A. A. NORIN Aug. w, 194s.

Filed oct. 15, 1945 Patented Aug. 10, 1948 COMB `Allan A. Norin, Chicago, Il1.assignor to Gaylord Products, Incorporated, Chicago, Ill., a corporation of Delaware Application October 15, 1945, Serial No. 622,306V
(Cl. 132-26) l 3 Claims. l This invention relates t combs and is more particularly concerned with combs of the type adapted for use in arranging and maintaining coiffures or for securing hats, flowers, and other objects on the hair.
This invention contemplates the provision of a comb of this type in which the several teeth are formed and arranged to coact with each other for firmly engaging the hair to prevent retrograde movement and displacement of the comb from the hair.
This invention further contemplates the provision of a hair retaining comb provided with two rows of teeth formed of resilient material and arranged in staggered relation. Each tooth is provided with a relatively wide body portion for overlapping contacting engagement with adjacent teeth, and is also provided with a shank portion of relatively narrow width and disposed in spaced relation to adjacent shank portions to define hair receiving pockets.
This invention further contemplates the provision of a comb of this type which may be inexpensively manufactured of plastic or thermoplastic material to provide a comb of attractive, ornamental appearance and of resilient, yet serviceable construction.
This invention further contemplates an improved method of forming a comb having two rows of teeth arranged in staggered relation. This is accomplished by forming a pair of backings having depending teeth, and then gluing the backings to each other with the teeth of one row arranged in contacting staggered relation with respect to the teeth in the other row.
This invention embodies other novel features, details of construction and arrangement of parts which are hereinafter set forth in the specilication and claims and illustrated in the accompanying drawing wherein:
Fig. 1 is a front elevational view showing a comb embodying features of this invention.
Fig. 2 is a top plan view of same.
Fig. 3 is a transverse sectional view taken along the line 3-3 of Fig. l.
Fig. 4 is a sectional View taken along the line 4--4 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 5 is a fragmentary front elevational View showing a modified form of this invention.
Referring now to the drawing for a better understanding of this invention, and more particularly to Figs. 1 to 4 therein, a comb 8 embodying features of this invention is shown as comprising a pair of backings 9 and II which are preferably cemented together at I 2, but which 2 may be otherwise secured to each other, if desired. Each backing is provided with a plurality of similar depending teeth I3 arranged in equally spaced relation, and each tooth is formed witna relatively narrow shank Ill and a relatively wide body portion I6. As illustrated in Fig. 1, each shank is defined by concave side edges extending downwardly from the backing to merge with convex side edges dening .the body portion I6. The convex side edges converge toward the outer end of the body portion to terminate in a pointed terminal Il.
As viewed in transverse section, and as illustrated in Fig. 3, the body portion IE of each tooth i3 is formed with an arcuate inner surface I8 for contacting engagement withy the inner surfaces I8 formed on the opposing adjacent teeth. In order to maintaineach tooth I3 in yieldable contacting engagement with opposing adjacent teeth, a reinforcing rib I9 is provided to extend along the shank I4 from its body portion I6 to its backing. As illustrated in Fig. 1, it will be observed that the several teeth are formed and arranged to provide hair receiving pockets 2I between the side edges of adjacent shanks I4.
While a comb of the type thus shown and described may be constructed of various materials, it is preferably formed of plastic or thermoplastic material to provide the desired ornamenta-l and attractive appearance and to form resilient teeth adapted to yieldably resist retrograde movement of the comb from the hair.
Fig. 5 illustrates a modified form of this invention in which a comb of the type heretofore shown and described is provided with apertures 22 extending longitudinally along the body portion of each tooth 23 to provide flexible side walls 24 adapted to be yieldably urged towards each other by the passage of hair through the throat defined by the side edges of the adjacent teeth.
While this invention has been shown in but two forms, it is obvious to those skilled in the art that it is not so limited but is susceptible of various changes and modifications without departing from the spirit and scope of the claimed invention.
I claim as my invention:
l. In a comb, a pair of backings, a row of teeth depending from each backing, means for adhesvely uniting said backings to arrange the teeth of one row in contacting staggered relation with the teeth of the other row, said teeth having relatively narrow Shanks dened by concave side edges to provide hair receiving pockets between 2. In a comb, a pair of backngs, a row of teethv depending from each backing, means lfior adhesively uniting said backings to arrange theteeth of one row in contacting staggered relation with the teeth of the other row, said :teeth'iiavingirelatively narrow shanks dened by concave side edges to provide hair receiving pockets fbetween adjacent teeth, said teeth having body portions -of relatively greater width dened lby con-Vex sideedges merging with .the Vconcave:side-edges of said AShanks and extending downwardly ito Ater- 'minate .in pointed terminals, the convex sideiedges -of the :body 'portions of adjacent teeth beingldis- Aposedin overlapping relation, thebody portionof :said 'teeth being concave-convex in-cross-section with the convex surfaces :of adjacent teeth :norlmally ldisposed in :contacting Aengagement 4and yieldably vresistant Vto lmovement out of contact- Aing engagement, and reinforcing ribs'providedron the outer sides of said teeth Shanks.
.3. In a comba pair of backings, arowof fteeth .depending from each backing, means for adhesively uniting said backings to arrange the teeth of one row in contacting staggered relation with the teeth of the other row, said teeth having rela tively narrow shanks dened by concave side edges to provide hair receiving pockets between adjacent teeth, said teeth having body portions of vrelatively greater width defined by convex side `,edges merging with the concave side edges of said 4shanks and extending downwardly to terminate in pointed terminals, the convex side edges of the Vtbody portions of adjacent teeth being disposed in overlapping relation, the body portion of said teeth being concavo-convex in cross-section with 1^the'convex lsurfaces -of adjacent teeth normally disposed .in vcontacting engagement and yieldablyresistant 'to movement out of contacting en- .gagement,.and meinforcing ribs provided on the outer sides of said teeth shanks, the body portion 'oi-'said teeth being formed with elongated openings to provide yieldably resistant side portions.
