TATES vA'rnN HENRY R. WEBB, OF WHIPPANY, NEW JERSEY, ASSIGNOR, BY MESNE ASSIGNMENTS, TO THE WEBB FOLDING BOX COMPANY, OF NEWARK,
NEW JERSEY.
FOLDING BOX.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 668,550. dated February 19, 1901.
YApplication filed January 31,1900. Serial No. 3,426. (No model.)
To cir/ZZ whom. it may concern,.-
Be it known that I, HENRY R. WEBB, of Whippany, in the county of Morris and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Folding Boxes, of
which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
My invention relates to improvements in folding boxes; and the object of my inven-` folding box, the construction of which will be hereinafter specifically described and,V
claimed.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar gures of reference refer to similar parts throughout both views.
Figure 1 is a perspective view of the open box embodying my invention, and Fig. 2 is a plan of the box-blank.
The box, like other folding boxes, canbe made of any suitable material, and the blank is of a generally rectangular shape, as shown in the drawings, having a bottom part 10 scored around-that is, formed by the scorelines 11 and 12, the former being parallel and running crosswise of the blank and lengthwise of the box and the lines 12 extending nearly the length of the blank and intersecting the lines 11 at the box-corners.
The bottom 10 has end pieces 13 projecting from the opposite ends thereof and adapted to fold up to a vertical position, as shown in Eig. 1, and projecting from the side edges of the bottom are the side pieces 14, which also are adapted to fold to a vertical position and have end flaps 15, which are formed outside the score-lines 12 and which are separated from the end pieces 13, as the drawings show. These end flaps 15 are notched on their top edges, as shown at 16, so that when the upper corners of the iiaps are tucked through the slots 17, which are made in the end pieces 13, the notches 16 will engage the box ends at the tops vof the slots 17 and so hold the sides and ends of the box securely in place. The iaps 15 should be the full height of the box, so that they will support and strengthen the end thereof, and will be sufficiently stiff to assist in holding the box upright after it is shaped. These slots 17, referred to, can be made at any suitable angle; but they preferably diverge toward the top of each end piece, so that the end iaps can be made to easily engage the slots.
It will be noticed that the parts just described when set up as in Fig. 1 form a rectangular box-body.
The end pieces 13, it will be observed, are the full width of the box, and consequently when the box is set up each end piece will extend snug up to the sides and into the corners, thus making the box exceptionally stiff.
Projecting from one of the side pieces 14 and separated therefrom, preferably by a score-line 19, is a cover 18, which is adapted to fold inward upon the box-body, and at the free edge of the cover or top is a front ap 20, which is adapted to fold down over the front side of the box, and to this end it is preferably separated from the top piece of the cover by a score-line 21. Where the preferred form 0f cover is used, as shown in the drawings, the flap 20 is employed, and this is preferably cut or notched at its free or lower edge, as shown at 22, so that the thumb can grasp the box-body through the flap in order that the cover may be easily manipulated. The top piece 1S of the cover has side wings 23, separated from the top piece by the score-.lines 12, and these wings are adapted to overlap the ends of the box, thereby giving it a desirable finish and also, what is more essential, preventing spilling of the contents of the box. These wings 23 are rounded or cut away at their inner edges, as shown at 23a; but this conformation of the wings is not material. At the outer ends of the wings 23 are locking-[laps 24, which are separated from the wings by the score-line 21, and the wings are separate from the flap 20, so that they can be conveniently folded over upon it, as shown in Fig. 1. The aps 24. are notched,as shown at 25, and, with the notches, are shaped IOO substantially like the locking-flaps 15,already referred to, and when folded over upon the outer side of the flap 20 the flaps 24 have their corners tucked into the slots 26 in the flap 2O and the notches 25 engage the flap 2O at the upper edge of the slots 26, thus making a corner-lock substantially like that on the box-body and already described.
When the box is set up, the end pieces 13 are turned up vertically, the side pieces 14 turned up to form the box sides, the end flaps 15 brought around against the outer sides of the end pieces 13, and the corners of the aps 15 are tucked into the slot 17, as already described, thus completing the box-body.
To form the cover, the Wings 23 are turned up at right angles to the top part 18 of the cover, the flap 20 turned up also at right angles to the part 18, the flaps 24 folded over against the outer face of the flap 20, and the corners of the flaps 24 tucked into the slots 26, so that the slots and notches 25 will interlock, as described, and the cover thus formed is a hood, as shown clearly in Fig. 1, which closes down over the body of the box and makes a very tight cover.
From the foregoing description it will be seen that the box is very simple, very oompact and strong, and very easily manipulated. It will be also understood that, as is usual with boxes of this character, score-lines are shown Wherever a bend is to be made; but such score-lines are not always necessary. They are, however, usually made, as the box works easier when properly scored.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The herein-described box-blank comprising a bottom portion, end pieces the full Width of the said bottom portion projecting from opposite ends or sides thereof, the said end pieces being slotted between their upper and lower edges, side pieces projecting from the two remaining sides ofthe box-bottom, flaps 15 extending from opposite ends of the side pieces and independent of the end pieces, said flaps having notches 1G therein, a cover portion 18 projecting from one edge of one of the side pieces, a ap 20 projecting from the free edge of the cover portion 18, said Hap having slots 26 therein, wings 23 at the ends of the cover portion, and locking-flaps 24 at the free ends of the Wings, said fiaps having notches 25 to engage the slots 26 aforesaid, all substantially as described.
HENRY R. WEBB.
