Description

MATTHEW CHAPMAN, or GREENFIELD, MASSACHUSETTS.
Letters Patent No. 70,525, dated Novcmer 5, 186'l. v
IMPROVEMENT IN TABLE' GUTLEBY.
lc Srlicbnlc nient tu' ir tlgrsc 'tcttas lntcnt :mt uniting part nf llge sante.
TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCEEN:
Be it known that I, MATTHEW CHAPMAN, of Greenfield, in the county ot' Franklin, and State of Massachusetts, have inventeda nen and useful Improvementy in Table Cutlery," and that the followingdescription, takenin connection with the accompanying drawings, hereinafter referred to, forms a. full and exact .specificittouof the same, wherein I have set forth the nature and principles of my said improvements, by which my invention may he distinguished frein all others of a similar class, together with such parts as I claim and desire Ato have secured to me vby Letters Patent.
This invention relates to an improvement in table cutlery, and-it consists in forging or swaging knives and forks from one picceot' steel, as ivill be hereinafter more particularly described, whereby a piece of cutlery is .produced far surpassing in durability that made in the ordinary manner, and at the same timeA reducing t considerable extent the cost of manufacture. In the accompanying plate of drawings my'improvementlin table cutlery is illustrated- Figure 1 being'a side view of a table-knife made according to the present invention, and
Figure 2 aseetion through the length of the handle portion to the knife, with the blade in side View,
Similar letters of reference indicate like parts.
In the manufacture of table cutlery, both knives and forks, from steel, as heretofore practised, ithas been the custom to forge the blade and tang, with or without a holster, from one piece, and then fasten the handle to the tang with cement, rivets, or otherwise, but by this construction the fastening of the handle soon loosens and becomes detached. By the present invention this difficulty is avoided.
A, in the accompanying plate of drawings, represents the blade portion to the knife, B. the bolster, and C the handle, all constructed or formed out'of one solid piece of st eel, by forging or swaging, with the samerelative proportions each to the other as when manufactured separately, or of dierent pieces of metal or other material, and attached together as heretofore, the width ofl the handle and of the knife-blade being in directions, in the present'instanee, at right angles to each other. l
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent- As a new -article'of manufacture, table cutlery having vthe blade, bolster, and handle forged or sivagecl from one solid piece of steel, substantially as herein described.
. MATTHEW CHAPMAN.
