The cover is secured to the box by a pin and socket joint which pennits the cover to overlie the box with its exterior face exposed outwardly for shipment and storage and to rotate into a display position with its interior face exposed outwardly to provide a display surface for jewelry.
PATENTEUUBI 19 I97| FBGA INVENTOR F W 4 52 40444 ATTORNEYS JEWELRY BOX The present invention relates generally to packaging and more specifically to a combined storage box and display stand for jewelry.
In the retail sale of jewelry products, it is important to employ packaging that will provide a secure and safe container for shipment and storage and which may be conveniently converted to provide an attractive display for use by the retail merchant. Additionally, in the sale of men's jewelry items such as cuff links, applicant has found it to be commercially desirable to provide a permanent jewelry box for use by the customer simultaneously with the sale of jewelry products.
It is thus a principal object of the present invention to provide an attractive, inexpensive jewelry case which may be used for safe shipment and storage of jewelry products prior to sale, as a stand for display of such products for sale, and, thereafter, by the purchaser as a permanent jewelry box.
In accordance with the present invention, a jewelry box is constructed with a lower box section having upstanding sidewalls and an open top and a cover having a protective exterior face and a decorative interior face. The cover is secured to the lower box section by a pin and socket joint which permits the cover to pivot between a closed position overlying the top of the box and an open position away from the top of the box, and, in the open position, to rotate about an axis through the pin so that the cover may be closed over the lower box section with its exterior face exposed outwardly for shipment and storage and with its interior face exposed outwardly to provide a display surface for jewelry.
Further objects, features and advantages of the present invention will be more fully appreciated by reference to the following detailed description of a presently preferred but nonetheless illustrative embodiment in accordance with the present invention, reference being made to the attached drawings, wherein:
FIG. 1 is a perspective view of a jewelry box constructed in accordance with the present invention with the cover closed in the shipment and storage position;
FIG. 2 is a perspective view partially broken away of the jewelry box with a pair of cuff links attached, the cover being shown in normal open position and, in broken line, in rotated position;
FIG. 3 is similar to FIG. 1 with the cover in the closed display position;
FIG. 4 is a sectional view taken along line 4-4 in FIG. 2 looking in the direction of the arrows;
FIG. 5 is a view taken along line 5-5 in FIG. 4 looking in the direction of the arrows; and
FIG. 6 is a sectional view of the pin and socket joint with the joint in pivoted position being shown in broken lines.
Referring specifically to the drawing, the jewelry box generally designated 10 comprises a lower box section 12 having a closed bottom wall 14, upstanding sidewalls 16 and an open top. The lower box section includes an insert 18 which fits within the interior of the box and provides an attractive and contoured interior lining. Insert 18 has upstanding sidewalls which fold over outwardly away from the box center but within sidewalls 16 to create an interior ledge 180 about the open top of the box lower section. The walls 16 of the box lower section may comprise a layer of wood or other durable material 16a covered by vinyl or similar dirt-repellant material 16b.
The box cover 20 is dimensioned to overlay the open top of lower box section 12, interior of sidewalls 16, with the edges of cover 20 being seated upon ledge 18a. Cover 20 includes a protective exterior face 20a which may be covered with vinyl or other dirt-repellant material similar to 16b, and a decorative interior face 20b including a felt cushion 22 which depends within insert 18 when the edge of closure 20 is seated on ledge 18a. Cushion 22 provides an attractive display surface for jewelry products and includes a pair of elastic straps 24 to retain cuff links 21 or similar products in place on the display surface as shown in FIGS. 2 and 3. Cover 20 also includes a lift tab 32 for ease of opening.
The pin and socket plate members are preferably assembled prior to attachment to the cover and box respectively. For convenience of manufacture, the pin may comprise a hollow cylindrical shank spread at its exterior end to form the head. Pin 26 may be secured to cover 20 by means of an attachment plate 29 fastened over the edge of cover 20.
With this construction, closure 20 is adapted to overlie the open top of lower box section 12 with its exterior face 22a facing outwardly and seated on ledge 18a for shipment and storage. The thickness of closure 20 is approximately equal to the distance between ledge 18a and the upper edge of walls 16 so that the top of cover 20 is substantially flush with the upper edge of walls 16 when the cover is seated on ledge 18a. In this configuration, the box provides a secure container for shipment and storage of jewelry products and keeps such jewelry products relatively dust free.
The pin and socket joint pennits the cover to pivot between the closed position overlaying the lower box section as seen in FIG. 1 and an open position away from the lower box section as seen in FIG. 2 permitting access to the interior of the box. When in the open position, the pin and socket joint permits cover 20 to rotate about an axis through pin 26 as shown by arrow B.
For use as a display stand, closure 20 is rotated through an angle of substantially about the axis through pin 26 and pivoted downwardly to overlie lower box section 12 with interior face 20b exposed outwardly as seen in FIG. 3. In this position the exterior surface of closure 20 is seated on ledge 18a and the box provides an attractive display stand for jewelry products as seen in FIG. 3.
After sale, the box 10 may be used as a permanent jewelry box for cuff links and other items of men's jewelry as the purchaser desires.
It is to be understood that the above-described embodiments are merely examples of the application of the principles of the present invention. Numerous other embodiments will be devised by those skilled in the art without departing from the spirit or scope of the present invention.
