Description

April 1 1924.
N. c. FLANNERY APaori Filed Sent. is. 1921 MERLE G. FLANHEEY, VTLGSTEE, OHIO.
ALEUN.
hpplication filed September a of Ohio; have invented a new and useful ron, of which the following is a specifiinvention relates to improvements in ens; and particularly to the class adapt- 'iiO the use of operatives in beauty culture work, seam-stresses, nurses, and the like; its p cipal objects are to provide a neat, convenient, serviceable and easily made apron garment for such uses, and which has the superior advantages hereinafter set forth. It consists of the novel arrangement and combination of elements herein described, and as stated in the ap pended claims. I
My invention is illustrated by the accompanying drawings, in which similar letters and figures of reference indicate like parts,
Referring thereto, Fig. l is a front view of an. apron embodying thy-invention; Fig. 2 is a detail view of the back, side, and front sections extended flatwise; one side of the front section, which is in all respects similar to the other, is cut away as superfluous; Fig. 3 is a detail View of the front, and one side section of the apron, detached, a portion of the front section being cut away for better illustration of the extension of the side section.
in the drawings, A is the front, B, the back, and C, the side sections, respectively, of my improved. apron, the side sections being, right and left duplicates of each other, only one need be referred to for description.
1) D are pockets, and E E, the belt sections for the apron, and F F, the sleeves;
the latter are similar to sleeves heretofore used, and may be shaped to suit the taste, and as no claim is specifically made thereto, further statement concerning them will be omitted.
l-leretofore aprons have been gen rally made either of a single front member, or of a front and back member ioined together, and are as common as they are shapeless; and pockets have been sewed thereon in various ways, and belts have been attached thereto to suit the plan.
I am also aware it is not new to construct a garment with an upwardly extended flap in front over the waist thereof, and that 15, 1821 Serial as. access.
skirt fronts have been notched to provide pockets therein, and such I do not broadly claim i'ly improvement relates more particularly to the method of constructing and combining the front section A and opposite side sections C 0, whereby p anel front 0, is provided as an upward extension of the front section A, the lower or skirt portion of said front section being extended laterally in both directions to the back section and unitedthereto by seams s, s in such manner as to overlap the extended lower ends of the side sect-ions C, C, respectively The latter extend some distance below the upper margins of said lateral extensions where they connect by a seam, leaving said upper margins disconnected; and the margins of said side sections adjacent the panel front are united thereto, either solidly or detachably, as may be preferred for convenience.
By this arrangement the panel front a gives shape to the apron when put on, and causes it to hang well upon a form. The belt E is preferably made in two parts, each sewed upon opposite edges of the panel a, and their loose ends adapted tobe fastened together at the back of the apron in any desired manner. Pockets D D are constructed by extending the side sections C C down behind the upper part of the lateral extensions a, a, a suihcient distance for depth, and there stitching them together as aforesaid. The junction of the side section C with the panel front is best shown in Fig. 3, wherein the front portion of the pocket is cut away so as to show the location of the bottom of said side section at c, and its attachment along the dotted lines 123. The panel front a, being detachably secured to the adjacent edge of the side section C as shown at M, provides a convenient means for adjusting the apron, but no claim is herein made to this feature, except in combination with the novel construction aforesaid. 7
It is apparent that by the construction aforesaid, no extra material is required, nor any foldingof parts for pockets, and that the apron is completed by simply sewing the back and front sections together and inserting the side sections in the manner indicated in Fig. 2 by the several seams, 8',
s a The arrangement of the pockets is such that when the belt E is drawn around the body of a person, there is a convenient extension of the outer member of the pock et, and the cooperation of the panel section and belt make the garment more shape- 1y than has been heretofore possible. More over, said pockets are less liable to wear and tear, and are simpler and neater than it sewed on the outside of the garment or formed in cut away sections of the skirt as heretofore.
Collar and cuffs may be added to the apron, at pleasure, and size and shape of the several parts may be modified to suit the taste or needs of the wearer of the apron. 7
Having thus fully described my invent-ion, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is- 1.111 a garment of the character described, the combination of a back section, comprising waist and skirt portions in one piece, a front section comprising waist and skirt portions in one pie-"e, the upper or waist portion of the front section extending upwardly from the lower portion of said section as a panel front. and the lower portion extended laterally in both directions to engage the adjacent longitudinal margins of the back section, and a right and left pair of side sections intermediate the back section and the upper portion of the front section, on opposite Let88535 sides thereof, said side sections being extended downwardly some distance below the upper margins of ti e lateral extensions of the front section, respectively, underneath said extensions, and seams uniting said side sections, respectively to the back and front sections accordingly, "substantially as fset forth.
2. fin apron garment, comprising, in combination, back section, front section having; a panel extension at its top, and lateral extensions below said panel, a right and left pair of side se tions intermediate the sides oi said panel and the adjacent edges of said back section, said sid sec tions ex ending some distance below said panel, and underneath the lateral extensions of said front section, respectively, and seamed thereto; and a belt connecting the opposite sides of said panel, and adapted to surround said side and back sections; and the upper margins of said lateral extensions being disconnected from said ad- 'acent side sections for some distance sub-.
stantially as set forth and for the purpose specified.
In witness whereof, I hereunto set my hand this 23 day of May, 1921.
