My invention relates to food containers and includes among its objects and advantages the provision of an improved container designed to hold a segment of pie.
g An object of my invention is to provide a container comprising a single blank of foldable material and foldable along predetermined lines to define a configuration closely conforming to the segment of a pie. The invention also contem- 1. plates a one piece blank foldable to define a complete inclosure and in which the blank includes formations for interlocking the folded blank in the form of a closed container.
A further object is to provide a container for a segment of pie comprising a single blank foldable along predetermined lines to define a com plete inclosure and in which the inciosure is so structurally arranged as to provide a sturdy container to facilitate handling, packaging, etc.
m Another object is to provide a container or merchandising package comprising a single blank foldable along predetermined lines to define a configuration closely simulating the shape of a segment of pie and in which the blank includes interlocking tabs and slots. The container or merchandising package is so designed as to permit stacking of the blanks in flat formation but in which the blanks are shaped to fold along predetermined lines to enable the user to quickly and easily shape the blanks into a complete inclosure for the food placed therein.
Another object is to provide a container for a segment of pie in which the container is so shaped as to be capable of close nesting within a group of containers and in which the formation of the container is such as to withstand the burden incident to nesting in a large group of containers.
A further object is to provide a container for a segment of pie comprising a single blank shaped to provide a complete inclosure' for the cut of pie and in which the container may be unlocked and flattened to be used in the manner of a plate in addition to constituting a merchandising package.
With these and other objects in view, this invention consists in certain novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter more fully described and 60 claimed.
For a complete understanding of my invention, reference is to be had to the followin description and accompanying drawing, in which Figure 1 is a perspective view illustrating my 6 container;
Figure 2 is a longitudinal sectional view; and
Figure 3 is a plan view of the blank which constitutes the container in its entirety.
In the embodiment selected to illustrate my invention I make use of a paper blank ll cut 5 to provide wings i2 and I4. Wing I4 terminates in a tab I6 having converging ends I! and 2|. Wing l2 terminates in a tab 22 somewhat triangular in configuration. Blank It includes a rectangularly shaped tab 24 which carries a tri- 1o angularly shaped locking tab. 26. The score lines 28, 30 and 32 which determine lines of bend are arranged to provide a triangularly shaped bottom 34. Score lines 36 are spaced from the score lines 30 and 32 so that the tabs 12 and I4 define 16 the sides of the container. The sides l2 and 14 are arranged in converging relation and meet at the point 38. Score lines 40 provide a line of bend between the tab 24 and the locking tab 28. The latter is provided with locking notches 42. m Tab 16 is provided with a clearance notch 44 and is provided with slots 46 and 48. Tab 22 includes a slot 50 and is notched at 52 to provide a locking tab 54. Tab 50 also includes a locking tab 58.
In operation, the segment of pie 58 may be placed on the bottom with the blank III in flat formation as illustratedin Figure 3. The tabs 12 and I4 are then bent along the score lines 20 and 32 after which the tabs 20 and 22 o are bent inwardly along the score lines 36 with the tab Ii positioned underneath the tab 22. Locking tab 54 is then inserted through the slot 4i and the tab 52 is inserted through the slot 48. Tab 24, which constitutes one'side or the 5 end of the container, is then bent upwardly along the score linev 28 and the tab 26 is then bent inwardly of the container along the score lines 40 and inserted through the slot 50.
To insert the tab 56 in the slot 42 it is neceso sary to bend the tab 22 slightly but as the tab assumes its original position, the tab 58 is eflectively'locked. With the tabs ii and 22 arranged in overlapping relation, according to Figure 1, the notch 44 underlies the slot 50 so as to pro- ,5 vide accommodations for the extreme point of the tab 26. Referring to Figure 2 it will be noted that the side walls, or tabs I2 and I4, widen in the direction of the tab 24 so as to provide accommodation for the thicker end of the segl0 ment of pie, as at 6!. 4
While the container constitutes a single sheet of paper or equivalent material the blank is easily foldable along predetermined lines to deline a complete inclosure for the food. Because i of the efi'ective interlocking connection between the overlapping tabs, the container may be handled with no danger of becoming accidentally opened, and the parts are so interlocked and positioned as to provide a relatively sturdy package. When opened, the blank may be flattened and will then serve the purpose of a plate. The containers may be stacked in closely nested relation and in strength is suflicient to withstand the burden of such nested stacking.
What is claimed is: I
A container of the type described comprising a one-piece blank scored to provide a bottom in the shape of a triangle and side walls extending along the sides of the triangle, said blank being scored to provide an end wall extending along the base of the triangle, one of said side walls being scored to provide a. first tab having two ond tabs partly overlapping with the first tab lying l0 underneath the second tab, said third tab partly overlapping said first and second tabs, and said first tab being provided with a recess located underneath the slot in the second tab for receiving the portion of the third tab inserted 13 through the slot in the second tab.
