85e., of the buckets causes additional impetus to the wheel.
From practical trial, I have demonstrated its elijciency, and, by estimates, have determined its cheapness.
Itdispenses with the extensive scroll, and is complete in itself, requiring only to be placed in the fiume. Thus the labor and expense usually attendingthe putting in o f turbines are avoided.
Having thus described my invention,
'I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1 The chutes C, gates D, diaphragm B, and exter- ,nal barrel A A, in combination with the turbine-wheel,
all constructed and arranged to operate substantially as described.
2. The combination and arrangement ofthe V-shaped buckets b, within the box a, diaphragm (l, hoop c, external band A, diaphragm B,carryiug the sleeve n, the collar m., rods l, chutes G, and gates D, as herein described, for the purpose specified.
' lALBERT M. MAYNARD.
