H. W.- SMITH. COMBINATION TOOL.
No 515,799. Patented Mar. 6, 18'94.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
HENRY SMITH, OF ALLIANCEOHIO, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO FRANK J. RUTH, OF SAME PLACE.
COMBlNATlON-TOOL.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 515,799, dated March 6, 1894:. Application filed May 29, 1893. serial No. $75,873, (N model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, HENRY W. SMITH, a citizen of the United States, residing at Alliance,
' ple, cheap, and efiective implement for shearing and crimping sheet-metal; consisting of a two-part tool integral with which parts are formed a pair of snips or shears for cutting purposes; and also a pair of dies for stamping or crimpingpurposes, said shears and dies being designed, arranged, and adapted to be used separately, or at one and the same time as will hereinafter appear.
In the accompanying drawings which form part of this specification, and in which like letletters indicate like parts wherever employed, Figure 1, represents a side elevation of my invention; Fig. 2, a top plan view thereof; and Figs. '3 and 4 fragmentary sections illustrating face views of the crimping dies.
The invention will now be more fully described and particularly pointed out in the following claims.
Reference being bad to the accompanying drawings and letters thereon A indicates one handle of the implement, and B the other, said handles being pivoted together as at O, and terminating in blades D E forming snips or shears as shown by Fig. 1.
Back of the pivotal point C, or on the opposite side from that occupied by the shears D E, are located bosses F. and G formed integral with the handles 'A, B, respectively and projecting therefrom at an angle. Theinner face of boss F is traversed by longitudinal ridges ad, which continue transversely across the handle A; while the boss G and its adjacent handle B are crossed in the same mannor by V shaped depressions b, 6, corresponding with ridges a, a, which they are adapted to receive, these parts coacting to form the two members ofa crimping die. This being the construction of my invention in its preferred form, its use and operation are too apparent to require much explanation, it being desirable however, to add: The implement as shown is intended particularly for the use of tinsmiths in the various operations, which they are called upon to perform, of cutting and crimping sheet-metal; and in such use is adapted to out without crimping, to crimp without cutting, or to cut and crimp simul- 6o taneously by one and the same operation of the handles A, B. In the latter important use it will be seen by inspection of Fig. 1, that either the strip or the bodyof the sheet being operated upon by blades D E, passes immediately between the two members of the crimping die, and is by them formed into a configuration corresponding with their meeting faces, and this without a separate operation or handling of the metal. It is obvious also, that dies of various configurations to meet difierent requirements of the trade may be employed; or interchangeable dies may conveniently be attached to bosses F, G, for the same purpose; and likewise the crimping 7 and cutting devices may be located on the same side of their common fulcrum C, or on opposite sides from that shown if desired, without in the least departing from the spirit of my invention, which,
Having been thus described, what I claim is 1. A pair of pivoted levers having to one side of their pivotal point shear blades, and to the opposite side a crimping die, the lat- 85 ter crossing said levers transversely and extending to one side thereof, substantially as described.
2. In a cutting and crimping tool, the combination with cutting blades and their pivoted c handles, of a pair of dies arranged at an angle to and onset from the plane of the shear blades, substantially as described.
3. In a cutting and crimping tool, the combination with the cutting blades and their piv- 9 5 oted handles, of bosses arranged at an angle to and offset from the plane of the shear blades, and crimping dies formed on the meeting faces of said bosses, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I subscribe my signarco ture in presence of two witnesses.
HENRY W. SMITH.
Witnesses:
