Although thecap 12 will be described herein as being suitable for covering a wearer's thumb, it should be appreciated that acap 12 that is suitable for being worn over a wearer's finger is also included within the scope of the present invention. - The
cap 12 includes abody portion 14 and a grippingportion 16. Thebody portion 14 has aninner surface 18 and anouter surface 20, wherein theinner surface 18 is suitable for facing, and being in contact with, the wearer's skin when thecap 12 is being worn. The grippingportion 16 is positioned on theouter surface 20 of the cap. - The
body portion 14 of thecap 12 further comprises afront side 22 and arear side 24. Thefront side 22 is suitable for covering the front portion of the wearer's thumb or finger, and therear side 24 is suitable for covering the back portion of the wearer's thumb or finger. As such, therear side 24 of thecap 12 covers the wearer's fingernail. As shown inFIG. 1 , the grippingportion 16 of thecap 12 is positioned on thefront side 22 of thecap 12 such that when thecap 12 is worn by a user, the grippingportion 16 is positioned over the part of the wearer's finger that contacts the buttons, levers or other user activation element of a user input device. In accordance with a non-limiting example of implementation, the grippingportion 16 is limited to being positioned on thefront side 22 of thecap 12. - In accordance with a non-limiting example of implementation, the
body portion 14 of thecap 12 is made of a resilient material such as rubber, silicone, neoprene, plastic or a blend of these materials. These materials have a relatively high coefficient of friction, and thus enable thecap 12 to stay in place on the wearer's thumb or finger when worn. It should be appreciated that thebody portion 14 of thecap 12 can be made of other materials known in the art without departing from the spirit of the invention. For example, thebody portion 14 of thecap 12 can be made of a fabric material such as spandex, lycra or a cotton/spandex, cotton/lycra blend. When thebody portion 14 is made of a fabric material, it is desirable that the material has elastic properties such that it fits snugly over a wearer's thumb or finger and stays in place. In the case where thebody portion 14 is formed of a fabric material, the shape of thebody portion 14 can be formed by sewing the fabric into the appropriate form. Alternatively, the shape of thebody portion 14 can be formed by adhesive, or heat sealing the material together. - In accordance with a non-limiting implementation, the gripping
portion 16 is also made of rubber, silicone, neoprene, plastic or a combination of these materials. It should be appreciated, however, that the gripping portion can be made of any other material known in the art that provides a good gripping surface. - The gripping
portion 16 can be made of the same material as thebody portion 14 of thecap 12 or alternatively the grippingportion 16 can be made of a different material than thebody portion 14 of thecap 12. In the case where the grippingportion 16 and thebody portion 14 are made of the same material, thecap 12 can be molded as a single integral piece. For example, both thebody portion 14 and the grippingportion 16 can be molded out of rubber. Methods of molding articles such as thecap 12 are known in the art, and as such will not be described in more detail herein. - Alternatively, in the case where the gripping
portion 16 is made of a different material, the grippingportion 16 can be applied to thebody portion 14 by being printed or stamped onto theouter surface 20 of thecap 12. The material of the grippingportion 16 and the material of thebody portion 14 can be different when it is desirable that thebody portion 14 of thecap 12 and the grippingportion 16 have different coefficients of friction. For example, it may be desirable for the grippingportion 16 to have a higher coefficient of friction than thebody portion 14. In the case where thebody portion 14 is made of a fabric material, the grippingportion 16 is preferably made of a non-fabric material that is printed onto thebody portion 14 of thecap 12. - As best shown in
FIG. 3 , the grippingportion 16 includes a plurality ofprojections 26 that extend from theouter surface 20 of thecap 12. It should be appreciated that in the case where the grippingportion 16 is printed onto thecap 12, theprojections 26 may not extend very far from theouter surface 20 of thecap 12. - In the non-limiting embodiment shown in
