l This invention relates -to article holding inserts for cartons, having particularly reference `vto an apertured insert which is bendable and separable across its article holding portion, thereby readily permit-ting the same to be opened to receive the article within the apertured portion, and then closed interlockingly to e-ngage the same, and `the provision of such an insert is'the principal object of the invention.

Conventional inserts .of this general type are provided with apertured Vportions that are not separable and which are adapted only slidably to receive 'the articles therein. This is a matter of some inconvenience since only certain types of articles vcan ;be fac'commodated vby such inserts and the inserts .are therefore limited as to size, construction and adaptabllty. Other similar inserts have notched portions into which the larticles can be placed, but they are not 'adapted interlockingly to engage the articles and hold 'them in place and there is always present the danger that they will fall out of their position in the carton, especially When placed in an upright or inclined position for display purposes.

More specifically, therefore, it is another object of the invention to overcome the foregoing difficulties and disadvantages and to provide an insert having spaced, aligned apertures therein disposed along opposite sides of an axis thereof, and provided with article retaining sections lying along said axis with openings connecting the apertures, so that the sections readily can be separated to permit an article to be located in the aligned apertures and the sections returned to closed position overlying the article interlockingly to hold the same in the insert.

Another object of the invention is to provide such an article holding insert having extension members laterally connected to the article holding portion adapted to rest on the bottom of the carton and to abut the walls thereof to aid in securing the article holding portion in upraised position.

Another object of the invention is to provide such an article holding insert having longitudinal rows of such apertures to hold a plurality of articles, with a score line running along the axis between said rows, Whereby the article holding section readily can be bent to upright angular position.

Another object of the invention is to provide such an article holding insert in which parallel score lines are arranged along the extension members perpendicularly vto the apertures in order that the article retaining sections readily 2 can be separated to receive articles in the japertures.

Other objects vof the invention will in part Vbe obvious and will in part :appearhereinafteiz `The invention accordingly comprises an article holding insert possessing the features, properties, and-the relation of elements which will be'exemplified in vthe :device hereinafter descrbed vand the scope of the application of which Will be indicated in the -claim.

Referring more particularly to the drawing, there is shown generally at IO an article holding insert adapted for use with any suitable carton, especially a display type carton, in which articles held in position by the insert can be exhibited even when the carton With such an insert and articles secured therein is placed in an upright or inclined position.

The insert preferably comprises a die-cut and scored blank with an intermediate article holding portion II. This portion is provided with spaced, aligned apertures |2 disposed on opposite sides of one axis of the blank. A score line |3 runs along said axis between said apertures With the portions therebetween constituting article holding sections 14 which are adapted interlockingly to hold articles placed in position within the apertures.

On opposite sides of the apertures are located parallel score lines |5 and IG and these define the area of the article holding portion.

Outwardly projecting from the article holding portion ll are extension members l'l and I 8 and these are provided With parallel score lines :9 which are arranged normal to the apertures t will be observed that the article holding sections |4 are provided by a slit or opening 20 connecting each of the apertures so that each section Il can be separated to receive an article in the apertures as illustrated in the drawing.

When the insert is put to use, the intermediate portion I is bent along the score line I 3, and along the score lines |5 and IG in such a manner that this portion assumes an upraised or angular position. Thereafter the insert is bent along any of the score lines 19 aligned With the apertures l2, as shown in Figs. 5 and 6, to separate the article holding sections |4 for the reception of one or more of said articles. Immediately upon receipt of each article, the insert is returned to its unopened position so that the sections H Will surround the article and interlockingly engage the same and hold it positively in fixed position.

The extension members ll and [8 also aid in holding the intermediate article holding portion H in raised position and when placed in the carton the insert will rest along the bottom thereof. The extensions Il and |8 are preferably of such width that they will engage or abut the side walls or other portions of the carton, whereby the entire arrangement may be securely held in position therein. However, they may be of a shorter width than the article as shown in the drawing, of the same width, or of even a greater width depending on the nature of the carton for which the insert is intended and the type of article to be accommodated.

Since certain changes may be made in the above article and different embodiments of the invention could be made without departing from the scope thereof, it is intended that all matter contained in the above description or shown in the accompanying drawing shall be interpreted as illustrative and not in a limiting sense.

v provided with spaced aligned openings therein disposed along opposite sides of one axis thereof, and adapted to receive articles therein transversely of said axis, extension members connected to opposite sides of said article holding portion lying in a single plane adapted to rest on the bottom of said carton and against the walls thereof to maintain said article holding portion in angular upraised position, said article holding portion having article retaining sections lying along said axis between said aligned openings, spaced slits traversing said article holding portion from one score line to the other including said article retaining sections, said slits extending diametrically across said aligned openings, and score lines traversing said extension members in alignment with said slits, whereby said insert can be bent transversely of said axis so that said article retaining sections readily can be separated to receive said articles in said openings.
