This invention relates to anovel household appliance for use in cleaning waste pipes and the like and more particularly to a waste pipe cleaner embodying means for forcing water under pressure through the pipe for freeing the pipe from obstructions, and the like.
One of the primary objects of the present invention is the provision of a waste pipe 1 cleaner embodying a dome for fitting over a waste pipe having a water inlet with novel means for connecting the dome in place against accidental movement.
Another salient feature of the invention is the provision of novel means for connecting the holding hooks of the appliance with the usual waste pipe strainer plate prior to the placing of the dome in position whereby the tightening rod associated with said books can be conveniently inserted through the dome, when the dome is placed over the waste pipe, and thus eliminate all difficulties contingent with the placing of the holding hooks in posit-ion and the connection of the tighten? ing rod with the dome.
A further object of the invention is the provision of a waste pipe cleaner comprising a cross-arm having pivotally connected therewith holding hooks for engaging the strainer plate ofa waste pipe and an adjusting rod carried by the cross-arm for engaging the strainer plate and for holding the cross-arm in an elevated position with the hooks in gripping contact with the strainer plate, whereby the adjusting rod and the books will be rigidly held against movement without the necessity of the holding of the same by hand during the placing of the dome or cap in place over the waste pipe, the adjusting rod being adapted to be placed in an opening in the top of the dome or cap for the reception of an adjusting nut, whereby the dome or cap can be forced into intimate contact with the waste ipe.
5 p A still further object of the invention is to provide a waste pipe cleaner of the above character, which will be durable and efficient in use, one that will be simple and easy to manufacture, and one which can be placed upon the market at a very small cost.

With these and other objects in view, the invention consists in the novel construction, arrangement and formation of parts, as will be hereinafter more specifically described, claimed, and illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which drawing:

Referring to the drawings in detail, wherein similar reference characters designate corresponding parts throughout the several views, the letter A generally indicates the improved waste pipe'cleaner, and B a conventional waste pipe.
In the present illustration, I have shown the waste pipe B as part of the sink C, which is also of a conventional construction. The usual water delivery faucet D is arranged above the sink C.
As is the usual practice, the waste pipe B is provided with a perforated strainer plate 10, which can be of any preferred construction or arrangement.
The improved waste pipe cleaner A comprises a dome or cap 15, which can be constructed of any desired material, either mold-- ed or pressed into shape. This dome or cap is provided with a lower annular side wall 16 and a hollow conical shaped top wall 1 7, the apex portion of which is provided with an opening 18, It is preferred to have the upper end of the conical wall 17 flattened to provide a bearing surface 19, the purpose of which will be later described.
It is to be noted that the lower side wall 16 is of such a size as to entirely surround the waste pipe B. 7
An let nipple O is ormed o d exte laterally from the dome or cap 15 and has its plied to the outer end enlarged and internally threaded to provide a coupling 21 for receiving a companion coupling 22 of a flexible hose 23. This hose 23 is in turn connected by means of a hose coupling 24 with the faucet or water delivery spigot D for a purpose which will also be more fully described. This dome or cap 15 is adapted to be placed directly over the waste pipe B and, in order to establish a water and air-tight seal between the dome and the waste pipe, an annular gasket formed of rubber or other like compressible-material 25, is arranged between the sink and the dome or cap.
As heretobefore stated, one of the salient features of the invention is the novel means provided for holding the dome or cap in po sition over the waste pipe B and this means is so constructed that the ordinary housewife will have no trouble in placing the appliance in position and to make the appliance substantially fool-proof. This holding means comprises a cross-arm 26 having a pair of pivot cars 27 formed on each end thereof and each pair of pivot cars 27 receive between the same the pivot barrels of holding hooks 28 and 29. Each of the holding hooks consists of elongated shank having a bill formed on the lower end thereof and the pivot barrel formed on the upper end thereof. The pivot barrel and pivot ears receive suitable pivot pins for holding the hooks in proper position on the cross-arm. The central portion of the cross-arm 26 is enlarged and provided with a threaded bore for the reception of the adjusting rod 30 which forms an important part of the dome or cap holding means.
The lower end of the adjusting rod 30 carries an enlarged footor head 31 for engaging the central portion of the strainer plate 10. The portion of the rod 30 directly above the foot or head 31 is screw threads 32 whereby the rod can be threadedthrough the cross-arm 26. Above the threads 32, the rod can be left smooth but the upper end of the adjusting rod is also provided with the screw threads 33 for the reception of an adjusting thumb nut 34.
In use of the improved device, the dome or cap 15 is removed from the adjusting rod 30 and the hooks 28 and 29 are placed through the openings of the strainer plate 10. The adjusting rod 30 is now threaded down into tight engagement with the strainer plate which will pull upward on the hooks 28 and 29 so that the bills thereof will engage the lower face of the strainer plate. This will hold the adjusting rod in a vertical position and the hook in engagement with the strainer plate against accidental displacement. The
cap or dome 15 can now be inserted over the adjusting rod 30 in place around the waste pipe B and the gasket 25 is disposed between the dome and the sink. The nut 34 is now apadjusting rod and threaded into provided with external intimate contact with the bearing face 1'9 of the dome and this nut will pull up on the hooks 28 and 29 and urge the dome into intimate contact with the gasket 25 forming a fluid tight joint. By this arrangement, it can be seen that all necessity of holding the hooks 28 and 29 in place by hand and the holding of the adjusting rod in an axially disposed position is eliminated and the dome can be readily slipped over the adjusting rod into its operative position.
