Description

UNITED ST A'INT JOHN L. ROWE, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
PEN-WIPER AND PAPER-WEIGHT.
To all whom it may concern.'
Be it known that I, JOHN L. Rows, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Implement or Device to Serve as a Pen-Wiper and Paper- /Veight; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, in which- Figure l, is a front View of my invention. Fig. 2, is a transverse vertical and central section of ditto.
Similar lette-rs of reference indicate corresponding parts in the two iigures.
This invention consists in having attached to a proper base or weight a cup or receptacle in which a sponge or other suitable absorbent is placed, and also having attached to said base or weight a" frame in which the arbor of a pressure pad, also an absorbent, is fitted, the whole being arranged substantially as hereinafter fully shown and described, whereby an excellent pen wiper in connection with a paper weight is obtained.
To enable those skilled in the art to fully understand and construct my invention, I will proceed to describe it.
A, represents the base of the implement which may be of cast iron of any proper dimensions and of rectangular or other form. To the base A, a frame B, is attached, said frame being formed of two uprights a, a, connected by a semi-circular cross-tie 7), which has a pendent tube c, at its center, said tube serving as a socket for an arbor or spindle CZ, within which and around the arbor a spiral spring c, is placed, as shown clearly in Fig. 2. To the upper end of the arbor or spindle al, a rod f, of larger diameter than the arbor a spindle d', is attached, and a button g, is at the upper end of rod f. To the lower end of the arbor or spindle cl, an inverted concave or dish-shaped plate 7L is attached and within the concave of this plate a sponge z', or other suitable absorbent is secured.
The frame B, and tube c, may be cast in one piece, malleable iron castings being used so as to admit ot the lower ends of the upright portions a, a, of the trame passing through the base and being secured therein by riveting. The arbor or spindle may be ot wrought or malleable cast iron. l On the base A, there is attached a cup or |receptacle This cup may be cast with the base and direct-ly at its center so as to be immediately under the sponge z'. The l cup j, is somewhat larger in diameter than i the plate 7L, and it contains a sponge k, which may be secured in it by any proper means.
The spring e, has a tendency to keep the sponge z', elevated, as the upper end of the spring bears against the lower edge of f, the plate L, serving as a stop in consequence of bearing against the lower end of tube c, see Fig. l.
The pen is cleaned by laying it on the sponge 7c, as shown in red, Fig. 2, and then depressing the sponge z', upon it by pressing down the button g, by means of the finger, the pen being drawn several times between the two Sponges until perfectly cleaned. The sponge may be kept moist by saturation, the cup y', preventing any casual dripping from the base in consequence of the pressure to which it may be subjected.
The base A, is to be sutliciently heavy to retain the implement in place when used and the implement therefore will serve the otiice of a paper weight, as the weight necessary to retain the implement will be suiticient for such purpose, and as both devices are intended for the desk, a very useful combination is obtained.
Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is,
The base or weight A, with cup y', attached, provided with the sponge 7c, in connection with the pressure pad or sponge t', connected with the base by means of the trame B, and arranged as shown and described, or in an equivalent way, for the purpose set forth.
JOI-IN L. ROWE.
