sPEcrrrcArroN forming par of Letters Patent No. 655,024, dated iuly 31, 906. Application filed November 4,1898. Serial no. 695,434.. (No man To all whom it hi/ ay cortcefm e it knownthatl, COLUMBUS GLSHIPLEY,
JL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Dayton, in the county of Montgomery and State of Ohio, have invented certain new. and
useful Improvements in Paper Pails or .Vessels; and I do herebyde'clar'e that the following is a full,]clear, and exact description of the invention, which willenable others skilled in such position and so arranged as to form. in addition to a cover aformer and support for the top flaps of the pail and which reinforces said top flaps tosuch an entent that a '25 lid or cover is provided withsuch strength as to renderit capable of withstanding any pressure or weight that is aptto be placed thereon when the cover is closed over the contents of the pail. With this end in view certain structural features are provided whereby the said cover, former, and support are themselves supported in the mouth of the vessel.
Another object of the invention is to provide a simple and efficient means for securing the folded sides of the vessel, for securing the bail or handle, and for maintaining the top flaps closed over the mouth of the vessel.
These several features will be described in detail, reference being first had to the accom- 0 panying drawings, of which- Figure l is a plan of the blank from which the bottom, sides, and top flaps are produced.
Fig. 2 is a plan of the blank constituting the cover, former, and support for the top flaps.
5 Figs. 3, 4, and 5 are different views of the sheetmetal fasteners. Fig. 6 is a view of the pail open. Fig. 7 is a view of the pail closed. Fig.
8 is a view of the {pail open with portions broken out to better illustrate the folds or improvements in several views. When the blank is thus folded,
the center square A becomes the bottom of the pail, B B and O O the four sides, and F F and G Gthe four intervening sides folding inwardly between the sides B and O and coming together in the usual manner. These parts F and G when thus folded inwardly bring the edges of sides 0 C in line with the similar edges of sides B B, and the side folds F and G are then folded over the outside of sides B B and secured thereto in a manner hereinafter described. The continuous edges 5 b and f f of the sides B B and F F are folded outwardly alongthe crease-lines bb and f f to stiffen orreinforce the upper edges'of said sides B B and F F. The said side edges b b and ff are slit at s s to enable the sides B B and F F to bend .out on their dividing crease lines. H H are the top flaps. Between said flaps and the side folds G G are additional folds I I and J J. I The latter folds and parts H-H fold inwardly.
-K designates a cover. for the mouthof the pail, and consists of a piece of cardboard of suitable thicknessto provide a support for the top flaps and which also reinforces said flaps. In addition tothe above functions of providing a cover for the vessel and a support tohold the top flaps up in a level position under pressure the said piece K also serves as a former over. which the top flaps are bent. Referring to Fig. 2, the blank K is there shown to have four folding sides K and K, the latter sides folding in a direction the opposite to that in which the sides K are bent, so that the sides or folds K project downwardly over the corners of the reinforced edges b b and f f when the cover is placed in the vessel, and the sides K project up. In this position, which Figs. 6 and 8 well illustrate, the edges K K upon which the sides K K are bent, rest upon and are supported by the reinforced edges 1) b and ff, and the said cover K-is'i'n this manner prevented from entering the pail, but is at" all times supported in this manner, the thicknessof the edges 1) b and ff being such as t make it impossible for the cover K to pass down intothe pail. attached permanently to the pail or detached "therefrom. In either event it is equally convenient for nesting and shipment. It may be united to theinside of the pail by fastening one of the sides K or K to theinner side of wall 0 or flap I. When the former or cover K is in position in the mouth of the pail, as shown Figs. 6 and 8, it is readyto serve as a former for bending-the top flaps. The sidesHH [be foldedor bent inwardly. These folded are first folded inwardly against the upper side of said cover K, breaking on the creaseline between sides'H and J and bringing the latter come ihclosed between flaps I and J, which constitute the top flaps, and thus said flaps 1' vessel together and thatof providing a-simple and efficient means for securing the bail or handle, ,lsaid' bail or handle beinga'tape or cord which readily'engages with the fasteners in a mannerpresently made plain. The
nose or point a of the fastener is bent at a right angle to the body and unites the side folds paper at various points, I as shown'at c, Fig. '1. 'The lower endof the r by penetrating the fasteneris slit to enable the two corners d to cornersembracexandclamp the sides F and vtenervbecomes a G at'their crease-lines,as shown in Figs. 6,
'7, and 8. When'the fastener is thus made fast to the folds, and the nose at is passed- I through the'sides andelenched on the inner side of wall B, as. shown in Fig. 9,'the faseasily attached in the following manner:
" One endthereof is slipped under the ear g in one of the fasteners. The tape or cordis then drawn or carried around the side of the pail" to the fasteneron the other side and isthen or handle.
vents their openin The ears g g project The said cover maybe part J against the inner side of parts K K, The latter parts of the cover then be rigid and permanent secur-' ing medium for the folded sidesof the ves-' sel. The handle or bail L is preferably made of a suitable length'of'tape or cord and is position and prehaving opposite sides, B, each providedwith their upper ends projected through said folds pail.
a'fold b bent back upon the'side whereby'the upper portions of thesaidsidesarereinforced, corner folds folded-outsideof-said sides B, andholding meansfo'r said corner folds engaging said reinforced upper portions of the sides B, substantially as described.
2. In a paper pail or vessel, thecombination of the inwardlyfolded sides F F and B having crease-lines b and f f throughout their. edgegdouble folds f f and b formed by bending the said edges along said creaselines, metal fasteners having their lower ends secured to the outerfoldsjofihe sides, and
and clamped over the edges b f f on theinside of the pail, substantially as speeified.
3.,In a paper pail or vessel,'-the combi'nation with the overlapping side folds, the free edges f and b of the material comprisingsaid folds being bent outwardly throughout the length thereof to provide reinforced edges, slits 8 Sent from the crease-line ofsaid fold to the edge of the material to enable the said outward fold of the free edges, ofa reinforcing-cove'r. resting on said reinforced edges, the said cover constituting a p former j over which-the top portionsof the pailoryess el are bent, and having downwardly and'f'up wardly projected sides, the former side ex tending down over the corners of the rein= forced edges of the pail or vessel, and the lat ter sides extending up and adapted'torein force the top flaps. i 1 4.1m apaper pail or vessel,,'the combina tion with the overlapping sides of saidpailor vessel, of fasteners the upper and lower edges of which secure the folds of said sides, ears projected from said fasteners, and abailor handle passedupw'ardly under said ears and 4 across the closed top flaps of the vessel or 6; In apaper pail orvessel,the-combinw tion with the folded sides "of said pail or ves sel, of fasteners the lower endsofwhioh' em brace the inclined edges of said folds, and
the upper ends of which pene'trate'the oveis lapping portions of said folds and theinner adjacent walls and areclenched against'the inner sides of said walls, arsproiect euewn wardly from said fasteners, and av tape or cord secured to said earsand forming a handle, passed under the ear 9 of the latter fastener. This measures'the' desired length of the bail The end of said tape is next 1 drawnacross the top of the pail and is faste-ned to the ear to which it was first attached Thislast movement of thesaid tape secures. ,the top flaps in a closed and securingv the top flaps of'the pail Olives sel in a closed-position.
