Description
J.. T. PALMER.
` VChurn. No. 44,216. Patented Sept. 13, 1864.
Witnesses.' Invento7':
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JACOB T. PALMER, OF GREENCASTLE, INDIANA.
CHURN.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 4 1,216, dated September i3, 1864.
To all whom t may concern/.-
Beit known that 1, JACOB T. PALMER, ot' Greencastle, in the county of Putnam and State of Indiana, have invented a new and Improved Ohurn and l do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making a part of this specification, in which- Figure l is a longitudinalvertical section of my invention, taken iu the line x, Fig. 2; Fig. 2, a transverse vertical section ofthe same, taken in the line y y, Fig. 1.
Similar letters of reference indicate like parts.
This invention consists in the employment or use of an oscillating dasher in connection ith a central abutment placed within a cream-box, and all arranged as hereinafter set forth, whereby all the butter contained in the cream is produced expeditiously and with but a moderate expenditure of labor.
A represents a cream-box, which may be of rectangular form and is provided at the center ofthe inner surfaces of its two sides with upright cleats B B, each of which is provided with an oblong vertical slot, a, the lower ends of which form the bearings for the journals b b ofthe dasher O, the latter being of rectangular form and having perforationso made in j it. The dasher C is nearly equal in length and width to the box A, and the journals b are at the centers of its sides, the former being secured in position by keys d and wedges e, as shown in Fig. 2.
Within the box A, and directly underneath the center of the dasher O, there is a vertical abutment which is perforated with holes f, and to the center of the dasher there is attached an upright bar or lever, E, which extends up through an oblong slot, g, in the top or lid ofthe box A, and has a cap or plate, h, fitted upon it, which covers the slot y. The slot g admits of the bar or leverE being oscillated to give a vibrating or oscillating movement to the da-sher, while the cap or plate IL serves to prevent the cream escaping out though the slot g when the dasher is in operation.
From the above description it will be seen that as the dasher is oscillated the cream will be forced up and down through the perforations of the dasher, as well as through the perforations of the abutment, and the butter produced in a short period of time and with but little labor.
The box, dasher, and abutment may all be constructed of wood, although metal may be used, if desired.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The perforated oscillating dasher C, operated by the lever E, in combination with the perforated abutment D, arranged within the cream-box A, substantially as and forthe pur pose herein set forth.
JACOB T. PALMER. Vitnesses:
CONRAD 000K, R. S. WARD.
