COWS TAIL HOLDER Filed Dec. 7, 1934 2 Sheets-Sheet 2 Inventm' Patented Sept. 8, 1936 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE" 1 Claim.
This invention relates to a cows tail holder.
One of the objects of the invention is to provide a cows tail holder that is constructed to enable the holder to be attached to the leg and the tail in an easy and expeditious manner.
Further objects of the invention are to provide a cows tail holder of the character referred to that is strong, compact and durable, having very few parts likely to need repair, that is thoroughly reliable for its intended purpose and comparatively inexpensive to manufacture.
With the foregoing and other objects in view the invention consists of a novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts, as will be hereinafter more specifically described and illustrated in the accompanying drawings wherein is shown the preferred embodiment of the invention, but it is to be understood that changes,
variations and modifications may be resorted to without departing from the spirit of the claim hereunto appended.
In the drawings wherein like reference characters denote corresponding parts throughout the several views:
Figure 1 is a fragmentary portion of a cow illustrating an adaptation therewith of a device in accordance with the present invention.
Figure 2 is a top plan view of the device in accordance with the present invention.
Figure 3 is a detailed vertical section taken substantially on line 3--3 of Figure 2.
Figure 4 is a plan view of the blank of metal from which one of the jaw members is formed.
Figure 5 is a plan view of a metal blank from which the other movable jaw is formed.
Referring to the drawings in detail, A indicates a cow and 6 indicates one of the rear legs of the cow. 1 indicates the cows tail and the device constructed in accordance with the present invention is shown with one end clamped to the tendon of the rear leg 6 and the other end clamped to the cows tail I. The device in accordance with the present invention is preferably formed of sheet metal of sufficient strength to withstand the wear and tear to which the ordinary cows tail holders are subjected. The fixed member of the cows tail holder is indicated at B. The fixed member includes a flat intermediate portion 8 which merges at either end with the semi-circular gripping portions 9, In. There is a flange l l outstanding from the periphery of gripping member ID and another flange l2 extending outwardly from the gripping member 9. Between the gripping members 9 and Hi there is a substantially rectangular opening I3 in the flat portion 8 and along the opposed longitudinal edges of the opening 13 are-depending flanges l4 perpendicular to the flat part 8, which depending portions carry the ends of the pivots for the movable jaws as will hereafter appear.
One of the movable jaws is formed with a flat intermediate portion I5 which merges adjacent its outer end witha semi-circular gripping member I6 and the latter terminates in an end flange I1 along the periphery thereof which in closed position abuts the flange l2. There is an integral handle I8 adjoining the flat portion l5 and extending in an oblique direction downwardly. At the juncture of the handle I8 with the flat portion Hi there is a triangular boss I9 projecting upwardly. On the side edges of the flat portion l5 are a pair of apertured upstanding ears 20 which rock on a shaft 2| the ends of which are journalled in the depending portions I4. The shaft 2| extends across the opening l3. Another movable jaw is formed with a flat intermediate portion 22 which merges at its rear end with an upwardly sloping portion 23 that bears on the apex of the boss 19. The outer end of this other movable jaw is formed with a semicircular portion 24 which merges with the flat portion 22 and on the periphery of member 24 is formed'a flange 25 that in the closed position bears against the flange II. The cooperating flanges I2, I! and II, 25 restrict the pockets 2B, 21 respectively between the respective semi-circular members. On the upper face of the intermediate flat portion 22 are a pair of upstanding spaced ears 28 through which extends a shaft 29 and the ends of the shaft are mounted in the dependingvportions l4. A coil spring 30 embraces the shaft 29 between the ears and has a projecting end 3| bearing on the fixed member B, while the other end 32 of the spring bears upon the upstanding portion 23. It will thus be seen that the tension of the spring bears down on the portion 23 and holds it engaged with the boss l9. It will be apparent that the movement of handle 3 will transmit motion to the other clamping jaw whereby both clamping be held in the pocket 26 while the leg tendon 01' the rear leg of the cow will be substantially confined within pocket 21. The relatively thin portion of the leg inwardly of the tendon will be gripped between the flanges II and 25.
Having described my invention, what I claim as new is:
A cow tail holder comprising a fixed member consisting of a single piece of material having a flat intermediate portion with a rectangular opening therein, flanges depending from two parallel sides of said opening, spaced transversely extending pivot pins secured between said flanges, a pair ofjaws each having a pair of aossjsss -"jaws will be moved in unison. The cows tail will spaced laterally extending apertured ears, one pair of each being pivoted on each of said pins, the inner end of one of said jaws extending inwardly, and the adjacent end of the other jaw projecting outwardly, a boss on one of said aforementioned ends cooperating with the adjacent end whereby movement of one jaw imparts movement to the other jaw, the ends of the fixed member and the ends of the pair of jaws formed to provide clamps, and a spring encircling one of the pins and associated with one of the jaws and exerting tension to retain the jaws in gripping relation.
