(Cl. 206-76) The object of the invention is to provide a jewelry tray for jewelry such as rings, so that the rings may be locked in the tray in such a way as to permit their examination by prospective purchasers but to preclude their surreptitious removal; to provide a jewelry tray which is removably anchored in its position in a show case or window, so that it may not be removed bodily by a thief; to provide a jewelry tray in which the retained rings or jewelry may be readily released singly by a salesman in making a sale; and generally to provide a device of the kind indicated which is of simple form and susceptible of cheap manufacture. r

The tray comprising the invention embodies a hollow base portion 10 bounded at the marginal edge on the top face with a molding 11 to give the general appearance of, the conventional tray. The bottom wall of the hollow base portion 10 is formed with a door 12 of substantially the full area of the base, the door being hingedly mounted as indicated at 14. The hollow base portion is made preferably of tough sheet metal and the hinge is provided by the formation of intercurrent barrels on the door and adjacentedge of the bottom wall of the base and these barrels constitute a supporting foo-t at one side of the tray, the opposite supporting foot being formed by the barrel housing 15 of the lock 16 which is carried by the door, the barrel housing extending through the door but the lock being carried on the interior of the latter, so that its bolt 17, when projected, may engage behind an inturned lip portion 18 of the bottom wall of the base, this lip portion constituting a keeper for the lock. The rings 21 are secured against surreptitious removal by means of clips 22 which are slipped through the rings around those portions 1 projecting into the interior of the base.

The molding 11 and the top surface of the upper wall 19 of thebase are provided with a covering 23, which may be of cloth or a layer of an appropriate decorative material, to give an at tractive appearance to the tray.

The shelf 24 on which the tray is displayed, whether it be the top of the show case or a shelf therein or the floor of a show window, is formed with an opening 25, this opening being to permit the passage of an anchoring cable 26 terminally secured to the interior-of the base portion and passing through an opening in a portion of the bottom wall of the latter and being formed with a terminal latch hook 27 to be engaged with an anchoring eye 28 which is secured to some stationary portion of the show window or show case construction, as indicated at 29.

The tray may be readily removed from its position by release of the latch hook 2'7, this, however, being only accessible to-the storekeeper or his authorized assistants. When a ring or rings are to be inserted or removed from the case, the door 12 is opened by releasing the bolt of the lock 16. Then such rings as it is desired to remove are taken from their seats after the removal of the anchoring clips, orsuch rings as it is desired to insert are positioned in the desired seats and clips attached, the door being thereafter locked and the tray placed in its display position with the latch hook connected with the eye 28. The cable 26 is preferably a steel cable of suflicient tenacity to resist ready severance by a wire cutter. It will, however, permit movement of the tray a reasonable amount and rings carried in the tray may be examined without the possibility of their being surreptitiously removed, since they may be lifted from their seats high enough to bring the clips into engagement with the under face of the top 'wall which will permit sufficient swinging movement of a ring under examination to see all parts of the same.

The invention having been described, what is claimed as new and useful is: 5

1. A jewelry display tray having a hollow or chambered base with its upper wall formed with ring seats, a lock-controlled door constituting the bottom wall of the base, and clips within the base and engageable with those portions of the rings projecting through the seat into the interior of the base, the door being of substantially the area of the bottom of the base and hinged at one side edge to the latter and a lock carried at the other edge of the door and having a locking bolt engageable behind an inturned lip of the bottom wall of the base, the door overlapping those portions of the bottom wall of the facedefining the opening which the door closes.

2. A jewelry display tray having a hollow or chambered base with its upper wall formed with ring seats, a lock-controlled doorconstituting the bottom wall of the base, and clips within the base and engageable with those portions of the rings projecting through the seat into the interior of the base, and a. flexible anchoring cable. terminally secured to the base on the interiorvof the latter and extending to the exterior of the'base and being provided with a terminal Iastenerfor engage- 1' 'ment with a fixed anchorage.
