Freeman, Mansfield, Tex., assignor to Container Corporation of America, Chicago, 11]., a corporation of Delaware Filed Aug. 11, 1967, Ser. No. 660,110 Int. Cl. B65d /50, 5/36; A47g 23/02 US. Cl. 206-45.14 2 Claims ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE This invention relates to a collapsible display carton for holding an article in an upright position.
The invention comprehends an improvement on a carton of the type disclosed in United States Letters Patent No. 3,157,275, which carton is not collapsible after it has been erected and glued.
It is, of course, always desirable and economically advantageous for a packer to receive a carton in collapsed and completely glued condition, so that the carton can be erected and filled without having to be glued.
It is therefore an object of this invention to provide, in a carton of the type described, a construction which will permit a carton having a portion with a triangular configuration to be completely glued and thereafter collapsed for shipping to the packer or user.
A more specific object of the invention is the provision, in a carton of the type described, of a bottom wall construction including a pair of inner and outer panels one of which is partially secured to the other and divided into separate sections which can be reverse folded in backto-back relation to permit the glued carton to be collapsed.
These and other objects of the invention will be apparent from an examination of the following description and drawings, wherein:
FIGURE 1 is a perspective view of a display carton embodying features of the invention;
FIGURE 2 is a transverse vertical section taken on line 22 of FIGURE 1;
FIGURE 3 is a plan view of the blank from which the carton illustrated in FIGURE 1 may be formed; and
FIGURE 4 is an end elevation of the carton shown in collapsed condition.
-It will be understood that, for purposes of clarity, certain elements have been intentionally omitted from certain views where they are believed to be illustrated to better advantage in other views.
Turning now to the drawing for a better understanding of the invention, and particularly to FIGURE 1, it will be seen that the display carton, indicated generally at C, which is adapted to hold one or more articles. indicated generally at A, may be formed from a unitary blank B of foldable paperboard, as shown in FIGURE 3 of the drawing.
The display carton, which is adapted to stand in an upright position when filled with one or more packaged articles, includes a primary or main vertical wall having formed integrally at the lower portion thereof a generally rectangular retaining section or base 12.
a front panel 16, of lesser height than the rear panel, which is hingedly attached at its upper edge to the upper edge of the rear panel ;16 along a horizontal hinge line 18 and which is folded over in face-to-face relation with the front surface of rear panel 14.
The retaining section or base 12 includes an inclined panel 20, hingedly attached at its upper edge along hinge line 22 to the lower edge of front panel 16, and a bottom wall 24 which extends between the lower edges of the rear wall and the inclined panel.
It will be noted that bottom wall outer panel first section 32 is free from attachment to the overlying inner panel 26; whereas, bottom wall outer panel second section 36 is adhesively secured to the overlying bottom wall inner panel 26 along a longitudinally extending glue strip 44. The purpose of this arrangement, which is an essential feature of the invention is to permit the first and second sections 32 and 36, respectively, of the bottom wall outer panel to be reverse folded in back-to-back relation, as shown in FIGURE 4, to permit the carton to be collapsed for shipping after it has been glued in the previously described manner.
As best seen in FIGURE 3, rear panel 14, front panel \16, and inclined panel 20, are provided with related openings 50, 52, and 54, respectively, which cooperate, when the carton is in erected condition as shown in FIGURES 1 and 2, to provide a means for receiving the packaged articles.
As best seen in FIGlUR'ES 2 and 3 bottom wall inner panel 26 may be provided with one or more integral extensions or projections 60 which project rearwardly through and beyond the openings 50 and the rear panel to increase the effective area of the carton bottom wall on which the article is placed. Thus, it will be understood that when the carton is erected and the article is placed in position within the openings in the rear, front, and inclined panels the carton will be entirely self-supporting.
If desired rear and front panels 14 and 16 may be provided with aligned holes 70 which may be used to suspend the package or carton from a hook on a display rack.
Also, in order to help position and retain the packaged or displayed article within the openings of the rear, front, and inclined panels, rear and front panels 14 and 16 may be provided with integral hinged tabs which engage the article.
I claim:
1. A collapsible carton for holding and displaying an article, comprising:
(a) a vertical display wall including:
(i) a rear panel extending the entire height of the carton and having a pair of openings adjacent the lower edge thereof;
(ii) a front panel, of lesser height than said rear panel, hinged at its upper edge to the upper edge of said rear panel and disposed against the front of said rear panel;
3,437,193 I 3 4 (b) an inclined panel hinged at its upper edge to the said panels having openings adjacent the lower porlower edge of said front panel and extending downtions thereof; wardly and forwardly therefrom; (c) a bottom wall including:
'(c) a bottom wall including:
-(i) an inner panel hinged to and extending rear- (i) an inner panel hinged to the lower edge of said first panel and extending toward the lower edge wardly from the lower edge of said inclined 5 of said second panel, said inner panel having panel toward the lower edge of said rear panel integral projections for cooperating and extendand having a pair of projections adapted to c0- ing through said openings in said rear panel for operate with and extend through said openings increasing the rigidity of the carton; in said rear panel to increase the rigidity of said (ii) an outer panel underlying said inner panel and carton; having a first section hinged to the lower edge '(ii) an outer panel underlying said inner panel of said second panel and being free from attachand having a rear section hinged to the lower ment to said inner panel and having a second edge of said rear panel and being free from atsection hinged to said first section and being tachrnent to said inner panel and having a forattached to said inner panel, wherein the carton ward section hinged at its rear edge to the can be collapsed by fol-ding said outer panel forward edge of said rear section and being sections in back-to-back relation, and wherein attached to said inner panel, wherein the carton contact between the bottom of the article and can be collapsed by reverse folding Said Outer the upper surface of the bottom wall inner panel P Sections in back'to'back relation, and serves to maintain the carton in erected condiwherein contact between the bottom of the article and the upper surface of the bottom wall inner panel serves to maintain the carton in erected condition.
