Application filed November This invention relates to baggage containers and more particularly to suit cases and bags of the Gladstone type, capable of being fully opened lengthwise'and presenting two or more flat compartments, the full size of the bag, seperated bya leaf-like partition hinged to fold ineither direction over one or the other of the compartments.

While such bags have many advantages that appeal to the traveling public andvare easily packed on one side, during which the partition is folded over the other, empty side, it is not so convenient to pack the unfilled side, due to interference of the partition, such interference and difiiculty increasing in proportion to the volume or height of the goods disposed in the filled compartment and which prevent the partition from assuming an unobstructive position. It is therefore oneof the principal objects of this invention to provide a partition which, although hinged to be swung from side to side-when theibag is open, isreadily removed or replaced at will, permitting both sides of the bag to be packed with equal facility. i

It is a further feature to provide a reenforced and materially strengthened partition and bag structure without noticeable increase of weight.

Another aim is in the provision of a simple and inexpensive device whereby the utility and convenience of a bag is enhanced and its appearance improved.

- These objects are attained by the novel construction and arrangement of parts hereinafter described and shown in the accompanying drawings, forming a material part of this disclosure, and in which Figure '1 is a perspective view of a conventional type of Gladstone bag, shown in an open position and illustrating an appllcation of the invention.

The compartments are provided with handles 12 on their outer walls, straps 13 extending across the long side edges, and ledges 14 fixed 011 ,the short side walls near the top thereof. V Secured along the connecting edges of the compartments 10 and 11 is a rail-plate 15 to which is fixed, near its endsalpair of gudgeons or sockets 16 and 17 i I The socket 16 is sheared and inbent near its outerend to present a stop 18 against which one end of a rod 19 abuts, while the socket 17 contains a counter bore 20 to present a shoulder 21, the main bore receiving the free end of the rod 19. v

The movement of the rod is normally re strained by a stop 22, fitting the bore 20, having a collar abuttingthe shoulder 21, pressed by a coiled spring'24, the outer end of which contacts a plug25 fixed in the gudgeon. 1 Fixed on the rod 19 intermediate the sockets 16 and 17, is a channel member 26 V Figures 4 to 8 inclusive illustrate a modifii cation in which the channel member 26 has fixed therein at 35 a rod 36 one end thereof being mounted in a socket 37, carried on the rail 15.

The inner end of the rod abuts a coiled spring 38 contacting the inner end of a eating the manner of attaching or disengagremoved from the shorter rod 39 provided with a reduced intermediate portion 40, the channel being provided with an indentation or stop 41 so that the rod 39 may be limitedly slidable.

Fast on the rod 39 near its outer end is a collar 42 normally abutting a socket 43 also on the rail 15 in which is set the end of the rod.

Thus, the channel is normally held in position by the expanding action of the spring 38 on the rod 39.

To remove the partition 28, the same is moved in the direction of the arrow in Figure 7 causing the rod 39 to slide telescopical- 1 into the channel until the rod 36 may be isengaged from the socket 37 as will be readily understood.

Thus, it may be seen that the bag is easily packed without the interference of the partition when the same is removed as above described.

\Vhile certain preferred embodiments of this device have been shown and described, it will be understood that changes in the form, arrangements, proportions, sizes and details thereof may be made without departing from the scope of the invention as defined in the appended claims.

Having thus described my invention, What I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent,'is:-

1. In a fiat opening compartmented bag, a rigid plate partition foldable over either compartment, a metal channel fixed on the inner edge of said partition, 3. rod held rigidly in said channel to extend therebeyond, sockets fixed on said bag to receive the rod ends, and means combined with said sockets to normally retain the rod ends therein, said means being yieldahle longitudinally to permit removal of the rod and partition.

2. In combination with a flat opening bag having equal full size cmnpartments and a metal strip extending lengthwise at the adjacent edges of the compartments, of a stiff partition leaf, a channel engaging the inner edge thereof, a hinge rod fixed in said channel to extend beyond its ends, and sockets fixed on said strip, one to receive one end of said rod, the other containing a spring and plunger against which the other end of said rod abuts, said plunger yielding upon pressing the rod inwardly in removing or engaging said leaf by actuation thereof.

In combination with a flat opening bag having equal full size con'lpartmcnts and a metal strip extending lengthwise at the adjae-ent edges of the compartments, of a stiff partition leaf, a channel engaging the inner edge thereof, a hinge rod fixed in said channel to extend beyond at one end thereof. a socket on said strip to engage therewith, a rod slidable in the other end of said channel, a spring in said channel to press the last named rod outwardly, a stop limiting the outward movement of the rod, and a socket receptive of the outer end of said rod.
