.E. J. DOLAN.. AUETYLENE GAS BURN-BR\ No. 597,057. Patented Jan. 11,1898.
UNITED STATES PATEN'r reres@ EDXVARD J. DOLAN, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA, ASSIGNOR, BY
MESNE ASSIGNMENT& TO THE ACETYLENE HOUSE LIGHTING COM- PANY, OF YVEST VIRGINIA.
AGETYLENE-GAS BURN ER.
SPECIFIGATION fornng part of Letters Patent No. 597,05'7, dated January 1 1, 1898. Application filed March 12, 1897. Serial No. 627,202. (Ne model.)
To mil whom Zt may concern:
Be it known that I, EDWARD J. DOLAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Acetylene- Gas Burners; and I do declare the following to he a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the acconipanyirig drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification. v
This invention relates to certain new and useful inprovenents in gas-burners; and it relates more particularly to that class of burners which are especially designed for use in burning acetylene gas under pressure.
It has been found that in order to produce a uniforni and smokeless fiane it is necessary that a certain amount of oxygen should be supplied to the gas before it reaches the point of conbustion, and in order to produce a flat, uniform, and smokeless fiame it has heretofore been proposed to use a duplex burner in which the points of the burners have been inclined toward each other, so that the gas expelled from the burners under pressure will unite to form a flat fiame.
The object of the present invention is to provide a burner suitable for use in burning acetylene gas under pressure, the Construction of the burner being such as to dispense with the necessity of employng duplex burners and to provide a burner in which a fiat uniform smokeless blaze is produced and in which provision is had whereby oxygen is supplied to the gas at a point within the burner intermediate of the point at which the gas is forced through a small flat opening and a corresponding outer slot or opening, at which latter point the blaze is seated. i
To these ends and to such others as the invention may pertain the same consists in the novel construction of burner and in the peculiar arrangement, eombination, and adaptation of parts, all as more fully hereinafter described, shown in the accompanying draw* ings, and then specifically defined in the appended claim.
The invention is clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawings, which, with the letters of reference marked thereon, form a part of this specification, like letters of reference indicating the same parts throughout the several Views, and in which drawiugs- Figure l is a central Vertical section through a burner constructed in accordance with my invention, the section being taken at right angles to the slots through which the gas passes. Fig. 2 is a central vertical section taken through the slot-s. Fig. 3 is a top plan View of the burner. Fig. 4 is a central vertical section taken through a modified form of the burner, and Fig. 5 is a top plan View of the buruer shown in Fig. 4:.
Reference now being had to the details of the drawin gs by letter, A designates a burner, or, as it is connonly known, a burner-tipfi It is preferably made of lava or other material of a like nature and is preferably in a single piece, as shown, consisting, essentially, of a body portion at the upper end of which is provided an enlarged circular or domeshaped portion A which portion A is provided with a Vertical transverse slot cc, which slot opens into a ohamber B. G is a gas-pas sage which extends longitudinally through the body and neck portions of the device and at its upper end is provided with an oval or enlarged crown or tip 0 which conforms in shape to the form of the enlarged outer portion A of the burner and is provided with an exceedingly narrow slot c, which slot c is in direct alinem ent with the larger outer slot a. The portion A of the burner is provided with a series of small openings h, through which air is adrnitted to the ohanbcr B, as shown.
The operation of the burner will from the foregoing description be readily understood. It will be seen that the gas in passing through the narrow slot c will be formed into a fiat column or sheet, and the said column or sheet being forced through the outer widened slot or aperture a the blaze will be seated at the point at which the gas escapes through the outer slot a. Air, which enters through the shown one of these nodifications, the burner illustrated in said figures consisting of two separate parts, the inner tube being in this instance inserted within a hollow opening provided for its recepiion in the body portion of the burner.
Having thus described my invcntion, Whtt I claim to be new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
In a gas-bu'ner of the character described, an inner slot or gas-passage, in direct zilineinent with a slot or gas-passage of greater width at the-extreme point of the burner, a chamber within thebnrner intermediate of the Slots and iaieral air-passages communicating With the said chanber at or above the horizontal plane-of the inner siot, substantially as described and for the purpose speci- In testimony Whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
