SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 368,893, dated August '23, 1887.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, LOUIS L6WENTHAL, of the city of Dresden, in the Kingdom of Saxony and German Empire, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Ohin- Holders for Violins and Similar Instruments, (for which I have obtained an English patent dated the 19th of J one, 1884, No. 9,183,) of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to improvements in chin-holders for violins and other similar in- Struments.

The chin-holders for violins and other similar instruments heretofore employed fulfill their purpose imperfectly and do not offer the chin an absolute certain support. In order to remedy this defect,the wooden plate,board,or frame for supporting the chin is provided with an oval or otherwise formed opening, A, between the parts a and b, or about concentric to the periphery of the chin holder. The edges of the opening, and also the periphery, are beveled off, as shown in Figure 2 of the accompanying drawings, so that all sharp corners are avoided, and as the chin of the player can freely enter the said opening all lateral movement of the chin is prevented, which opening is, as aforementioned, situated in the center of the device or chin-holder, as represented in Fig. 1, and shown in section, Fig.2.

The chin-holder is made in irregular oval form and cut out in the center, so that only the frame-like part a remains, which is on the under side hollowed out or recessed at b, in order to render the device as light as possible. To the underside of this said chin-holder I Fig. 2 is a section affix a clamp for holding the violin, which said clamp c consists of two tubular parts, and is attached to the rear part of the wooden framelike parta of the chin-holder. A suitable bolt, d, which is for the whole or a part of its length provided with screw threads, is screwed through the lower tubular half of the clamp into the upper tubular half of the said clamping device, and serves to regulate the size of the same,according to the size of the violin or other instrument. The said screw-bolt can be either slotted at the inferior end to receive a screw-driver when adjustment is required, or the head can be suitably milled, so that it can be operated without a screw driver. The lower or upper half of the said tubular parts is provided with a suitable muff or sleeve, 6, so as to entirely cover the joint between the two parts. The inferior surface of the said chin-rest can, if desired, be provided near the clamping device with a lining or part lining of cork or other suitable material.

Having now particularly described the na ture of my said invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

1. A chin-rest for violins and other similar musical instruments, consisting of a telescopic clamp adapted to be attached to the instrument, and a plate or frame attached to said clamp, and having a rounded top edge and a central open space to receive the chin, substantially as set forth.

2. In a chin-rest for violins and like instruments, the combination of the frame a, hollowed out at I), with the clamping device 0 d, substantially as described and shown.

3. In a chin-rest for violins and like instruments, the combination of the tubular clamping device 0, regulating-screw d, and the muff witnesses.
