4 Claims.
The present invention relates to lounge bed construction and more particularly to construction in a lounge bed wherein the lounge back is pivotally mounted at what is its upper part while normally extending downwardly and forwardly from its pivotal axis, and may bev swung upwardly to an out-of-the-way position when the lounge bed is to be used as a bed.
An important object of the invention. is to provide novel and advantageous lounge bed construction of the general character specified.
Another object of the invention is to provide a lounge back structure adaptedto be mounted in a lounge bed frame by means of pivots projecting from opposite ends of the back and including means urging said back upwardly about said pivots and means for holding said back in different positions as desired.
Another object of the invention is to provide novel and advantageous lounge back controlling means which facilitates adjustment of the lounge back about its pivotal axis.
Still another object of the invention is to provide novel and advantageous lounge back controlling means at one end of a pivoted lounge back, adapted to enable adjustment of the lounge back about its pivotal axis by force exerted on the back at points remote from the end at whichthe controlling means is located.
Yet another object of the invention is to pro- A further object is to provide a lounge back .3-
structure having in opposite ends of its frame rotatably mounted aligned pins designed for nonrotatable attachment to the ends of the lounge bed frame, connections between the pivots and the ends of said lounge back frame urgin said I wardly from its normal position by helical springs around said pivots. between the frame ends of said back andv attached. at. their inner ends to said pins and at their outer ends to the frame ends of the lounge back. At the outer side of one end. of said back, the. corresponding pin passes through an inner plate fastened. to said. end of the lounge back at its outer face and through an. outer plate fixed to said pin. There is a protrusion or pin. at the inner face of the outer plate, and there are corresponding detent depressions in the outer face of said inner plate for en agement by said pin to hold the lounge back in its position for normal use or at different raised positions.
The sofa back unit of the present invention can readily be installed as a whole in the main frame of. the lounge bed.
Other objects, features and advantages will appear upon consideration of the following detailed description and of the drawings in which:
Fig. l is an elevation of the right end of a lounge bed embodying the present invention, parts being broken away to show underlying structure;
Fig; 2 is a sectional view taken along the line 2'2 of Fig. L;
Fig. 3 is a. view taken along the line 3--3 of Fig; 2;
Fig. 4; is a view taken along the line 44 of Fig.3.;
Fig. 5. is: a view taken. along the line 5-5 of Fig. 2;.
Fig. 6 is a view taken along the line 6-6 of Fig.2; and
Fig. 7 is a fragmentary view corresponding to the upper part of Fig. 1 but with the lounge back swung upwardly and rearwardly to its limiting position- Referring to' the drawingaldigsv l, 2 and 5 disclose the main features of a lounge bed to which the invention. is: applied- Said lounge bed has ends: In providing arms H, and at the rear, upright or high portions [-2- by which a lounge back ['3 is supported. The lounge bed may also be provided. with. one or; more; seat cushions M. The frame of the lounge back and the main frame may becovered by suitable upholstery material f5.
Each of the highportions [2 of said ends 50 may be provided at its: inner face with a recess i1. Over each recess H is a plate 18 in a countersunk recess.
Each of said plates I8 is provided with a keyhole slot t9 having an upper round. portion and a narrow part 21; extending downwardly therefrom. Each platei8- may be secured in position by any suitable means, as by wood screws.
Said lounge back I3 has aframe comprising ends 22 adapted. to swing on aligned pivots or pins 23 passing through. corresponding. openings- 24 therein. Near its outer end each pin 23 is slotted at opposite sides so as to leave a part 24a with flat opposite faces and adapted to fit into the narrow part 2! of the corresponding keyhole slot 2c after the end of the pin has been inserted in the round part of the keyhole slot and the pin turned to the proper position. The inserted pin is then held against longitudinal movement and against turning.
At the inner side of each end 22 of the lounge back or back rest :3 there is a plate 25 through which the corresponding pin 23 passes. At the outer sides of frame ends 22, one of the pins 23 passes through a plate 26 and the other through a plate 2% shown at the left in Fig. 2 but actually at the right as viewed by one looking at the front of the lounge bed. As will be brought out hereinafter, said plate 25' forms part of means for holding the lounge back or back rest in different positions to which it is turned about the common axis of the pivots or pins 23. The plates 25, 26 and 26 are secured to the frame ends 22 by suitable means, for example bolts 2? passing through the frame ends 22 and the plates on opposite sides thereof.
