Be it known that I, .VALTER H. SMITH, a subject of the King of Great Britain, residing at Pittsburgh, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented new and useful Improvements in ThrowOut Devices, of which the following a specification.
My invention pertains to throw-out devices for printing presses, that is to say to mechanisms for automatically causing the elements of the printing couple to be thrown out of operativ relation when a sheet is not fed to the impression element of such couple.
It is an object of my invention to pnride on automatic throw-out device which will be an advance over such devices as heretofore proposed in providing an improved certainty of action. Another object of my invention lies in the production of a throw-out device which will be of an especially simple construction and easy to maintain by mechanically unskilled operators. It is another object of my invention to provide a throw-out device of such a aturc that it may be applied to existing as of pr ss without material modification of the latter, and without interference with the usual hand or foot operated devi for throwing off the impression. And other and further objects of my invention will appear from the following description taken in connection with the claims annexed thereto. p
By way of example, I have described in the following specification, and shown in the accompanying drawings, an embodiment of my invention as applied to a well known type of cylinder press and as associated with a press feeding device such as is disclosed in my co-pending application Se. No. 460,243, filed April 11, 1921. I wish specially understood, however, that my invention can be embodied in other forms, and employed inother relations, and that changes may be 'made in the particular fornrherein described and shown, without exceeding the scope thereof, as defined in the appended claims.

In such a press, it'is common to provide a foot lever 12, having a treadle 13, by the operation of which the bed and impression cylinderare thrown out of cooperative relation whenever the operator desiresto throw off the impression. By the mechanism hereinafter to be described, thisfoot lever 12 is actuated automatically whenever a sheet is not fed into position to be received by the cylinder 11.
The press is illustrated as equipped with a feed device of the kind disclosed in my co-pending application above referred to,-
such feed device including a framework 14 carrying a transverse shaft 15, driven from the press. The feed device also includes a feed-board 16 which terminates in a feedplate 17, and has secured thereto a pair of tracks 18. On the forward ends of the tracks 18 are mounted bearing brackets 19 which carry a transverse rod 20 extending across the feed-plate l7 somewhat to. the

The device for locking the shaft 39 against movement when a sheet is not in position to be received bythe lLHPEQSSlOH member, includes a member 46 (Figs, 24 secured uponthe rod 20 and having" extending rearwardly therefrom an arm 47 which provides a bearing for the rock shaft Upon the rock shaft 39 is secured a hooklever having, at its end, a transversely extending hook projection 4-9, which extends over shoulder 50 formed on the member 46, and beneath an abutment 5i, vhich e; tends forwardly from such member. and thus rock the shaft '39, at a time when a sheet ought to be in place on the feedplate 17, ready to be received by the impression cylinder. If a sheet is thus in place, the teeler-arm 53 will be in the position shown in Fig. 4, and there will be no impediment to the shaft 39 being rocked. Such rocking movement of the shaft 39 will shift the feeler-arm 53 and feeler-finger into the position shown in dotted lines in 4, thus removing any resistance to movement of the sheet, such, for instance, as might be desired 'for registering. If, however, a sheet should'not be present on the feet-plate 1", the feeler-finger will drop into the slot 56 and the feeler-arm will fall forward into the position shown in Figs. 3 and 5, with its hook 54c beneath the hook projection 49 of the hook lever 48. .lnder these conditions, the engagement of the hook projection 49 against the hook 554 prevents any rocking movement of the shaft 39, the effect being that the stop bar 28 is forced into the lower plane of movement wherein its shoulder 4O engages the lug 41, and the throw-out foot lever 12 is actuated, as above explained.
An advantage of the device lies in its eX- ireme simplicity and in its certainty of oper ation. Another advantage is that the mechanism does not in any way interfere with the ordinary actuation of the lever 12 by the foot treadle 13. It is to be noted, further, that no removal of fiarts is needed to enable tie iront part of the feed-board 16 to be swung upward to give access to the press cyl inner, the roll 36 then leaving the stop bar Ti'ith the front part of the feed board thus swung upward, the automatic throvv-.
out novice will be ineffective, the lever 12, however, being operable by the foot as usual.
Having thus fully described my said invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
i. In a sheetcontrolled throw-out device, an element movable as a whole and having a portion adapted to move in another direc .5011 when movement of said element is prevented, a throw-out actuating member connected with said portion, an abutment normally out of the path of said element, means for moving said element, and sheet-controlled mcans either permitting normal iovement of said element or causing it to move in a path wherein it will engage said abutment.
2. In a sheet-controlled throw-out device, a pair of toggle links normally movable together, a throw-out actuating member .0011- net-ted with said links so as to be moved when one of said links moves relatively to the other, means for moving one of said links, and sheet-controlled means permitting or preventing movement of the other link.
3. In a sheet-controlled throw-out device,
a pair of toggle links normally movable together, a throw-out actuating member con nected with said linksso as to be moved when said links move relatively to each other, means for moving one of said links, an abut-- ment normally out of the path of the other link, and sheet-controlled means either permitting'normal movement of said other link or causing said other link to move in a path wherein it will engage said abutment.
5. In a sheet-controlled throw-out device, an element including a pair of connected members and resilient means normally main-' taining said members in fixed relation with each other so as to move together, a throwout actuating m mber connected with said element so as to be moved when the members of the latter move relatively to each other, moving means connected to one side of said. element, an abutment at the other side of said element and normally out of the path thereof, and sheet-controlled means either permitting normal movement of said element or causing it to move in a path. wherein it will engage said abutment.

In a throw-out device for printing presses, an abutment, a movable slide, a resilient support normally guiding said slide in a path to clear said abutment, a throw-out actuating member governed in its operation by the engagement or non-engagement of said slide with said abutment, and sheetcontrolled means either permitting normal movement of'said slide or moving said support so as to cause said slide to move in a path in which it will engage said abutment.
8. In a throw-out device for printing presses, an abutment, a movable slide, a resilient support normally guiding said slide in a path in which it will clear said abut- .ment, 2. throw-out actuating member associated with said slide and operated when said slide engages said abutment, and sheetcontrolled means for moving said support, to cause said slide to move in a path in which it will engage said abutment, when a sheet is not fed to the press.
9. In a throwout device, an abutment, a movable slide having a cam projection thereon, resilient means for guiding said slide in a path in which it will clear said abutment, a member disposed in the path of said cam projection and adapted, when held stationary, to force said slide downward so to engage said abutment, a throwout actuating member governed in its operation by the engagement or non-engagement of said slide with said abutment, and sheet-controlled means either permitting movement of said first-named member or holding it stationary.
10. In a throw-out device for printing ZlG-SSQS, an abutment, a movable slide having a cam projection thereon, resilient means for guiding said slide in a path in which it will clear said abntm at, a normally movable member disposed in the path of said cam projection and adapted, when held stationary, to move said slide into a path in which it will engage said abutment, a throw-out actuating member associated with said slide and operated when said slide engages said abutment, and sheet-controlled means for preventing movement of said first-named member when a sheet is not fed to the press; 1

movable slide having a cam projection thereon, means normally guiding saidslide in a path to clear said abutment, a fixed jaw, a movable jaw, a member disposed in the path of said cam projection for operating said movable jaw and for varying the path of said slide, to cause the latter to ensaid abutment, when said movable jaw cannot be operated, a sheet feeler having a portion adapted to enter between said jaws in the absence of a sheet, thereby to prevent operation of said movable aw, and a throwont actuating; member operated when said slide or gages said abutment.
