UNTnD STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ROBERT G. HOPKINS, OF SOMERVILLE, MASSACHUSETTS, ASSIGNOR, BY MESNE ASSIGNMENTS, TO THE CARTERS INK COMPANY, OF BOSTON,
MASSACHUSETTS.
lNKSTAND-SHIELD,
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 630,055, dated August 1, 1899. i
` Application iiled June 13, 1895. Serial No. 552,652. (No model.)
To all whom. it may concern:
Be it known that I, ROBERT G. HOPKINS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Somerville, in the county of Middlesex and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Inkstand-Shields, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in explaining its nature.
The invention relates to the herein described improvern ent in shields for inkstands.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a view in Vertical central section thereof. Fig. 2 is a view in vertical central section, representing a slight modification in the construction of the shield, to which reference is hereinafter made. Fig. 3 is a View in plan of the elastic diaphragm, a slitted diaphragm forming a part of the structure; and Fig. 4 is a View in vertical section of a diaphragm the edges of which are thicker than the intermediate section.
Referring to the drawings, A represents a holder for the diaphragm B. It has a conical exterior a, the conical mouth ci extending to the diaphragm. The holder is made in the two parts a2 CL3, between which is held the outer edge of the diaphragm. The part a2 has the reduced section a4, and the part as is in the nature of a cap having a hole through it, the shoulder a5 closing against the rim of the diaphragm and the portion a6 tightly fitting the side of the part A. In Fig. 2 the part as is represented as extended to the top of the section a2 or as entirely surrounding it.
The diaphragm B is made of rubber and has a continuous outer edge b and the cross-slits b', which form annular flaps b2. In use the holder is inserted into the neck of an ink bottle, stand, or well, thus locating over the ink the diaphragm B. To reach the ink, the pen is forced between the tongues of the `diaphragm, and they cling to it during its downward and also during its upward movement and serve to remove from it scale or any other substance or surplus ink. The diaphragm also serves to prevent dust and foreign matter from entering the ink and evaporation, and to a degree it acts as a safety device in case the stand should be upset, because it tends to prevent the quick outflow of the ink under such conditions.
Having thus fully described my invention, I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States- In an inkstand-shield the combination of the part a2, the part as forming a portion of the diaphragm-holder and having a shoulder a5 and a slitted flexible diaphragm B the rim of which is held against the under surface of the part a2 by the said shoulder a5, as and for the purposes described.
ROBERT G. HOPKINS.
