A. W. SMITH.
Stovepipe Cleaner.
Patented Nov. 5, 1867.

A. W. SMITH, OF PIERBEDPONT, NEW. YORK.
Letters Patent No. 70,636, dated November 5 1867.
IMPROVEMENT IN APPARATUS FOR CLEANING STOVE PIPES.
TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN: 7
Be it kn'own'that I, A. W. SMITH, of Pierrepont, in the county of St. Lawrence, and State of New York, have invented a new and improved Apparatus for Cleaning Stove Pipe; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and-exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 is a vertical longitudinal section of a stove pipe, taken through the line'z x, fig. 2, showing my mproved apparatus. v
Figure 2 is a detail sectional view of the same, taken-through the line y y, fig; 1.
Similar letters of reference indicate like parts.
My invention has for its object tofurnish an improved means by the use of which horizontal stove pipe may be readily and quickly cleaned without its being necessarytotake down the pipe or soil the room; and it consists in the scraper formed by the combination of the semicircular plate, guard or brace-wires, handle, and spring with each other, the whole being construetedand arranged as hereinafter more fully described.
A and B represent the vertical and horizontal parts of a T-pi'pe. The lower end of the vertical pipe A is connected-with a stove. One end of the horizontal pipe B is connected with the chimney, and the other or short end is provided with a removable cap, 0, which is taken off when it is necessary to clean the pipe. D is the plate of the scraper, which is semicircular in form, and of sucha size as to move freely through the pipe. The plate' D may be made of sheet or plate metal, or-of some heavier material. To the pl-ate D is securely attached the end of the handle E, which may be made of the necessary length for cleaning pipe of a particular length, or it may be made in parts hinged or jointed to each other, so that its length may be adjusted as required.
F are wires, the ends of which are passed through'holcs in the scraper-plate D. They are then bent-so as to pass beneath the edge of the said plate, and their other ends are secured to the handle E. These wires not both as braces to strengthen the scraper, and as guards to prevent the edge of the said plate D from catching upon the ends or edges of the various lengths of pipe. H is a steel spring, one end of which is attached to the handle E, and its other end rests against the interior surface of the pipe, to hold the circular. edge of the scraper plate D close up against the pipe, especially when cleaning the sides and top of said pipe. 1
I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The scraper, formed by the combination of the semicircular plate D, handle E, brace and guanhwires F, and spring H with each other, substantially ashcrein shown and described, and for the purpose set forth.
, i A. W. SMITH.
