Description

Nov. 5, 1963 c. w. WOLF 3,109,236
HAIR TRIMMING ATTACHMENT FOR ELECTRIC RAZORS Filed April 9, 1962 INVENTOR.
CyriLW.WoLf
56 4. ({aeq diiorng/ United States Patent 3,109,236 HAIR TREMMING ATTACI-HVIENT FOR ELECTRIC RAZORS Cyril W. Wolf, 1604 SW. th St, Fort Lauderdale, Fla. Filed Apr. 9, 1962, Ser. No. 186,026 1 Claim. (Cl. 30-90) This invention relates to a hair-trimming device for electric razors, and more particularly to an attachment which can be speedily yet removably, attached to an electric razor of the conventional type to enable the razor to be used to trim the hair, moustache or beard neatly and effectively.
While electric razors as normally used for shaving are very effective for close shaving, an effort to use the same for cutting long hairs or trimming will necessarily result in irregularity and unevenness of trim with spotty and unsatisfactory results.
For proper trimming of the hair, and particularly along the sides of the head or in the so-called sideburns; for trimming the hair at the back of the head and neck; for moustache or heard trimming, the use of a comb in conjunction with a cutting implement, somewhat in the manner in which a barber employs and manipulates a comb and shears when cutting hair, is desirable.
It is therefore one of the objects of the present invention to provide a comb razor attachment which will enable successful, uniform trimming of the hair to be obtained by the use of an electric razor.
It is an object of the invention to provide an attachment of this kind which can be quickly and easily applied to an electric razor without requiring the use of tools or necessitating any changes, alterations or removal of parts from a conventional electric razor.
More particularly, the invention contemplates the provision of a cup-shaped guard member adapted to be fitted over the cutting head of the razor, which guard member has a top wall in the form of a comb or a number of combs that are spaced above and free from contact with the cutting edges of the head, the comb or combs being effective, when moved through the hair, to guide the hairs into the guard and reach the cutting elements to be severed thereby.
With these and other objects to be hereinafter set forth in view, I have devised the arrangement of parts to be described and more particularly pointed out in the claim appended hereto.
In the accompanying drawing, wherein an illustrative embodiment of the invention is disclosed,
FIG. 1 is an elevational view of an electric razor of known construction provided with the improved hair trimming attachment;
FIG. 2 is an enlarged top plan view of the attachment;
FIG. 3 is a sectional view, taken on the line 3-3 of FIG. 1, looking in the direction of the arrows;
FIG. 4 is a front elevational view of the attachment;
FIG. 5 is a sectional view, taken substantially on the line 5-5 of FIG. 2, looking in the direction of the arrows; and
FIG. 6 is a top plan view of another embodiment of the invention.
Referring to the drawing, 1 indicates the casing of a well known type of electric razor, it being understood 3,1692% Faten ted Nov. 5, 1963 "ice that the invention is not only applicable to this type, but to any of the other known forms and possibly to others which may be produced in the future.
The razor shown is provided with a number of cutting heads 2, and fitted removably over the top end of the casing 1 and over the cutting heads 2, is a cup-shaped head or guard 3. The same may be composed of plastic, metal, or any other suitable material and it is retained in position on the end of the razor, as shown in FIG. 3, by frictional fit or by the use of interfitting elements which provide for a snap connection between the parts to thereby hold the cup-shaped guard in place, yet permitting its instant removal.
The cup or guard, in the form shown, is preferably of ovate formation for the particular razor shown, but it may be of other shape complementary to the shapes of other razors. It includes a circumferential side wall 4 and a top wall 5, the latter wall being in the form of a toothed comb 6.
At the forward or free ends 7 of the teeth 8 of the comb, spacing 9 is provided for the entry of hairs during the trimming operation, which spacing appears between the lowered upper edge 10 of the front wall 11 of the cup or guard and the teeth 8, as clearly seen in FIGS. 3 and 4.
When the cup or guard is seated home upon the upper or forward end of the razor, as shown in FIGS. 1 and 3, the teeth 8 of the comb are elevated above the cutters 2 for a short distance of for example of the order of oneeighth of an inch or so, and are free from contact with the cutters. As will be noted in FIG. 5, the ends or tips 7 of the teeth 8 are located rearwardly of the farthest extension to the left of the cutters 2 so that the spacing 9, in co-operation with this rearward location of the extremities of the teeth permits a substantial part of at least one of the cutters to be easily accessible to the hair. When the razor equipped with the attachment is moved over the hair, the hair is easily introduced between the teeth of the comb to reach the cutters to be easily and smoothly trimmed. A razor thus equipped will permit the trimming of the hair in the manner in which a barber employs a comb and scissors and since the comb is interposed between the head and the cutters of the razor, a close shaving effect, as secured by an electric razor when normally used for shaving, is avoided and a hair trim rather than a shave will be secured. It will, of course, be understood that when the razor is to be used for shaving, the combed guard or cup will be removed and a conventional shaving guard substituted for it.
In the embodiment of the invention shown in FIGS. 1 to 5 inclusive, the teeth of the comb extend completely across the top of the guard and form the upper Wall thereof. In the embodiment shown in FIG. 6, two combs indicated respectively at 12 and 13 are disclosed, the same being separated by the longitudinal, central bar v14.
The use of the attachment merely requires the lifting off of the regular guard and the placement of the described attachment.
Having thus described a single embodiment of the invention, it is obvious that the same is not to be restricted thereto, but is broad enough to cover all structures coming within the scope of the annexed claim.
What I claim is:
A hair trimming attachment for electric razors comprising, a cup shaped member adapted to fit on the top of an electric razor, said cup-shaped member having a rear wall provided with a forwardly-projecting top and said top provided with teeth to form a toothed comb, said cupshaped member being provided with a forward wall having its upper edge located at a distance below the comb Whereby spacing is provided between the comb and said upper edge, the cup shaped member when fitted over the top of the cutters of the electric razor being located in a position above and spaced away from the tops of the cutters so that spacing is thereby provided between the comb and the cutters, the comb having free extremities of its teeth located rearwardly of the upper edge of the forward wall, the spacing between the comb and said forward wall being such as to expose the forward edge and a part of the top of one of the cutters of the razor.
