Description
July 22, 1952 c. WELSHENBACH GOLF CLUB BOX Filed Feb. 12, 1949 INVENTOR Charles D- wlshenback ATTORNEYS Patented July 22, 1952 GOLF CLUB BOX Charles 1). Welshenbach, Sandusky, Ohio. as-
signor to The Hinde & Dauch Paper Company, Sandusky, Ohio, a corporation of Ohio Application February 12, 1949,- Serial No. 76,140
This invention relates to boxes for golf clubs and the like and has for its object to provide a box suitable for use as a shipping container and for display purposes.
Further objects of the invention are to provide a knockdown container that provides separating partitions at its opposite ends for spacing the ends of elongated articles such as golf clubs, and to provide a knockdown container formed from sheet material covered on one side only with white or colored paper and so constructed that visible parts of the finished container are formed by the paper covered side of the material.
With the above and other objects in view, the invention may be said to comprise the box as illustrated in the accompanying drawings and hereinafter described, together with such variations and. modifications thereof as will be apparent to one skilled in the art to which the invention pertains.
Reference should be had to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification in which:
Figure 1 is a top plan view of a box embodying the invention;
Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the box, one end portion being broken away and shown in section;
Fig. 3 is a transverse section through the box taken on the line indicated at 33 in Fig. 1;
Fig. 4 is a sectional view taken as indicated by the broken line 4-4 in Fig. 3;
Fig. 5 is a section taken on the line indicated at 5-4 in Fig. 3; and
Fig. 6 is a fragmentary plan view showing one of the two identical ends of the blank from which the box is formed.
The box of the present invention has a knockdown body made from a one-piece blank of sheet material such as paperboard, one of the two identical ends of the blank being shown in Fig. 6 of the drawings. The box body has a bottom I formed from the central portion of the blank as shown in Fig. 6, and side and end walls that are integral with the bottom I and formed from folded portions of the blank surrounding the central bottom portion I. The side walls have body portions 2 which are connected to the opposite sides of the bottom I by fold lines 3, each of the side walls having a liner section 4 that is connected to the body section 2 by a fold line 5 and which is folded inwardly to contact the inner face of the body section 2.
In the box of the present invention the end walls are stiffened by flaps hinged to the ends of the side walls and these flaps also provide 3 Claims. (01. 229-427) partitions that project into the box from the end walls. Flaps are preferably provided at the ends of each body section 2 and each liner section 4 and the two flaps at each end of each side wall are preferably of different lengths, the longer flaps having end portions that form the partitions.
As shown herein, the body sections 2 of the side walls have end wall flaps 6 that are connected thereto by fold lines I. The flaps 6 are disposed perpendicular to the sides and bottom of the box and are of a length not more than half the width of the bottom I so that they can be disposed in alinement end to end as shown in Fig. 4 of the drawings.
Each of the liner sections! of the side walls is provided with end flaps longer than the flaps 8, each of the end flaps of the liner sections 4 comprising a wall portion 8 connected to the section 4 by a fold line 9 and a'partition portion I0 connected to the body portion '8 by a fold line II. The wall portions 8 are in face to face engagement with the flaps 6 and the partition portions III are engaged back to back and project into the box parallel to the side walls and midway between the same as shown in Fig. 4. Each of the end walls has a body section I 2 connected to an end of the bottom I by a. fold line I31 and each of the body sections I2 has two liner sections |4' spaced by a slot I5 and connected thereto by fold lines I6.
In assembling the box the side walls are first folded to vertical position with the shorter flaps 6 and the wall portions 8 of the longer flaps disposed above the bottom of the box at right angles to the sides and bottom as shown in Fig. 4, after which the end walls are. folded to vertical position, bringing. the body portion I2 of each end wall in engagement exteriorly with the flaps 6, after which the liner sections I4 are folded inwardly against the inner faces of the wall portions 8 of the longer flaps, the liner sections I 4 being of a width to fit between the liner section 4 of a side wall and the partition portions I0 of the end flaps as shown in Fig. 4. The liner sections I4 thus serve to lock the partition portions III in abutting relation and to hold the side walls in vertical position.
A bottom liner I! is preferably placed on the bottom I and is of a size to fit within the side and end walls with its side and end edges underlying the lower edges of the liner sections 4 and I I.
The sheet material from which the box is formed is preferably covered on one side with a white or colored paper facing l 8 and the blank is folded so that the paper facing is upon the exterior of the sides, ends and bottom of the box. The paper facing I8 is also on the exposed faces of the liner sections 4 and M and the partition flaps H3. To strengthen the bottom of the box a fiat liner H formed of the same material as the body of the box is placed upon the bottom of the box, the liner H being of a size to substantially fit within the body sections 2 and I2 of the side and end walls so that its edge portions underlie the lower edges of the liner sections 4 and M. The liner section I! is preferably cut from the same stock as the body of the box and has a paper facing (8 on the upper sidethereof, there by providing a white or colored facing forthe bottom of the box.
It is to be understood that inaccordance with the provisions of the patent statutes variations and modifications of the specific devices herein shown and described may be made without departing from the spirit. of the invention.
