G. R. ARNOLD.
DOUBLE PEN HOLDER.
' No. 310,168. PafientedJan. 6,1885.
WITNESSES: V I nm'u'rom [vow/3 AmnmS UNITED STATES.
PATENT OFF CE.
CLARENCE R. ARNOLD, OF WELLSVILLE, OHIO.
DOUBLE PEN-HOLDER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 310,168, dated January 6, 1885.
Application filed May 13, 1884. (No model.)
To all whom, it may concern Be it known that I, CLARENCE B. ARNOLD, of \Vellsville, in the county of Columbiana and State of Ohio, have invented a new and Improved Double Pen-Holder, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The object of my invention is to provide a new and improved pen-holder adapted to hold two pens in such a manner that the nibs of the pens can be adjusted to be any desired distance apart and can readily be separated more or less while Writing.
The invention consists in the construction and arrangements of parts, as will be hereinafter fully described and claimed.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure l is aface view of my improved penholder. Fig. 2 is a cross-sectional elevation of the same on the line 00 as, Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a face view of a modified construction.
The handle A of the pen-holder is held in one end of a barrel, B, adapted to receive and hold a pen, C. The barrel Bis provided with a laterallyprojecting plate or wing, D, on which a wing or plate, E, is pivoted, which projects from another pen-holding barrel, F, thus adapting the barrel F to swing toward or from the barrel B. A spring, G, is held on the wing or plate E, and the ends rest against the barrels B and F, thus pressing the rear ends of the barrels from each other, and the front or outer, ends toward each other, and whereby the nib of the pen Hheld in thebarrel F is pressed toward the nib of the pen C. An upwardly projecting lug, J, is formed on the wing or plate E, and through the same a screw, K, is passed, the point of which screw rests against an upwardly-projecting lug, L, at the front end of theplate or wing D. A curved handle-piece, M, is
formed on the inner or rear end of the barrel F, and an upwardly-projecting plate, N, is formed on the plate D at the side of the barrel B.
Instead of pivoting the wings or plates D and E to each other, as shown in Fig. 1, they can, be arranged to slide on each other, as
shown in Fig. 3, and the pen-holding barrels can thus also be adjusted to slide toward or from each other. By turning the screw K so that it projects a greater or less distance from the lug J, the nibs of the pens C H are separated a greater or less distance and both pens draw parallel lines. If the space between the lines is to be changed while writing, the handle-piece M is pressed toward the plate N more or less, the first finger resting against the said plate N. As soon as the handle-piece M is released the spring G throws the rear ends of the barrels B and F from each other and thus presses the nibs or points of the pens toward each other until the screw K rests against the stop or lug L on the plate or wing D.
Different-colored inks can be used on the pens, and. a coarse and a fine pen can be used together, and by changing the pens and ink various effects can be produced.
Instead of arranging the spring G in the manner shown, it can be arranged in such a manner that one end rests against the inner surface of the upward1y-projecting plate N, and the other end rests against the lug J and presses it toward the lug L.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. A pen-holder provided with two pen holding devices adapted to be adjusted a great er or less distance from each other, and of a spring for pressing the nibs of the pens toward each other, substantially as herein shown and described.
2. A pen-holder provided with a fixed barrel, a movable barrel, a spring for pressing the nibs of the pens toward each other, and a stop-screw, substantially as herein shown and described.
3. In a pen-holder, the combination, with the barrel B, provided with a wing, D, having a lug, L, of the barrel F, provided with a wing, E, pivoted on the wing D and having a lug, G, in which a set-screw, K, is held, substantially as herein shown and described.
