Description

N. HOMES. Straw and Root Cu tter.
NO. 26676. Patented Jana 3, 1860.
FIG-.2
i 1 f/VESSES i Phulmullvogmphcn Washingtom n. C.
UNITED l STATES PATENT OFFICE. l
N. HOMES, OF LAONA, NEW YORK.
srmw-ourrnn.
Specification of LettersPatent No. 26,676, dated 'J'anuary 3, i
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, N. HOMES, of Laona, in the county of Chautauqua and State of New York, have invented a new and improved Machine for Cutting Straw, Roots, Stalks, &c.; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exactdesCription of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part ofthis specification, in which Figure 1, 1s a front view of my invention. Flg. 2, 1s a transverse vertlcal sectlonof the same.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the two figures.
This invention consists in combining with an ordinary reciprocating knife and gate, a leger knife arranged to operate con ointly with the upper knife substantially as hereinafter described for the purpose of facilitating the cutting operation.
To enable those skilled in the art to fully understand and construct my invention I will proceed to describe it.
A, represents an upright framing in which a vertically reciprocating knife gate B is placed and allowed to work freely up and down. This knife gate has a knife C, fitted obliquely in it, as shown clearly in Fig. l. The upper endofthe knife gate B, has a hand lever D, connected to it by a link a a. One end of the lever D, is curved downward and has a slotted plate I), attached to its lower end, said plate 6, having secured to it by a screw or bolt 0, one end of a bar at, to which a knife E, is attached, the opposite end of said bar being secured by a screw or bolt 6, to a bar F, the lower end of which is connected by a joint f, to one side of the framing A, as shownclearly in Fig.1. The
bar F, may be formed of two parts "connected by a slide joint and bolt so as to admit of the bar being extended from time to crank pulley J to which atreadle K,is connected by a pitman L. v y n time to compensate forxthe wear of the 3 knife E. The lower partofthe knife gate' B, is connected by ,apitman g,to a cranlc pulley G, which is placed on a shaftH,hlav ing a fly wheel I, on itgand also another v I The framing A,lisplacedl directly in :front of a proper feedlbox, rthetwo knives (XE,
working overits mouth and thebasils ofthe two knives are formedat opposite sides sog that the cutting edges will work overjeacli other in contact and produceiza cleanfcut, v
the substance to be cut,;shown in red being fed between the knives by any propermeans,
The knife C,it will be seenhas avertical j movement and the knife \E, a horizontal;
drawing and upward out, power being applied by means of thelever Dland treadleK,
It will be seen from the above description that the two knives will cut with far greater?" ing knife C, alone and it will also beseen j; by connectingthe fiy wheel and treadle to l the knife gate B, the power of the operator, 1 may be applied to the machine in a very advantageous manner- .1 The cost of the supp1efmental knife E, is not great, in fact inap-fl facility than the usual verticaldreciprocat:
preciable when comparedwith the advan tagesobtained by it.
The bar d, and knife work in lots i in the uprights of thewframing A. l
I do not claim separately any of the in described parts, but, y
I do claim as new and desire tojsecu rejby The combination of the two knives (h ilihff l arranged to operatesubstantially as andlforf Letters Patent,
the purpose set forth.
