APPLICATION FILED SEPTV 11. 1905v will llllllll//Illl vih-Labios mimo:

Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented March 6, 1906.
Application filed September 11, 1905. Serial To 278.013.
Taal] .when-tit m/a/y concern,.-
Be it known that I, ROY CONKLIN, a `citizen ofthejUnit'ed States, .residing at Toledo, in the-county of Lucasand State of' Ohio, have .inventednew .and useful Improvements in Fountain-Pens'jof which the following is a specification'.
This invention. rela-tes toy fountain-pens and its object is .to improve the construction of that class of fountain-pens knownas "self- Afilling"'-'-su'ch,' for example, .as the pen -covered lby my prior patent, No. 685,258, dated October 29, 1901. In .that pen the ink-reservoir consists of' .a slender rubber bag vin- -closed ina rigid .barrelgor holder and communicating at one end with the pen-section. A presser-bar lis ilafid along one side of the bag between Vit'and `the barrel, .and a rib `on the ,'-bar projects out through va slot in the barrel,
yso .that by pressingon the rib the bag can Vbe .'lcompressed.' l lf when-so compressed the pen is dipped 4into Va 'supply-of ink and the pressure on lthe rib is then relieved, the resiliency of the rubber bag causes 1t to resume its "formerv'expanded shape, and in so'doing it sucks itself ffull .of ink. A locking-ring pass- Y ingthrough'a slot in therib is then turned to prevent accidental inward movement of the riband presser-bar until 1t is desired to refill .v
the pen. v
The' present invention has for its object the provision of a novel locking device for they rib-and presser-bar of simple, safe, and eiiect- :ive construction, 4whereby.accidental unlock-A Iingfofjthe rib .and presserebarxis prevented.
The .inventionconsists oa latching orlocking member pivoted to the ,pen-holderbarrel andengageable with the rib'to `locl the riband :presser-.bar against accidental'depression. It further :consists in anovel 'construct-'ion of rib and slot, whereby the engagement of thellat-c-h- `ing vorv lockin r :member with the rib shifts the sbin the i the 'pen-barrel; thereby doubly locking the trib.. 'and` presser-bar.
ot and causes said rib to engage ltstill Vfurther consists in Vfeatures of construction vset I-forth in detail hereinafter.
v The. barrel 1 is of hard rubber or other rigid material and 1incloses the ink-reservoir L?, oiv elastic rubber. The presser-bar 3 lies along one side of the reservoir 2 and has a rib 4 passing out through a slot 5 in the barrel fl and held normally projected by the reservoir 3. 'The slot .5 is of greater length than the rib 4, so that the latter may lmove longitudinally therein, and the ends of said slot are preferably beveled inwardly. @ne end of rib 4 is beveled and a. trifle undercut at 6 to overhang the corresponding end of slot 5, while the opposite end ofthe rib 4 is undercut at 7, thereby providing the shoulder 8. The undercut portion 7 is rounded at both sides, as shown at 7.
Pivoted on a screw, pin, or other suit-able device 9, secured to the barrel 1, is a latching also adapted to engage under the shoulderS.
The longer end oi lever or latching member 11 is vbowed or humped at 12 and terminates in a. rounded button 13, adapted by virL .tue of the inherent lresiliency of the lever 10 to snap into or out of va notch or recess v14 .in
' barrel l lwhen the rib 4 and vpresser-bar 3 are Abeing latched or released. Then the button 18 is in the recess .14, the rib and presserbar lare securely latched, so that accidental release is practically `impossible and the rib cannot be pressed in to collapse 'theink-reservoir 2;
Then the rib 4 and presser-bar 3 are to be locked after filling the pen, the latching inember 10 is swung into longitudinal alinement with the barrel 1 and slot 5, during which operation the .rounded end 11 enters beneath the shoulder S and presses in a cani-action fashion against the rounded portion 7, which causes the rib 4 to be shiftedlongitudinally in slot and the portion `6 to overhang or engage the end of slot 5', .thus -doubly locking the rib. To release the rib., the latching member or lever y is swung aside, as shown in Fig. 3, whereupon the rib 4 may be shifted llongitudinally in slot 5 and then pressed 1nwardly to'co'llapse the ink-reservoir.
Having thus described my invention, wha-t- I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, isw
