J. v. T. EAST GOLF CLUB- Filed June 1925 lnveni'ar:
James V'Z'Eaaj;
kwzsaum Afi yaz Patented Jan. 26, 1926.
UNITED STATES JAMES VICTOR THOMAS EAST, OF LONGMEADOW, MASSACHUSETTS, ASSIGNOR TO- PATENT OFFICE.
- A. c. SPALDING & Enos, OF NEW YORK, N. Y., CORPOR T ON OF NEW JERSEY.
GOLF CLUB.-
Application filed'J'une 22, 1925. serial in. 38,834.-
T all whom it may concern:
Be it' known that Y I, JAMEs Vrc'ron THOMAS EAST, a subject ofthe King of Great Britain, and a resident of Longmeadow, in the county of Hampden and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Golf Clubs, of which the following is a specificati0n.|
The invention relates to a golf club having an insert in its striking face and it concerns particularly the structure of said insert and the means by which it is united with the club.
The invention consists in the features and combination and arrangement of parts here inafter described and particularly pointed out in the claims.
9 In the accompanying drawings c I Fig. 1 is'a view of a golf club with the foundation member of the insert or facing in place.-
Fig. 2' is a perspective view of the'outer member of the insert or facing piece.
Fig. 3 is a sectional view transversely of the club head.
In these drawings 1 indicates the club headi having a recess 2 in which the insert or facing piece is to be located.
The recess is located in the striking face of the club so that the insert member fixed therein-will receive the impact in striking the ball. 4
The insert piece is made up of a foundation member 3 which is secured in the recess by screws, pins or pegs represented at 3. These extend through the foundation member into the wooden head. After the foundation member is secured in place the outside member 4 of the insert piece is applied to the face of the foundation member.
This foundation member is composed of celluloid compound or material of the pyroxylin class, and the facing member is made of the same material. In uniting the outer member with the foundation member of the 1nsert the outer face of the foundation member and the back face of the outer member are prepared by applying a suitable solvent to the securing means or screws being in-efi'ect embedded in the striking member with av substantial layer or portion of the material of the insert coveringthe said screws and protecting them and also preventing con tact of the ball" therewith.
Furthermore, the forceof the blow of the ball is distributed throughout the superposedlayers of the insertpiec'e instead of unbroken outer face for striking the ball,
being localized upon one of the screws or pegs as would be the case if the peg or screw were exposed at the striking. face.
The insert piece may be provided with a decorative member as for instance the star-'5.
This is inserted in the outer or covering member 4 of the insert or striking piece. In applying thls decorative member the piece 4. is' stamped out to the shape necessary to receive the decorative piece. The member 4 is then immersed in hot water to warm and expand it. It is then dried and while still warm cement is applied to the edges of the opening and the'decorative member is thenpressedinto the opening of the member {i and the union is completed by the cooling of said member and its contraction about the star shaped piece.
I claim:
1. A golf club having in its head a recess with upwardly converging walls. and an 1m pact receiving member consisting or a foundation portion, fastening means extending therethrough into said head, and a facing portion having a homogeneous union with the foundation portion, and covering the same and its fastening means, the edges of both the foundation portion and the covering portion finding bearin along the said converging walls, substantially as-described.
2. A golf club, having in its head a recess with upwardly converging walls, and an impaet'receiving member consisting of a foundation portion, fastening means extending therethrough into said head, and a facing portion havlng a homogeneous union 5 with the foundation portion and covering the same and its fastening means, the edges of both the foundation portion and the covering portion finding bearings along the said converging walls, and an insert in the covering portion, substantially as dc- 10 scribed.
In testimony vvhereof, I afiix my signature.
JAMES VICTOR THOMAS EAST.
