Description

June 17, 1958 w. A. TAYLOR 2,838,873
DOLL WITH REMOVABLE 0R INTERCHANGEABLE HEADS Filed July 14, 1955 k l ll ialn .fi'. 72 x01 INVENTOR BY I I c ATTORNEYS DOLL WITH REMOVABLE OR INTERCHANGE- ABLE HEADS William A. Taylor, Detroit, Mich.
Application July 14, 1955, Serial No. 522,105 '1 Claim. or. 46-464) 7 a doll having interchangeable heads wherein the doll may be converted to simulate either a boy or a girl to the end that a single doll is adapted for a change in clothing, so that the clothing of any particular nationality may be used in dressing the doll to meet various requirements of use.
Still another object of the invention is to provide means for attaching and removing the head from the body of the doll, the removal and replacement of the head being accomplished without the use of tools or similar devices.
With the foregoing and other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention consists of certain novel details of construction and combinations of parts hereinafter more fully described and pointed out in the claim, it being understood that changes may be made in the construction and arrangement of parts without departing from the spirit of the invention as claimed. 2
Referring to the drawing:
Figure 1 is an elevational view of a portion of the body of a doll illustrating the head of the doll as attached to the body in accordance with the invention.
Figure 2 is a vertical sectional view through the upper portion of the body and head.
Figure 3 is a sectional view taken at right angles to Figure 2 on line 3-3 of Figure l.
Figure 4 is a sectional view taken on line 44 of Figure 2.
Referring to the drawing in detail, the doll comprises a hollow body 5 which may be constructed of any suitable plastic material, hard rubber or the like.
As shown, the body is provided with an opening 6 for the reception of the tube 7 which forms a part of the head section 8 of the doll, the head section being also preferably constructed of hard or solid plastic material or rubber, as desired.
Extending into the tube 7 is a tapered plug 9 that has its reduced end fitted in an opening of the partition 10 of the doll body which is secured within the doll body at a point adjacent to the shoulders thereo The partition 10 is formed with a tapered opening 11 tapered inwardly towards the lower end thereof so that United States Patent 0 the plug 9 will fit closely therein, and since the plug 9 is constructed preferably of rubber, it is obvious that a choke fit will be provided between the wall of the opening 11 and plug to securely hold the head in an upright position on the body.
Adjacent to the opening 11, is a cut away portion 12 that communicates with the opening 11, the cut away portion 12 presenting a shoulder 13 under which the pin 14 engages when the head is positioned on the body and the plug 9 positioned in the opening 11 and slightly turned, or rotated. It will of course be understood that the pin 14 is so arranged on the plug 9 that when the head is rotated to its proper position on the body, the pin 14 will contact the end of the cut away portion directly under the shoulder, as better shown by Figure l of the drawing.
Formed in the periphery of the plug 9 adjacent to the pin 14, is an annular groove 15 which is V-shaped in transverse section and partition 10 is formed with an annular rib 16 which is V-shaped in transverse section. Rib 16 snugly seats in groove 15 when pin 14 is engaged within shoulder 13 and cooperates with pin 14 in holding the head against accidental removal.
Should it be desired to replace the head with a different head, it is only necessary to rotate the head 8 in a clockwise direction, whereupon the pin 14 will move within the cut away portion 12, disengaging the shoulder 13. With the pin in this position, it is obvious that the head and plug may be withdrawn. When it is desired to replace the head, it is only necessary to insert the plug in the opening of the body until the pin 14 enters the cut away portion. The head is then rotated anticlockwise, causing the pin 14 to move under the shoulder 13, again locking the head in its proper position.
While I have shown and described a method of securing interchangeable heads to a doll or figure toy body, it is to be understood that the principle can be readily carried out in connecting the arms or legs of the doll or figure toy, without departing from the spirit of the invention.
Having thus described the invention. what is claimedis:
A doll comprising a hollow torso-shaped body having a neck opening, a partition of solid construction secured within the body at the neck region thereof, said partition having a tapered opening in alignment with said neck opening, an annular inwardly projecting rib adjacent the upper end of said tapered opening, a head section, a tapered rubber plug connected with the head section adapted to extend into the opening of said partition, and said plug having an annular groove in which said rib snugly engages for frictionally holding said plug and head section to the body against accidental displacement, said partition having a cut away portion adjacent to the opening, said cut away portion defining a shoulder, and a pin extending laterally from said plug adapted to move into said cut away portion and engage under said shoulder,
said rib being positioned above the bottom of said cut away portion.