Mounted on the pins 23 inside the frame ends 22 are helical springs 28 of which the inner ends are fixed to the inner ends of pins 23 by suitable means such as headed studs 29 enclosed by loops at the inner ends of said springs 28. The outer ends of said springs 23 may be connected in a similar manner to studs 36 projecting from plates 25. Said springs 28, which are wound about said pins 23 in a direction such as to urge said back rest 53 upwardly from its lower or normal position, have a normal set tending to hold the pins in normal positions with respect to said frame ends 22, both longitudinally and angularly.
The structure thus far described is similar in many respects to devices proposed heretofore, which, however, had part of the positioning and holding means mounted in one end of the main frame of the lounge bed. In the form of the lounge bed disclosed, all adjusting and holding means are carried by the pins 23 which constitutes an important advance over the prior art.
Outside of said plate 2% is a plate having a central opening to receive the corresponding pin 23 and an outwardly extending collar 32 through which passes a set screw 33 to fix the said plate 3i at a definite position on the pin. The corresponding spring 23 tends to yieldably press the plate 23 and the corresponding plate (it together. tion the plates 28' and 3% are provided with cooperating detent means which in cooperation with the corresponding spring 28 provide adjustable means for holding the back rest in a suitable lower position or in several raised positions.
As illustrated the cooperating detent means on the plates 26' and 31 comprise a pin or protuberance 34 projecting from the inner face of plate 3!, a single depression or recess 35 to receive said pin 34 and hold said back rest in normal lowered position (Fig. 1) and a plurality of depressions 36 (Figs. 3, i and 6) to cooperate with pin 34 and hold the back rest 23 in different raised positions. Obviously the depressions 3'6 are in an arc of a circle and all of these do pressions and depression 35 are all at the same distance from the axis of pivot pin 23 as projection or protuberance 34 is from said axis. The
limit of the upward and rearward movement of According to the present invenback rest '3 is determined by engagement of a stop or lug 3'! on plate 25 with a stop or lug 38 on plate 3!.
The back rest l3 should be installed between the high portions ll of the ends of the main frame of the lounge beds while no cushions M are in position. The first step in installation may be to insert the outer ends of pins 23 between the high portions E2 of the main frame ends and into the round portions of the keyhole slots I9. This may involve the springing of the ends of the main frame or pressing in the pins 23 against the action of springs 22 Then by manipulating the lounge back or back rest the parts 24 may be moved into the narrow parts 2| of the keyhole slots. The pins 23 are then held against turning.
The springs 28 are arranged to be wound closer by swinging the back rest l3 in a counterclockwise direction. If necessary, the back rest may be moved through more than a complete turn. Before any angular movement is eifected to tighten the springs 22, the set screw 33 must be loose. When the springs have been suitably tightened, the back rest 13 may be held in the dash-and-dot position of Fig. 6. The plate 3! may then be positioned with the lug 38 in engagement with lug 31 of plate 26' and pin 34 engaged in the last recess 3%.
At this stage, the springs 28 provide the only means for determining the position of the back rest l3 along said pins 23. By pressing the back rest to the right (Fig. 2) the corresponding spring 28 will be compressed. The set screw 33 may then be tightened to hold the plate 3i fixed on the corresponding pin and assure suitable spring pressure to hold plates 3| and 26' together with said pin 34 in the last recess 36 of the set (dotted line showing of Fig. 6).
If the piece of furniture is to be used as a lounge, the back rest 13 may be swung forwardly and downwardly from the last raised position (Fig. '7) to the lowermost or normal position (Fig. 1). The recesses 36 will cooperate successively with pin 36. Further turning of the back rest will bring the single recess 35 into engagement with said pin 3d and the back rest to its Fig. 1 position as desired. During this down" ward swing of the back rest, the springs 28 will be tightened and the pressure holding pin it in recess 35 will be much greater than the pressure holding pin 34 in one of the recesses 36. In its lowermost position, said back or back rest I3 is supported or urged upwardly by the springs and is supported also by engagement of the pin 34 with the recess 35. With this arrangement, the lounge back or back rest It may be grasped at any point along its length and turned to the desired position.
It should be understood that various changes may be made and that certain parts may be used without others, without departing from the true scope and spirit of the invention.
