Description

(No Model.) 1 I 4 G. FL LAWRENOE8ZI MCDONALD.
OIL EJEGTOR.
N 295,562. Patented M325, 1884.
Mo Maw.
To all whom it may concern:
UNrrED dramas FA'rENr Erica.
OIL-EJECTOR.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No.295,5 62, dated March 25, 1884.
Application filed January 7,1884. (No model.) i
Be it known that we, G ORGE F. LAwRENcE and ALEXANDER MoDoNALn, both citizens of the United States. both residing at Worcester,
in the county of Worcester and State of Mas:
sachusetts, have jointly invented certain new and useful Improvements in Oil-Ejectors; and
, we do hereby declare that the same are fully bricating shaftings or other parts ofmachinery that are located overhead or in such inconvenient places as to be inaccessible with an ordinary oil-can, without the use of a ladder or other means for reaching the desired spot to be lubricated.
Our invention is carried out as follows, reference being had to the accompanying draw- "ings, where- Figure 1 represents a side elevation, and Fig. 2 represents a front elevation, of our'improved oil-ej eotor. Fig. 3 represents a central longitudinal section. Fig. 4 represents a cross-section on the line A B, shown in Figs. 1 and 3; and Fig. 5 represents a cross-section on the line C D, shown in Figs. 1 and 3.
Similar letters refer to similar parts wherever they occur on the different parts of the drawings.
The invention consists of the oil-reservoir a, preferably made of metal, and of cylindrical form, as shown in the drawings. The reservoir a is closed at its lower end by means of bottom piece, a, in a suitable manner, and is also closed in its upperend by means of the cover or top piece, a, as shown in Fig. 3. A perforation is made throu h the cover a" into which is screwed the cap a that is removedwhen the reservoir on is being filled with the. lubricant,
and screwed down onto the cover a, as shown in Fig. 3, after the reservoir is charged.
. Within the reservoir a is located the valvewith the reservoir a by means of a side openpipe I), the lower end of which communicates ing, 72, as shownin Fig. 3. Within the lower end of the pipe 6 is located the valve-seat 0,
having a central perforation adapted to be closed by the inlet-valve c. A little higher up within the pipe 6 is located a similar valve-seat,
end of delivery-pipe e.
, closed by the deliverywalve d, as shown in Fig.
3. The upper end of thevalve-pipe b projects through the cover a, and is soldered to the latter where it passes through it, so as to make a perfectly-tight joint at this place. upper end of said pipe I) is screw-threaded, and provided with a screw-threaded cap or stuffing-box, b, as shown in the drawings. Within the pipe I) is located the extension delivery-pipe 6, provided in its lower end with a suitable annular packing, e, as shown in Fig. 3, so as to effect a tight joint between the inside of the pipe I) and the exterior of the lower The pipe 6 extends up through the cap or stuffing-box b, where a tight connection between the said pipes e and b is made, either by slitting the upper end of the latter or by means of asuitable packing, or in any other equivalent and well-known manner. The upper end of pipe (2 is bent or curved. as shown in Figs. 1, 2, and 3, and is provided in its extreme end with a detachable nozzle, 6', having a delivery-opening, c of a reduced size as compared with the interior diameter of the pipe e, as shown in Fig. 3.
To the out-side of the oil-reservoir a is secured, ina suitable manner, the pump-cylinder f, that is closed in its lower end, preferably by means of a suitable screw-plug, f, or in an equivalent manner.
To the upper end of the pump-cylinder f is screwed the cap f, provided with a suitable striding-box, f gis the pump-piston, located within pump f, and provided with a suitable packing g. g is the piston-rod, attached to' or made in one piece with piston g, which piston-rod projects upward through the cap f and stufting-boxf, terminating in its upper end as a pressure plate or handle, 9 as shown. I
\Vithin the cylinder f is located the coiled spring f between the under side of piston g and the bottom f of said pump f, as shown in Fig. 3, and said spring serves the purpose The extreme of automatically raising the piston its pispump f with the lower end of valve-pipe b,
egtering the latter between the valve-seats c I and presses the latter downward until the coland cl, as shown in Fig. 3.
