Z. R. KEA. PLOW.
No. 487.749. Patented'Deo. 13, 1892.
STATES PATENT Orme.
ZAOHARIAH R. KEA, OF SHONGALOO, LOUISIANA.
PLOW.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 487,749, dated December 13, 1892. Application filed January 29, 1892. Serial No. 419,672. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ZAOHARIAH R. KEA, a citizen of the United States, residing at Shongaloo, in the parish of Vebster and State of Louisiana, have invented a new and useful Plow, of which the followingis a specification.
This invention relates to plows; and it has for its object to provide a plow adapted for use or attachment upon the foot of any suitable plow-stock and provide one which will be light and easily handled, having means for the ready attachment of eithera straight landside or half-sweep to the mold-board and share of the plow on the bar side thereof, by the combination of which the plow bars off and molds up the earth at the same time.
With these and many other objects in View, which will suggest themselves to those skilled in the art, the same consists in the novel construction, combination, and arrangement of parts hereinafter more fully described, illustrated, and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a perspective view of a plow constructed in accordance with my invention, illustrated as secured to the lower end of an ordinary stock. Fig. 2 is a vertical longitudinal section of the same. Fig. 3 is a side elevation. Fig. 4 is a detail in perspective of the half-sweep attachment. Fig. 5 is a similar View of the straight landside. A
Referringto the accompanying drawings, A represents a sweep or half-shovel terminating in an integral share or point B,forminga contin uation of the curvature of the sweep, which, while serving the function of the shovel-plow, serves in the capacity of a single mold-board to turn the earth over to the right while cultivating between the rows, and said share or point may also be detachably secured to the extreme front end of said shovel-sweep. The inner edge of said sweep or share is provided with the under bar C, extending beneath the sweep a short distance to the rear and terminating in an angular joining-edge c. To the inner or bar side of the sweep is adapted to be detachably secured thereto the half-sweep landside D. Said half-sweep is provided with a securing-plate E, curved to a shape to conform to the front portion of the shovelsweep, and is adapted to snugly iit under the same and be secured thereto by means of the securing-bolts F. The said half-sweep is curved gently outward from its upper to its lower edge and also extends rearwardly at an angle to the bar side of the main sweep at an angle greatly less than the same, and, while serving to bar up the earth, also gently turns or twists the same over and slightly hills the same. The lower edge of said half-sweep D also inclines downwardly from its connection with the shovel toalower plane than the point, as illustrated, so as to secure a purchase for the entire plow and in order that the half-sweep D will eftectually turn and twist the earth, as described. At the lower meeting-point of the lower edge of the bearing-plate E and the forward loweredge of the rearwardly andslightlydownwardly inclined sweep is formed atriaugular or V shaped notch G, fitting over the angle joining-edge c of the sweep, allowing the extreme lower edge of the plate E to underlap the bar C, while the eXtreme front edge of the half-sweep D, forming said triangular notch, overlaps and joins the outer face of the bar C and forms a continuation thereof. It can be readily seen that by the disposition of said half-sweep the same, while steadyin g the main body of the plow, also grasps the earth and gently twists or hills the same. Interchangeably used with said half-sweep, if so desired, is the straight landside I-I, having a curved securing-plate I and triangular joining-notch .I by means of which the said landside attachment may be also detachably secured to the sweep, and thus allow the same to serve its usual function as aturning-plow, said straight landside being further provided with a lower traveling flange K, which allows the same to travel smoothly into and over the earth.
The construction and operation of my improved plow is now thought to be apparent without further description.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, isp In a plow, the combination, with the shovelsweep having a straight rearwardly-extendin g bar under the front edge of the same and terminating in an inner angular joining-edge, of a detachable landside or half-sweep havinga curved securing-plate conforming to the front inner curvature of the sweep and detachably IOO secured thereto and provided with a V-shaped notch at the lower edge of the same, engaging the inner edge of said bar, thus joining the landside to the sweep Hush with the bar side 0f the same and formingaoontinuation thereof, said landside-sweep being curved gently outward from its upper to its lower edge, extended rearwardly from the bar side of the main sweep at an angle greatly less than the 1 o angle thereof, and'having its'lower edge curved slightly downward and rearward at an angle from its meeting edge with the bar side of the sweep, substantially as set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto aiixed my signature in I5 the presence of two Witnesses.
ZACHARIAH R. KEA. IVitnesses:
JOHN W. KEA, THOMAS D. KEA.
