My invention relates to internal combustion engines, in which a means is provided for compensating for the destructive'eflect of the shocks or blows caused by the explosion of the charge acting on the piston of said-em gine.
to provide a novel form of internal combustion engine in which the cylinder thereof is provided with a chamber in which the mixture is adapted to be exploded, the exploded charge being crowded between the top of said piston and the lower part of the valve casing of said engine, preferably in constricted spaces to neutralize or compensate for the destructive eifect of the shocks or blows received by said piston when themixture is exploded.v p
A furtherobjectof my invention is to provide a novel form of cylinder and piston construction adapted to be associated with internalcombustion engines, the cylinder of which has an enlarged chamber in which the mixture is to be exploded; said pistonhaving a projection adapted to extend into the cylinder port so that when said mixture is exploded the charge will be crowded into a smaller but progressively enlarging space to compensate for the destructive shocks or blows produced so by the exploded mixture.
The above and further objects and advantages of my invention as will hereinafter more fully appear, I attain by the structure disclosed in the specification and illustrated on the cation.

The mixture, on the suction stroke of the piston 20, having been drawn into the cham-- ber 10 of the cylinder 2 through the intake port 14 and the cylinder port 24, the valve 18 being properly positioned to provide for the same, said charge is compressed in the chamber 10 by the compression stroke of the pieton, said charge being confined within the larger space in said chamber, after which said char e is i ted by the lug 12. v
As will lfilear, the eifect of the explosion is not directly communicated to the, fluid effective end of the piston 20, but on the contrary is crowded in between the smaller space between said iston, the part 6 of'the valve casing and" in t e clearance spaces between theprojection 22 and the valve 18-as said projection is positioned in the cylinder ort 24, forming a set of constricted aces are prpgressively enlarged as e charge expl es, thus neutralizing or compensating for the destructive shocks or blows of the explosion reducing their eifect to a minimum.
' While-I have thus described my invention with great particularit it will be clear that a the same may be modi ed throughout a wide range. I accordingly do not propose to be limited to the exact details of construction described and claimed but reservethe right 7 in practice to make any and all modifications I that fall within the scope of the appended claims.
I claim as my invention:
1. In an internal combustion engine in cluding a cylinder, a piston operable therein,
and a valve casing, of a chamber formed by said valve casing and an enlarged portion on said cylinder, said chamber being adapted to receive the explosive charge introduced therein and coact with said piston to constrict the exploded charge so that the shock of its explosive force will be compensated.
' 2. In an internal combustion engine in cluding a cylinder, a piston operable therein,
' and a'valve casing, of a chamber formed by said valve casing and an enlarged portion of said cylinder, said valve casing being provided with a port, ignition means associated with said chamber, and means associated with said piston and adapted to be projected into said port, whereby, when the mixture introduced in said chamber is ignited, the exploded mixture will be crowded into clearance spaces above said iston, to compensate for the shock of said exp osion.
' '3. In an internal combustion engine ineluding a cylinder, a piston operable therein, a ported valve casing associated with said cylinder, a valve in said valve casing, of means associated-with said cylinder and said valve casin adapted to coact with said piston, said Va ve, and said valve casing, whereby the exploded mixture will be confined in clearance spaces so that the force of said exploded mixture will be compensated.