On the piston-rod g is located between the handle 9 and stuffing-boxy, an adjustable collar, y, secured in place by means of a setscrew, 9", or equivalent device. as shown in Figs. 1, 2, and 3. The said collar 9 may be adjusted on the piston-rod g and secured to it in any desired position, to serve as a stop against the-stuffing-boxf, so as to limit the downward stroke of the piston-rod and its piston, and by this means to regulate the amount of oil that is to be forced out at the nozzle 6 for every time that the handle 9 is depressed.
To the outside of the cylinder f, near its upper end, is attached a suitable handle or finger-guard, h, as shown, that serves as a rest for the operators fingers while in the act of depressing the piston-handle by the thumb to force the oil from the pump f into valve pipe 6, delivery-pipe e, and out through the nozzle 6.
Through the piston g is made a small vertical perforation, 1, closed .in its lower end by means of valve i, having a stem, 1', projecting up through perforation i, and attached to a suitable spring, i, as shown in Figs. 3 and 5, for the purpose of automatically keeping the valve iin a closed position, when the piston g is moved down, and this arrangement of perfoiationi and its self-closing valve is made for the purpose of allowing such portion of the oil that may leak by the piston into the upper part of cylinder f to be automatically carried back again below the piston I x 9 into the lower part of cylinder f, and thus prevent a back-pressure on top of piston g when the latter is moved upward by the influence of the coiled spring f".
The operation of this our.newly-invented oil-ejector is as follows: The cap a is removed .from top of oil-reservoir a, and the latter is then filled with oil or any other desired liquid lubricant, after which the cap a is screwed on tight on the upper end, a, of the reservoir a, as shown in Fig. 3. The delivery-pipe c is then pulled partially out of valve-pipe b, more or less, according to the location of the object that is to be oiled. The operator then grasps the reservoir a with one hand, to guide and steady the apparatus, in such a manner as to place the nozzle 0 in close proximity to the desired spot or hearing that is to be lubricated. With the fingers of his other hand placed below handle or finger-guard h, the operator places his thumb on top of handle 9 lar g is brought against top of stuffing-box f causing the lower valve, 0, to be closed and the valve (2 to open and a portion of the oil in pump f to be forced upward through perforation in valve-seat d, through valve-pipe I), de-
livery-pipe e, and out at the orifice e of the nozzle 6, in a regulated stream of a desired quantity. By letting go his hold of handle 9 the piston g is automatically raised by the influence of spring f to its upper normal position, and in so doing causes the valve d to be automatically closed and the valve 0 to open, when a portion of the oil in reservoir a flows into the space between valves 0 d, as well as into the lower part of pump-cylinder f, that is now automatically charged with afresh supply of oil and ready for use to oil any other desired part of machinery or shafting, and so on.
The pipes 12 6 may bevlocated on one side of reservoir a, if so desired, without departing from the essence of our invention.
Having thus fully described the nature, construction, and operation of our invention, we wish to secure by Letters Patent and claim 1. In an oil-ejector, the oil-reservoir a, valve-pipe b, with its valves 0 d, valveseats c d, and extension-pipe 6, having dischargenozzle 6 e", combined with a pump to draw the liquid from reservoir a and to force it out through the delivery and discharge pipe, as and for the purpose set forth.
2. An oil-ejector consisting, essentially, of a reservoir, a, a valvepipe, I), having valves 0 d, extension-pipe e, and a pump or pressure device, as and for the purpose set forth.
3. In an oil-ejector, the reservoir a, with inclosed valve-pipe b and valves 0 d, extension-pipe c, with discharge-nozzle 6 6 .combined with a pump or pressure device arranged on the outside of said reservoir a, as and for the purpose set forth.
4. In an oil-ejector having reservoir, valvepipe, and extension dischargepipe, as described, the pump 0, with its coiled spring f 4 and handle h, piston g, with its self-closing valve 1', and piston-rod 9, having upper handle, g and adjustable collar 9, as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof we have affixed our signatures in presence of two witnesses.
