Description

No. 68I,227. Patented Aug. 27, l90l.

PLOW.
(Application filed Dec; 22, 1900-) (No Model.)

u: NDMIB rrsns ca, movo-umo. WASNiNQTON. u. c.
. UNITED STATES To ctZZ whom, it may concern: Be it known that I, JAMES W. JOHNSON, a
citizen of the United States, residing at Savj age, in the county of Florence and State of j South Carolina, have invented new and useful Improvements in Plows, of which the following is a specification. This invention relates to new and useful improvements in plows; and its primary object is to provide a device of this character having a runner attachmentsecured thereto, 1 whereby the depth of the furrow cut by the 3 plow may be readily regulated.
Afurther object is to provide a device of this character which can be quickly attached to plows of various forms and which is simple and durable in construction.
With these and other objects in view the invention consists in providing a slotted strip having a curved arm extending from the upf per end thereof. This arm receives a bolt, j which engages. the end of a link which is hinged at its lower end to a runner of peculiar construction. This runner is provided upon opposite sides with laterally-extending flanges which are adapted to prevent the same from cutting too deep into the ground. 3 The forward end of the runner is hinged bei tween ears extending from the lower end of the slotted strip, and the slot within this strip is adapted to receive a heel-pin extending I from the stock of the plow.
The invention also consists in the novel con- ;struction and combination of parts hereinafjter more fully described and claimed, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, showing the preferred form of my invention, Y and in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view showing the device attached to a plow; and Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section through the strip, arm, and
link and showing the runner in elevation.
Referring to the figures by numeralsof reference,l is a plow-beam having suitable han- I dles 2, provided with a downwardly-extending stock 3, at the lower end of which is secured-a shovel or plowshare 4:. A heel-pin I 5 extends from the rear surface of the stock 3 and is adapted to be'secured at any desired point within a slot 6, which extends longitudinally within a strip 7. Ears 8 are formed PATENT OFFICE.
JAMES W. JOHNSON, OF SAVAGE, SOUTH CAROLINA.
PLOW.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 681,227, dated August 27, 1901. Application filed December 22, 1900. Serial No. 40,797. (No model.)
therebetween is an ear 9, formed at the end of arunner 10. This runner is provided upon opposite sides with laterally-extendin g flanges 11, which are arranged in the same horizontal plane and are adapted to limit the depth of the cut made by the runner. A curved link 12 is provided with cars 13, which extend on opposite sides of the runner 10 at its upper edge, and these ears are pivoted upon a pin 14, extending through the runner. Abolt is secured within the upper end of the curved link 12 and extends into a longitudi nally extending slot 16, for1ned within a curved arm 17, projecting from the upper'end of the strip 7, before referred to. Suitable means, as a nut 18, is provided whereby the bolt 15 can be readily secured at any desired point within the slot 16. It will be seen that by adjusting the bolt 15 within the slot 16 the angle of the runner to the stock 3 maybe readily changed and the depth of the furrow cut by the plowshare is thereby regulated.
From the foregoing description it will-be seen that the device is simple in construction, durable, and cheap to manufacture, and that the same can be readily attached to plows of various forms. By providing the slot 6 within the strip 7 the attachment may be adjusted from or toward the lower end of the share.
In the foregoing description I have shown the preferred form of myinvention; but I do not limit myself thereto, as I am aware that modifications may be made therein without'departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages thereof, and I therefore reserve the right to make such changes as fairly fall within the scope of my invention.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. The combination with the stock of a plow; of a strip adjustably secured thereto, a runner hinged to the lower end of the strip,-
laterally-extending flanges to said runner, a
slotted arm extending from the strip and a link hinged to the runner and adjustably secured within the slot of the arm.
2. The combination with the stock of a plow; of a heel-pin extending therefrom, a strip having a longitudinally-extending slot j at the lower end of this strip, and pivoted therein adapted to receive said pin, a runner from one end thereof, a runner hinged to the lower end of said strip, laterally-extending flanges upon opposite sides of the runner and lying in the same horizontal plane, and a link hinged to the upper edge of the runner and I 5 adj ust-ably secured to the slotted arm.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
JAMES W. JOHNSON.
