Extending from diametrically opposite sides of therestricted portion 3, approximately midway its ends are studs 4 which are formed with one flat beveled side wall- 5 while the remaining walls are also beveled at 6, and the studs are also tapered to a rounded end 7 as suggested in Figure 2 of the drawings.=- The necks 8 of the wooden heads 9 are each provided with a ferrule 10, but in formin the iron heads, the necks 11 thereof are ormed'each with a socket, and in any own.

event the ferrules 10 or sockets are each prov1ded wlth bayonet slots 12 diametrically arranged therein as suggested inFigure 4, and these bayonet slots are formed with beveled walls 13 to accommodate the studs 5 and the inner ends of the horizontal ortions 14 of the slots are reduced and roun ed so as to conform to the rounded ends 7 of the studs.

As shown in the drawings, the horizontal portions 14 of the bayonet slots 12 extend toward the right for providing a club for right handed players, but of course the horizontal portions 14 should extend toward the left in clubs for left handed players, as this construction will prevent the studs from becoming loose or being casually removed from the slots as will be readily apparent.

To provide different length clubs, the necks of the clubs are to be constructed of different lengths, for example a putter will have a short neck, and the necks of. the other clubs will be made of a length to correspond to the club for the particular purpose for which it is intended. The recess 15 of the ferrule 10 for thewooden clubs receives the depending portion 3 which terminatesabove the bottom thereof as shown in Figure 3 and a coil spring 16 having a. small; convolution 17 'on its lower end is arranged in this recess 15. A screw bolt 18 passes through the small convolution for securing the spring to the bottom wall of the recess. A follower 19 is arranged on the top convolution of thespring between the same and the long end of the portion 3. The ferrule 10 is also provided with a recess 20 to ac-- commodate the reduced end ofthe necks of the wooden heads.

The spring 16 will of course be secured to the bottom wall of the sockets of the necks of the iron heads and a follower will also be employed as will be readily'apparent.

From the above description and disclosure of the drawings, it will be obvious that this invention provides a golf club which has detachable heads secured to the shaft in such a manner whereby a shock caused by hitting a golf ball will result in causing the parts It is thought from the foregoing description that the advantages and novel features ofmy invention will be readily apparent.

I desire it to be understood that I may make changes in the construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts, provided that such changes fall within the scope of the appended claims.

\Vhat I claim is:

1. A golf club of the character described com rising a shaft, a sleeve secured to said sha t, a depending portion secured to said sleeve, studs extending from diametrically opposite sides of said depending portion and being provided with beveled walls, a head, and means on said head formed with bayonet slots having beveled Walls to accommodate the walls of the stud whereby the head is detachably associated with the shaft.

2. A olf club of the character described comprising a shaft, a sleeve secured to said shaft, a restricted portion de ending from said sleeve, studs having beve ed walls and being tapered toward one end, said studs projecting from diametrically opposite sides of the restricted portion, a head, a neck formed on said head, a ferrule secured to said neck and bein provided with a recess to accommodate tie restricted depending portion, bayonet slots formed in said ferrule to receive the studs and having beveled walls I and restricted ends to accommodate the walls of the studs and ends thereof for the purpose specified.

3. A golf club of the character described comprising a shaft, a sleeve secured to said shaft, a restricted portion centrally depending from said sleeve, studs extending from diametrically opposite sides of said restricted portion and having beveled walls tapered toward one end, a club head, a neck formed on said head, a ferrule secured to said neck and being provided with a recess to acconnnodate the restricted depending portion, a bayonet slot formed in said ferrule to accommodate the studs, a follower, resilient means for forcing the follower in contacting engagement with the bottom of the depending portion and being secured to the bottom of the recess.
