certain new and useful Improvements in Wrenches, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates broadly to adjustable wrenches, and more specifically to a wrench of the well known type in which one jaw, formed integral with and disposed at substantially a right angle to a toothed rack bar, is adjustable relative to the other jaw by rotation of a knurled worm disposed in cooperative relation to said rack bar.
The primary object of the invention is to provide a wrench of the type mentioned which has a construction adapting it for use in the manner of a ratchet wrenchthat is to say, which may be rotated or swung rearward for obtaining a new hold, following forward movement, without wholly withdrawing or disengaging its jaws from the nut or other object upon which it operates.
A further object is to provide a wrench of the character referred to which firmly grips the engaged nut during forward, or advancing, movement of the latter, and which, when moved rearward, automatically releases the nut to the extent that its jaws freely ride over the latter.
With these and other objects in view, the invention resides in the features of construction which will hereinafter be fully described, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which 7 Figure 1 is a side elevation of a wrench embodying the invention; and
Figure 2 is a fragmentary detail section of the same.
Referring to said drawings, 1 indicates generally a head portion, 2 an integral shank or handle, 3 an adjustable jaw, 4: a rack bar formed integral with and disposed at substantially a right angle to said jaw 3, 5 a transverse passageway in said head and in which said rack bar is longitudinally movable for positioning said jaw 3, and 6 a knurled worm operatively engaged with said rack bar, all of said parts, excepting said jaw 3, being of the usual forms and constituting parts of an adjustable wrench of a common type.
Disposed in opposing relation to the adjustable jaw 3 is a jaw 7 which is shiftablc relative to said jaw 3,'having anintegrai rearwardly extending tongue 8 which is mounted for sliding movement in a channel or chamber 9 provided therefor in the wrench head 1, said chamber as herein shown being disposed in a common plane with the passageway 5 and joining the inner end of the latter, 7 I
The tongue 8 carries on its rear end an integral rearwardly and inwardly inclined arm or shank 10 which is slidably received within a correspondingly inclined socket 11 provided therefor in thelwrench head 1. A slot 12 inclined so as to lie substantially parallel to the plane of the axis of said shank 10 is provided in the tongue 8, and extending through said slot is a pin'13 which has its opposite ends mounted in the opposite walls of the head adjacent to the outer or forward end of said chamber 9,, as shown, The shank 10 and the pin 13 cooperate, re spectively, with the socket 11 and the slot 12 for guiding movements of the jaw 7 as the latter is shifted to and from cooperative nut-gripping relation to the adjustable jaw 3.
In practice, having first positioned the jaw 7 in its retracted operative position shown in full lines in Figs. 1 and 2, the jaw 8 is adjusted relative thereto by rotation of the worm 6 for fitting said jaws to the nut or other object which is to be rotated by means of the wrench. The wrench is then applied to the nut in such position that rotating movement of the wrench in the direction indicated by the arrow in Fig.
, 1 will efiect turning of the nut in the desired direction. Rearward or return movement of the wrench without disengaging the latter from the rut acts through the nut to slide the jaw outward with respect to the wrench head 1 and away from the jaw 3, as indicated in broken lines in Fig. 1, the jawseparation being due to the inclination of the direction of movement with respect to the a relatively larger transverse bore or passage 15 provided in the adjustable jaw -'3 real.- ward of the nut engaging face of the latter. will be obvious that various minor changes in the forms of some of the parts of the wrench described maybe made without departure :tro nthe spirit or'scop e of t e n nt e a d fin d n 1 1 appende l ms What is claimed is-- l. A wrench comprising a head portion a t ans e s r essw y' h f ia a having an i t g al r cka di po e a P s es way, a n w e a e ith s ram-bar and rotatable to effect adjustment of the position oi said jawyand 'a jaw carried by saidhead in opposing relation to said adjustable aw and slidable to and from cooperative relation'to the latter in a direction' inclined relative to the plane of its nut-engaging face. i
2. A wrench comprising a head portion having a transverse passageway therein, a jaw having an integral rack-bar disposed in said passageway, a worm engaged with said rackJoa'r and rotatableto effect-adjustment of the position of said jaw, and a second. jaw carried by said head "portion and slidable to and from cooperative nut-engaging relation to sail adjustable jaw, said second jaw being adapted to finain stationary in said relation when the rench is rotated in one directioniand to slide'to nut-releasing position when reverse rotation is imp'ai ted'to said wrench.
