Description

June 15 1926.
J. v. PALMER NECKTIE Filed June 30, 192E:
gmntp z J- 171- Panzer.
Patented June 15, 19 26 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFER.
JOHN V. PALMER, OF PITTSBURGH, IENNSYLVANIA.
NECKTIE.
Application filed June 30, 1925. Serial No. 40,567.
This invention relates to neckties and one,
at the front. After a collar has been worn for some time, the buttonholes at the front are liable to become enlarged so that the collar does notclose properly and when a soft collar is worn it is usually necessary to connect the outer folds witha pin so that the.
folds will be held close togetherto present a neat appearance. ,When,-however, this improved necktie is in use, the alastic strip panying drawing, whereincarried thereby will serve to draw the sideportions of the collar or outer folds of the side portions towards each other and keep the collar tightly closed at the front.
This invention is' illustrated in the accom- Figure 1 is 'a view showing the improved necktie applied to' a collar, the outer folds of the collar being partially broken away;
Fig. 2 is a view similar to Fig. 1 but showing the necktie used in connection with a I soft collar instead of ast-ifl collar;
Fig. 3 is a perspective view showing the necktie before it is formed into a four-inhand knot, and
Fig. 4 is a perspective view showing a made-up bow tie provided with the elastic attaching strip. i :1
In the form shown in Figs. 1, 2 and 3, the f v the made-up type by sewing it upon the invention has been shown applied to a fourin-hand tie. The tie l which is of the ordi;
nary four-in-hand type is doubled intermediate its length and the portion which ordinarily passes around the collar cut off. The
end portions from which the four-in-hand knot is to be made are .then sewed together at their'upperends and .provide depending inner and outer tie portions. The elastic" strip 2 extends between the end portions of the tie and is secured by stitches 3 to the inner tie portion at the upper end thereof so that it isfirmly held in engagement with the tie. This strip 2 extends transversely of "the tie with itsend portions eiitendin from the sides of-the tie. Buttonholes l which are preferably rou'nd are formed in the extended ends of the strip 2 and since the strip'is' formed of elastic material it will be seen that the heads of the buttons 5 can be readily forced through these openings.-
Thetie may be used in connection with a stiff collar, such as shown in Fig. 1 and inouter end dicated by the numeral 6, or may be used in connection with a. soft collar, such as' shown in Fig. 2 and indicated by the numeral 7.. The stiffcollar. 6 has, its inner fold provided with the usual button-receiv ing openings at the back and at the front and in addition is provided with buttonholes 8 which are spaced from'the front of the collar. When the collar is fastened about theheckband of a shirt, the buttonholes 8 are normally spaced from each other a distance greater than the distance-between the buttonholes 4 of the necktie-securing strip 2. Therefore, inorder to pass the heads of the buttons, which are inserted in the button holes 8 through the bfittonholes 4 of. the strip 2, it is necessary to stretch this attaching strip. It will, therefore, be seen that, when the attaching strip is engaged with the buttons, a pulling action will be exerted upon the buttons which will tend to draw the ends of the collar towards each other and retain.
the collar in a closed position at the front.
After the strip 2 is engaged with the buttons, the-tie-can 'be formed into a four-in-hand knot in' the usual manner by wrapping the portion about the inner end portion and then passing the outer end portion upwardly and forwardly over the strip 2 and downwardly through the loop formed. The
necktie will then have the appearance shown in Figs. -1 and 2. It will be obvious that the strip 2 may be applied to a fourin-hand of rear or inner face of the knot portion after v the tie has been made. The tie may be applied to a soft collar as well as to a stilf collar but when applied to a soft collar the buttons are first assed through the buttonholes of the strip 2 and then outwardly through buttonholes formed in the outer fold of the soft collar. When so applied, the stretched attaching strip will exert a pulling action which will tend to draw the ends of the outer folds of the collar towards each other and hold them in pro er relation to the tie, as shown in Fig.2. f course, if so desired, the inner fold of the soft collar Fig. 4 is of a conventional construction and the attaching strip 2, when used in connection with this form of tie, is disposed at the rear of the tie and secured in the loop 10 at the center of the knot.. The strip 2 shown in Fig. 4 is of such length that it terminates 1n spaced relation to the ends of the tie. Therefore, when applied to a collar, the strip will not show. There has, therefore,. been provided a necktie and attachingl meanswhich will serve to securely hold tie in place 'upon a collar and also serve to keep the collar in proper shape.
Having thus escribed claim: i
A necktie comprising astrip of fabric .material extendin the invention, I
folded intermediate its length to provide in ner and outer depending portions adapted to v knot, and a strip of elastic p transversely of the tie 1 strip between the epending inner and outer thereof and having its intermediate '0' be formed into a portions portion secured to said inner portion at the upper end thereof and its free end portions extended from the tie strip and provided with fastener receiving openings.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature;
JOHN v. PALMER 1,. 8.]