FIGS. 2 and 3 , thecap 12 includes a plurality ofventilation apertures 28. As mentioned in the background of the invention, after a prolonged period of playing video games, a player's hands and fingers can become sweaty. As such, it is desirable that thecap 12 includesventilation apertures 28 that provide air to the wearer's fingers, and reduce any discomfort caused by sweating. Theseventilation apertures 28 are particularly useful in the case where thebody portion 14 of thecap 12 is made of a non-breathable material, such as rubber. - In the embodiment shown in
FIGS. 2 and 3 , only therear side 24 of thecap 12 includesventilation apertures 28. However, it should be appreciated that theventilation apertures 28 can be located anywhere on thecap 12 without departing from the spirit of the invention. For example, theventilation apertures 28 can be included on thefront side 22 of thecap 12, on the sides of thecap 12, or uniformly over the entire surface of thecap 12 in order to provide a maximum amount of ventilation. In addition, it should be appreciated that theventilation apertures 28 can be of any shape and size without departing from the spirit of the present invention. For example, theventilation apertures 28 could be star-shaped, triangular-shaped or heart-shaped, among other shapes. It should also be appreciated that thecap 12 may not include anyventilation apertures 28 at all. - In the non-limiting embodiment shown in
FIGS. 2 and 3 , therear side 24 of thecap 12 includes twodecorative stripes 30. It should be understood that it is within the scope of the present invention for thecap 12 to include any type of decorative markings or decals. For example, thecap 12 may include decorative markings or decals in the form of patterns, shapes, text, sport team logos, images of popular characters from the video games or any other type of decorative marking imaginable. In accordance with a non-limiting embodiment, thecap 12 may include one or more decals that are associated with a feature of a video game. For example, the decal may be in the form of a video game logo or a video game character. - In addition, it should be appreciated that both the
body portion 14 and the grippingportion 16 can be of any color possible, or alternatively may be translucent. The color of thebody portion 14 and the color of the grippingportion 16 may be the same, or alternatively they may be different. - Although not shown in the Figures, the
cap 12 may also include other decorative items or decals such as wings or fins that extend from therear surface 24 of thecap 12. These components therefore add additional decoration to thecap 12 while avoiding interfering with the grippingportion 16 on thefront side 22 of thecap 12. It is also possible for theouter surface 20 of thecap 12 to include different textured surface finishes. For example, theouter surface 20 of thecap 12 may be molded such that its surface finish is in the form of fish scales, wings, feathers or waves, for example. These fish scales, wings or feathers can be made to look like a plane or a bird, protruding from the sides or top like a fin. - Shown in
FIGS. 4 and 5 is thecap 12 being worn by a user. As shown, thecap 12 is of a length (L) that is sufficient to cover at least up to the first knuckle of the thumb. - In the non-limiting embodiment shown in
FIGS. 1 and 5 , the grippingportion 16 of thecap 12 is in the shape of a fingerprint. More specifically, theprojections 26 of the grippingportion 16 are shaped and arranged so as to form an image of a fingerprint. It should be appreciated that the grippingportion 16 of thecap 12 can be of any shape and size, and can be arranged in any pattern or image, without departing from the spirit of the invention. For example, the grippingportion 16 may simply include a singlecircular projection 26 made of a material that has a relatively high coefficient of friction. Such a projection can be printed onto theouter surface 20 of the cap. - Shown in
FIGS. 6 and 7 is acap 34 in accordance with an alternative example of implementation of the present invention. Thecap 34 includes abody portion 35 and a grippingportion 36. Theprojections 38 of the grippingportion 36 are in the form of circular bumps that are arranged in a grid like pattern. Theseprojections 38 can be made of the same material as thebody portion 35, such that the grippingportion 36 is simply a portion of thebody portion 35 that is of a different texture. - Therefore, it should be appreciated that so long as the gripping portion of the cap provides a surface that is suitable for enhancing a wearer's grip of a hand held user input device, the projections can be of any shape, size, pattern or image, without departing from the spirit of the invention.
