GABMENT SHAPING MACHINE Filed July 19, 1934 2 Sheets-Sheet 2 Patented Aug. 17, 1937 UNITED STATES PATENT @FICE 2 Claims.
The object of my invention is to provide an improved garment-shaping machine, which is particularly useful in imparting the desired shape to collars and cuffs by heat and external pres- 5 sure.
An important feature of my device is the provision of a reciprocating die plate, which is adapted to be located within the plies of the material which form the garment, and which serves to l carry the garment into the dies in which pressure is applied to the garment and to be removed before the pressure is applied to the exterior of the garment. In the die plate, I have provided means for gently but firmly locating the garment l in accurate position within the dies, this means being withdrawn from the dies before the pressure is applied to the garment. It is thus possible to secure a more rapid and accurate finish of the garments operated on than in the devices of the prior art.
Other features of my invention will be readily apparent to those skilled in the art from the annexed drawings and specification at the end whereof the novel features of my invention will be pointed out and claimed.
In the drawings:
Fig. 1 is a side View of my device, with parts in vertical cross-section.
Fig. 2 is a front elevation of my device, with the die plate and dies omitted for the sake of clarity.
Fig. 3 is a top plan View of the die plate and die.
Fig. 4 is a cross-section on line 4-4 of Fig. 3, viewed in the direction of the arrows.
In that embodiment of my device chosen for description and illustration, my device is shown as consisting of an indestructible, steel, welded frame I, conveniently made of sheet metal or the like. Frame I carries, at its upper end, a sloping top 2 having an opening 3 therein. Surrounding opening 3 there is mounted a plate 4 having a slot 5 opening from one edge thereof. Top 2 also has an opening B in its upper surface, in which is supported a switch (not shown). 'Iop 2 also has an opening l therein, through which projects the operating lever for the dies, which will be hereafter described. Top 2 has, at its front edge, a rre-enforcement 8, conveniently made by turning down and welding a portion of the material cut away from the opening 3. Mounted on plate 4, there are provided rails 9 which form a support or table for ball-bearings Ill which support a sliding carriage II, on which is mounted 55 the forming die plate I2 which may be conven- I8 and having at its opposite end a treadle I9.
Mounted on plate 4, so as to form the ends of slot 5, there are provided stops 2li and 2l of rubber or similar flexible material.
Also mounted on plate 4, to the rear of sliding carriage II, is a support 22 on which is mounted the lower die 23, on which are mounted the upper dies 24 which have brackets 25 secured thereto, through which passes a pin 26 carried in the ends of yoke 21, which is pivotally mounted on shaft 28 carried in brackets 29 on lower die 23. Side plates 30 and 3l co-operate with a triangularly shaped center plate 33 to form the sides or edges of the dies. These plates are all detachably secured to die 23 and may be of various shapes for Various shapes of garments. Leaf-springs 32 stress the'upper dies 24 downward and backward towards side plates 30-3I and center plate 33, about brackets 25 on shaft 26, as a pivot. Yoke 2l is mounted at its rear on a lever 34, which has a pivotal connection with link 35, which, in turn,
has a pivotal connection Within bell-crank lever 3 36 mounted on shaft I8 and having a pedal 3l at its forward end. A spring 38 is connected between lever 34 and top 2, and stresses the lever 34 about pivot 28 so that the upper dies 24 are` normally in raised or open position. Top 2 has a bracket 39 secured thereto, in which is mounted a screw 4l) which serves as a stop for the upward, pivoting movement of lever 34 about shaft 28, and hence limits the distance to which upper dies 24 can approach lower die 23.
Beneath lower die 23, and in heat conducting relation thereto, is mounted a heater 4I, which may conveniently be electric or of a type well known in this art. Heater 4I has a lead-wire cable 42 connected thereto, which may conveniently be connected to the switch mounted in opening 6.
In the operation of my device, garments to riage II assumes the position shown in dotted lines in Fig. 1. The pressure of the pedal I9 is then released and the weight of carriage II, together with the stress of spring I4 which has been elongated by the foregoing operation, returns the carriage II, and the parts connected. thereto, in the full line position shown in Fig. I, thus removing the die plate I2 from the garment but leaving the garment within the die. Pedal 31 is then depressed, actuating bell-crank lever k36, link 35, lever 34 and upper dies 24, so that the upper dies compress the garment against lower die 23, side plates 30 and 3I andcenter plate 33. The garment is thus caused, by the external pressure and heat, to conform' to the shape of the dies. Another garment is then placed over. the points of the die plate I2, this action serving to remove the garment which has already been treated from the dies, if the two garments are connected together as is customar` ily the case in collars; otherwise, the garment which has been operated on is removed from the dies by simply withdrawing it manually.
I do not intend to be limited save as the scope of the prior art and of the attached claims may require.
I claim:-
1. A garment-shaping machine, comprising in combination, a lower die having a recess therein having a point for shaping a point of a garment, an upper die (zo-operating with said lower die and I'GCBSS.
2. A garment-shaping machine comprising, in combination, a lower die having a pointed recess i therein suitable for receiving a pointed portion of a garment, a pivot mounted on said lower die and extending transversely of the point of said --V recess, a lever mounted on said pivot and having anend overlying said recess, an upper die of suitable shape to enter said recess and com# press the point of a garmentk in said recess, said upper die being pivotally mounted on said overlying end of said lever and being unguided except by the walls of said recess and by said pivot between said upper die and its supporting lever, and a spring pressing said upper die toward said lower die and toward the point of said recess about said pivot formed by the point of connection between said upper die and said lever.
