Be it known that I, SAMUEL W. ENTREKIN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Belt-Punching Pliers, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.

This invention relates to an improvement on the combined cutter, punch, and pliers covered by my patent of August 26, 1S8-l, No. 304,089, the object of the present improvement being to provide the pliers with a stripper which will remove the belt from the punch when the pliers are opened after a hole has been made in the belt. To this end the jaw of the pliers which does not carry the punch is provided with a stripper consisting of a right-angular piece of sheet metal attached to said jaw by a screw or otherwise and having a hole registering with the belt-receiving recess of the jaw. This stripper when removably attached to the pliers may be taken off and replaced by other strippers having openings of different sizes to accommodate round belts of diflerent diameters, and whether removably attached or not the stripper may be readily applied to the belt-punching pliers already in use and Will in no way interfere with the efficiency of the tool as pliers.

In the drawings, Figure l is a side View of a pair of cutting and punching pliers provided with my improvement, and Fig. 2 is an enlarged detail view of the stripper. Fig. 3 is a view similar to Fig. 1, but showing the stripper fastened to a jaw of the pliers in a manner different from that shown in Fig. 1.

A denotes the handles of the pliers, and B the jaws thereof, the two members of the pliers being pivotally attached together in the usual manner, as by a pin or bolt 0. In the form of pliers herein shown the inner faces of the jaws thereof are provided withv half-round recesses a to receive a belt while the end thereof is being cut oif by the blade or cutter b, which shears against the opposite jaw of the pliers, and the said jaws are also provided with half-round recesses c to receive a belt while being punctured by the punch d. The inner faces of each of the jaws are also preferably provided with one or more small recesses c to enable the pliers more readily to grasp a hook or link which is to secure the ends of a round belt together in propshapc.

The jaw of the pliers which does not'carry the punch is provided with a stripper f, consisting of a small piece of preferably sheet metal bent into right-angular form and having a hole or opening g arranged to register with the recess 0, which is to hold the belt while being punched. This stripper is also preferably provided with a hole h for the reception of a screw t' to attach the stripper to the jaw 13, the said screw being tapped in a threaded hole formed for its reception in the outer face of said jaw. When thus detachably secured in place, as by the screw 1', the stripper may readily be removed to be replaced by other strippers having holes 9 of different sizes to accommodate belts of different diameters.

Instead of attaching the strippers to the plier-jaws by screws, as just described, they may be permanently secured thereto, as by riveting or soldering, or may be removably attached by providing the jaws of the pliers with undercut recesses'to receive beveled or dovetailed shanks of the strippers, as shown in Fig. 3, and in such case the dovetailed shanks, fitting in their correspondinglyformed recesses or guideways, will enable .the strippers to be readily slid into or out of place, the dovetailed shanks fitting in their recesses with sufficient closeness, so that the strippers will be held in place frictionally.

From the foregoing it will be understood that I provide belt-punching pliers with a stripper which may be applied thereto at little cost, which may be removed to enable interchangeable strippers having belt-openings of different sizes to be used, if desired, and which stripper may readily be applied to different forms of belt-punching pliers now in use. The stripper may be readily removed if it be desired to use the tool without it.

integral with the jaws thereof,- and I do not therefore claim belt-punchin g pliers provided with strippers, broadly; but,

Having thus described my invention, I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent-- The improved belt-punching pliers herein described comprising jaws havin g belt-receiving recesses and a stripper consisting of a thin, 10 right-angular piece of metal attached to one of the plier-jaws and having an opening re istering with the belt-receiving recess of the jaw to which it is attached.
