WATERPROOF CIGARETTE CONTAINER.
Application filed August 29, 1923. Serial No. 659,861.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HARRY KISTER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Waterproof Cigarette Containers, whereof the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
It is the object of my invention to provide a container which may be conveniently carried by a person clad in a bathing suit and which may be worn in salt water without corrosion, and which displays its contents so that the latter may be seen without openin the container. As hereinafter described, my invention includes a container comprising a phial of transparent glass horizontally wider one way than the other and curved to fit the chest of the wearer and provided with a lid of the same material; said phial having means arranged to pivotally connect it with a necklace so that it may hang from the neck of the wearer as a pendant, and also having means to securely detain said lid in closed, but readily removable, position; said lid having a flange arranged to extend downwardly into the phial and carrying a resilient rubber gasket adapted to seal the joint between the phial and the lid. Such supporting and connecting means includes a band, conveniently formed of metallic wire, extending around said phial and having, at the opposite narrow sides of the latter, eyes for pivotal engagement with the ends of a necklace and having, at the opposite wider sides of the phial, and near the narow sides thereof, two pairs of eyes, each pair adapted to pivotally engage a swing bail respectively adapted to detachably engage the opposite ends of said lid; the latter having respective cam inclines with detent notches at the top thereof adapted to detachably detain the respective bails with the lid in closed postion.
My invention includes the various novel features of construction and arrangement hereinafter more definitely specified.
In said drawings; Fig. I is a front elevation of a necklace and a pendant phial and its appurtenances embodying my invention.
Fig. II is a plan view of said phial showing the relative position of the six pivot eyes with which it is provided.
Fig. III is a plan view of a modified form of annular band for the phial.
In said figures; the container includes the transparent glass phial 1 horizontally wider one way than the other, and having its opposite wider walls 2 and 3 cylindrically curved respectively inward and outward, as indicated in Fig. II, to fit the chest of the wearer, and having its opposite narrower vertical walls a and 5 both cylindrically curved outward; all corners of said phial being rounded as indicated. The. phial lid ('3 is also conveniently formed of transparent glass and has the annular flange 7 fitted to extend downwardly within said phial and carrying the resilient soft rubber gasket 8 adapted to seal the joint between said phial and lid.
Said phial 1 has transverse ribs 9 and 10 projecting from its respectively opposite wider walls 2 and 3, at the top thereof, forming a seat for said gasket of greater extent than the thickness of said phial walls and also serving to retain the annular band 12 which is conveniently formed of wire encircling said phial and forming six pivot eyes. Said pivot eyes include two lace eyes 1% and 15 respectively at the opposite narrower sides of said phial, and four bail eyes; two, 16 and 17 adjoining the narrow wall 4 and two, 18 and 19, adjoining the narrow wall 5. Said lace eyes 1% and 15 are respectively pivotally connected with the opposite end bights 20 and 21 of the necklace 22 which may be a flexible connector of any kind, conveniently an elastic fabric. Said bail eyes 16 and 17 pivotally engage the opposite end loops at and 25 of the swing bail 26. Said bail eyes 18 and 19 respectively engage the opposite end loops 28 and of the similar swing bail 30. Said bails 26 and 80 are so proportioned and arranged that they fit as closely to the container as may be with freedom to oscillate over their respective ends of said lid 6; the bights 31 and 32 of said bails being adapted to ride upon the curved cam inclines 34 and 35 of said lid so as to draw the latter down upon the gasket 8 to compress the latter, until the bails are engaged in the respective bail notches 36 and 87 in said lid cams in which they are normally detained against acci dental displacement by the pressure of said gasket 8.
Although I have found it convenient to make the annular bands with the six eyes aforesaid of wire; I find that such construction of corrosion resisting metal is more costly than if said bands be made of celluloid or any suitable material which may be formed in one piece as indicated in Fig. III, An advantage of such a celluloid band is that it may be formed with an opening slightly smaller than the horizontal dimensions of the phial which it is toencircle and be expanded by immersion in hot water until it will slip over th phial. IVhereupon, upon cooling to atmospherictemperature; it will grip the phial so that it cannot .be accidentially displaced.
It may be observed that in each form of my invention above described, the phial is provided with means affording a plurality of pivot recesses; certain ol i which afford means for connecting bails with thephialto engage the lid, and it is to be understood that I do not desire to limit' my claims toany specific material for forming such recesses. v
Although I prefer to make both thephial and lid of transparent glass; it is to be understood that they may, be made of other material and, although I have found it convenient to make the container of the propor-i cluding a substantially flat transparent glass.
phial, a transparent glass lid, for said phial, having an annular flange fitted to said phial; a resilient gasket, carried by said lid and adapted to seal the joint between said phial and lid; outwardly extendingmeans at the top o f said phial forming a seat-foren circling said gasket; an annular band, said phial beneath and retained by said seat forming means, and having six pivot: eyes, including two lace eyes and fourvbail eyes; a necklace pivo-tally connected with said lace eyes; two swing bails respectively having end loops engaging said bail eyes, and arranged to swing over said lid; andiseparate bail notches 011 said lid arranged to receive and detain the respective bails when said gasket is compressed to seal the joint between said phial and lid.
ranged to be Worn as a necklace pendant; including a. substantially fiat transparent glass phial; a transparent glass lid, for said phial, havingv an annular flange fitted to said phial; a-resilient gasket, carried by said lid and adapted to seal the joint between said phial and lid; outwardly extending means at the top of said phial forming a seatfor said gasket; means affording a plurality of pivot recesses on said phial; a necklace piv-- otally connectedc'with twoofsaid recesses; and two swing bails each respectively connected withother of said recesses.
3. A water-proofcigarette container, ar-' ranged to be worn as a necklace pendant; including a substantially flat transparent glass phial; a'transp-arent glass lid, for said phial,:having an annular flange fitted'to said'phial aresilient gasket, carried by said lid and adapted tovseal the joint'between said, phial. and lid; outwardly extending means at the top of said phial forming a vseat for said gasket;
beneath said seat forming means, .afi'ording four pivot recesses arranged in pairs upon opposite sides of said phial adjacent the opposite edges thereof; two swing bails each 7 said plv'ot over said having means engaging two of recesses, and arranged to swing lid; and meanson said lid including caminclines at opposite ends thereof, spective bail notches adapted to receive and detain the respective bails when said the joint between said phial and lid.
In testimony whereof, I have hereunto signed my name at Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, this twenty-seventh day of August,
1923., a 7 *HARRY KISTER. lVitnesses: v e
