Description

UNITE STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM P. WOOD, OF WASHINGTON, DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA, ASSIGNOR TO SAML. DEV
VAUGHAN AND WM. P. WOOD, OF WASHINGTON, DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA.
MITER-B OX.
Specification of Letters Patent No. 15,058, dated June 3, 1856.
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM P. Woon, of the city of Vashington, in the District of Columbia, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Miter-Boxes, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings of the same, making part of this specification, in which- Figure l represents a plan of my improved miter box showing the arms extended for the purpose of cutting a square joint. Fig. 2 represents a similar view but showing the arms in position to cut the joints of a polygonal figure. Fig. 3 represents a section of the same taken through the line X X of Fig. 2. Fig. 4L represents a rear view of Fig. 2; and Fig. 5 a section taken through the line X X of Fig. l.
The object of my invention is to provide a cheap mitering boX that would not be liable to get out of order, by which joints of any angle may be cut and smoothed, by a simple adjustment of its arms; and it consists in so mounting two arms upon a common center, that when operated upon by a sliding carriage or its equivalent working in a radial slot or guide way, each arm shall be caused to approach or recede from the guide an equal distance as the carriage is moved toward or from the center of the circle of which the arms form radii, so that no matter in what direction they may be moved, both arms shall describe the same angle to a diameter (or parallel line therewit-h) of the circle, when the slot or carriage way is at right angles thereto, they being secured at any required point by means of a set screw and clamp plate or other equivalent device.
T o enable those skilled in the art to make construct and use my invention, I will now proceed to describe my improvements in detail.
A represents the frame upon which is secured the bed plate or graduated table (B) through which and the longitudinal center of the diametrical front rail of the frame is passed a stud (a), upon which is mounted the two radial arms (C) connected together by means of a hinge joint (b) these arms forming radii of the circle of which the front rail is a diameter or a line parallel therewith, and to which the slot (c) is at right angles and in a radial line rom the stud (a) as a center. The slot forming a guide-way for a sliding carriage (D) having two arms (CZ) projecting on either side, and of equal length, on the end of which are secured two pins (e) that travel in grooves cut on the under side of the arms (C). Through the carriage (D) and small clamp plate l on the under Side of the guide-way is passed a set screw (g) by which the arms (C) are secured to the table (B) at any required point. Upon the face of this table is cut a series of radial lines having the proper number opposite each, by which the boX may be instantly adjusted by the workman to cut a joint of any angle, by simply moving the sliding carriage toward or from the center unt-il the arms are parallel with the proper lines to cut the required joint, at which point they are secured by the set screw (g). In order to confine the arms (C) loosely upon the table, circular slots (g) are cut in t-he latter from the stud (a) as a center through which are passed set screws (it) into the arms (C) by which they can be tightened to any degree; or the ends of the arms of the sliding carriage may be of a T shape and slide in corresponding grooves in the arms (C) for the same purpose.
Having thus fully described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is- The arms (C) when operated in the manner substantially as and for the purposes described.
In testimony whereof I hereunto set my hand in presence of two subscribing witnesses.
WILLIAM P. WOOD.
