HINGE FOR DOORS 0R WINDOWS Filed NOV. 25. 1929 iii/07%?? WEB Jkww's Patented Jan. 5, 1932 UNITED S AT PATENT OFFICE WILLIAM J). FERRIS, or STERLING, ILLINOIS, ASSiGITOR To FRANTZVMANV'UFACTURING 00., or STERLING, ILLINOIS, A oonrone'rron or ILLINOIS HINGE FOR noonson wmnows Application filed November 25 1929. Serial No. 409,477.
This invention relates to doors or windows that are hinged to swing about an axis, usually a vertically disposed axis, and which in some cases are mounted to move up and down when in closed position.
Generally stated, the object of the inventionis to provide a novel and improved construction and arrangement whereby a door or window hinge is provided with adjustable friction means for frictionally holding the door or window in an open or partially open position, so that the door or window will not blow around, and will not be liable to slam and break something when closed. 7
It is also an object to provide a novel and improved construction and arrangement whereby a door or windowhinge is provided with a sliding connection, between the stationary and movable sections thereof, whereby the movable section and the door or window supported thereby may move up and down, which vertical displacement is necessary in the opening and closing of some doors or windows. I 3
It is also an object to provide certain details and features of construction and combinations tending to increase the general efficiency and desirability of a window or door hinge of-this particular character.
To the foregoing and other useful ends, the
invention consists in matters hereinafter set forth and claimed and shown in the accompanying drawings, in which Fig. 1 is a front elevation of a door or window hinge embodyin the principles of the invention, showing a jacent portions of the door or window and the frame, and showing certain portions of the hinge in vertical section;
Fig. 2- is a similar view, but does not show any of the parts in section, and in this view the door or window is in raised position;
Fig. .3 a horizontal section on line 33 in Fig. 1 of the drawings; and
Fig. i is a Vertical section on line 4-4 in Fig. 1 of the drawings.
As thus illustrated, the invention comprises an upper hinge section 1 provided with a bearing portion 2, and provided with a struckout portion 3 forming a guide, this section of the hinge being secured by screws 1- to the door or window 5, which latter may be of any suitable character. The lower section 6 of the hinge hasa bearing portion 7, and a pin or pintle 8 is inserted through the bearing portions, as shown more clearly in Fig. 1 of the drawings. Said pin or pintle has a flange or shoulder9 upon which the portion 2 is supported, when the door or windowis in lowered position.
' A fiat piece 10 is interposed between the shoulder 9' and the fibre friction washer 11,
this piece 10 having a notch 12 at its outer end for engagement with the guide 3, previously mentioned. A bracket piece'13 is interposed between the washer 11 and the upper end of the bearing portion 7 thispiece 13 being secured to the window or door frame 14 by a screw 15, or other suitable means.
A metal washer- 16 and a nut17 and a lock-nut 18 are applied to the screw-threaded lower end portion of the pinor pintle 8, as shown, whereby "the friction between "the washer 11 and the fiatsurfaces of the metal pieces 10 and 13 may be regulated...
- With this construction, the door or win,- dow 5 may be moved up and down, as the bearing portion 2 can slide up and down on the upper portion of the pinor pintle'8, and the guide 3 will move up and down in the notch 12, whereby the door or window can be lowered in its closed position, as is necessarywith some doors or windows, in order to provide a more or less weather-tight joint at the lower edge of the door or window.
The pieces 10 and 13 provide broad friction surfaces, for engagement with. the washer 11, and in this way the door or window can be held frictionally in open or partially open position, thus preventing the door from swinging around or being blown shut. At
f 1. Adoor or window hinge comprising 1? hinge leaves having knuckles, having friction means distinct from the hinge itself, interposed between the opposing ends of two F knuckles of the hinge to frictionally hold the door or windowin open or partially open position, without preventing the opening and closing thereof, and provided with adjusting means for regulatingthe friction, said friction means comprising a shoulder on the pintle, between said knuckles, including a swinging member and a stationary member engaging the opposite sides of said washer, between said knuckles, and said adjusting means comprising a nut screwed on the lower end portion of said pindle, thereby operative to vary the'pressure on said washer.
. QQA door or windowrhinge comprising hinge leaves having knuckles, having friction means distinct fromvthe hinge itself, interposed between the opposing ends of two knuckles or the hinge V to frictionally hold the door orwindow in open or partially open position, without preventing the opening and plates, anda shoulder on the pintle of the hinge,-engaging said last-mentioned late, said adjusting means being on one end 0 said pintle and serving to regulate the pressure of said shoulder on said plates and washer, and. said shoulder forming a step bearing to support theknuckle that is rigid with said door or window.
