Patented July 21, 1931 CLARENCE L. LARSON, OF SEATTLE, WASHINGTGN LABEL ATTACHING nEvIcE Application filed August 21, 1928. Serial No. 300,988.
This invention relates to hand stamps, and its object is to provide label attaching devices therefor which will be of simple and inexpensive construction, easy to apply and 5 eflicient in operation.
The invention consists in the novel c011- struction, adaptation and combination of features hereinafter described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings,-
Figure 1 is a perspective view of a hand stamp with an embodiment of the present invention applied thereto; Figs. 2, 8 and 4 are detached perspective views of the label cover, the label and the key piece, respecis a transverse vertical sectional view of a portion of the stamp body which is adapted to accommodate my invention; Fig. 6 is a view similar to Fig. 5 with the label guard inserted; and Fig. 7 is a simwith the label and associated parts in place.
In said drawings, I show in Fig. 1 a hand stamp of conventional form having a body 10, to the underside of which is secured the stamp proper 11.
According to the present invention the body has provided therein a groove 12 extending longitudinally the entire length of the body which in transverse section is rec- 30 tangular, or nearly so, to provide side Wall surfaces 13 and a floor surface 14. Extending from said groove into the body walls at opposite sides of the groove are slots 15.
In carrying out the invention, I provide a label consisting of a strip 16 of paper, or an equivalent, shown separately in Fig. 3 upon which is imprinted the name or other This label is of slightly less width than the width of the groove 12 and, in use, is supported upon a strip 17, hereinafter termed the key, which, in turn, is supported upon the floor 14 of the body.
Associated with said label and key is a guard 18. Said guard consists of a strip of transparent celluloid, or the like, which is formed in transverse section substantially as shown in Fig. 2that is to say, with a central plane portion 19 with a flange 20 depending from each side thereof and terminating in outwardly directed rib elements 21. i
The width of the plane portion 20 of the guard is substantially equal to the width of the groove 12 of the stamp body, and the depth of the flanges 20 is such as to the ribs 21 in engageable relation with the slots 15 when the various parts are in the assembled positions in which they are illustrated in Figs. 1 and 7.
In practice, the key thereon and straddled by the guard 18 may be inserted as a unit endwise into the body with short lengths of stamps.
Preferably, however, the guard 18 is first inserted in the body as represented in Fig. 6, and the key 17 with the label thereon are introduced together in the channel below the central portion of the guard.
In operation, the key performs two functionsnamely, retain the guard flanges 20 in their relatively distended positions Whereat the ribs 21 are held in engagement within the slots 15 of the body. The guard being thus interlocked wit-h the body, serves mutually to hold the key in label supporting position beneath the plane portion 19 of the transparent holder 18 for the inspection of the use.
Furthermore, by suitable proportioning the key the securement of the guard is such that none of the parts can be accidentally dislodged.
The key, moreover, positions the guard to have its top surface flush or in the plane with the body surface in proximity of the groove, and thereby retain the label in a position easy to be read.
While I have illustrated and described the invention in its form now preferred by me I do not wish to be understood as confining myself thereto except as limited by the scope of the following claim.
What I claim, is,
A hand stamp having a relatively wide, shallow channel therein, the base thereof be ing at right angles to substantially parallel side walls, slots projecting outwardly from said base, a removable key member adapted for insertion therein in seating engagement to said base and in spaced disposition to present l7 and the label 16 to support the label and to said side walls, and a guard of a transparent material having downturned side flanges terminating in laterally projecting rib elements, said rib elements being adapted to project within said slots and said side flanges being adapted to be compressed in the space afforded between said side walls and key member, said guard providing a space intermediate the underneath surface thereof and the upper face of the key member for inserting a label therein.
Signed at Seattle, Washington, this 3rd day of August, 1928.
CLARENCE L. LARSON.
