To all whom 'it may concern.'
Be it known that I, HOWARD BARBER, la
citizen of the United States, and resident of Stonington, in the county ofNew London and State of Connecticut, have invented a" new and useful Improvement in Printingj Presses, of which the following is a specication. f
The object of my invention is to provide ,i
certain improvements in printing presses whereby two separate' .products may be delivered or a single product may be delivered.
A further object of my invention is to provide a printing press of the above character which comprises two printing mechanisms, each mechanism bein arranged to for printing two colors upon each side `or three colors on one side and one color on the opposite side of a single web.
I have 4discovered that it would beer;-` tremely desirable to provide aiprintin'g press"V in which one printing meehanlsm only need be used for printing upon both sides of a l only of aweb where a singleproductis de- Sii sired or the two printing mechanisms may be .used for printing one color on each side or for printingr two colors on one side of each of twoseparate webs where, a doubleproduct is desired, or for passing :oneweb through both printing mechanisms so as to deliver a single product having two;colors printed upon each side or three colors printed' upon one side and one color on the opposite side of the web. Theselresults may be accomplished by my' invention, a practical embodiment of which is represented in the accompanying drawings in which,
ligure 1 represents the printing press in v y side elevation with the parts in the osition which they aume when a singlev We is being printedwith two colorsupon each side thereof.
Fig. 2 is a detail tion, with the gears removed which connect'l the two printing mechanisms and the Aparts in the positionswhich they assme when arey being` printed with one color on each side of each web. y

`The v4printing Jpressherein shownl comnisms 'y each having two printing "couples, the `plate -cylinders of `the lower couple being denoted by land their. respective impression cylindersby "and (i. The plate cylinders of the upper.` printing mechanism f are denoted `by 5 andf and their respective impression `cylindersby? and 8J Suitable inking mechanisms 9,10, 11,12, are provided i i for-.the plate cylinders 1, `2, 5,6. The shafts x 16, of the` cylindersl, 2', 3, 4, are provided with gears 17, 1:8, 19,`and 20. The
gearsll' and 19 .are always in'rmesh and the gears 18and 20`are always in mesh. `The `gear 20 is4 brought into' and ,out` of mesh with the gear 19 and the geai'r 18-is`brought 'into andv out of mesh `with the gear 19, by.. `suitable adjiisting to be' hereinafter Vgears 25 and 27 by suitable adlustmg means v `to be hereinafter.4 described. Interineshing se', es, 24" of the @andere "gears29arid k30 -are fixedonl the shafts 15 land 23 of the cylinders 3 land 7, respectively.
Substantially similar adjusting devices are used for adjusting the plate cylinder 2 into andoutocoaction with the impression. cylinder 3; the impression cylinder 4 intov and out ofcofaction with the AVplate cylinder ,2;theplatef`cylinder5 into and out 'of-coism with. the shafts of the other l 'actinlwiththe'impression cylinder 7; and
coactioIrwith-lthe plate cylinder 5. I will therefore describe'one `only of these adjust,-
ling means, namely, the one applied to the thev impression cylinder 8 into and out of shaft' 2,4, 'of the impression cylinderA 8, as this .willgive a clear understanding of the operation 'of allof the other adjusting devices. Y
l The inner and outerbearingsl, 32, for the shaft 24 are mounted to` slide in the boxes 33. Inner and outer adjusting screws 34,: are provided, .which screws f` a ainstthe inner andlouterb'earingsl', 32.1.
worm gear 36; which meshes with a1 wormj'ff is geared to a' hand shaft 39 -by gears 40, 41. AThis a'r' 3T on a shaft 38,- which'sha'ft rangement permits the adjustment of both ends of the shaft without losing its parallelcylinder-s of the printing mechanism.
. In Fig,l 6 I have 'shown the plate cylinder 2 of the lower printing mechanism adjusted into coaction with the impression cylinder .3.- The impressioncylinder 4 of fthe lower printing mechanism has been adjustedout, of coaction withthe plate cylinder 2. In the upper printing; mechanism the platev Y "cylinder 5 has been -adjusted into coaction with the impression cylinder 7,' and the imypression cylinder 8 has been adjusted. out of coaction with theeplate cylinder 5. With the parts in this position, the one web is led through both printing mechanisms and two .,'colorsare'printed on the other side of the web in the upperprinting mechanism.
colors are printed upon one side of the 4web in thelower printing mechanism, and `two In Fig. 7,I have shown .the plate cylinder `v 2 ofthe lower printing mechanism adjusted into coaction' with the impression cylinder 3. The impression cylinder 4 of the lower printing'mechanism has been adjusted outof coaction with the plate cylinder 2. In
` the' upper printing mechanism the plate cylinder 5 has been adjusted out of coaction with the impression cylinder 7, andthe impression cylinder 8 has been adjusted into one color. up on each side of the web in the upper printing mechanism to accomplish the above stated result. It will also be noted that the web is led first between the plate cylinder 5 and impression cylinder 8 in the up er printing mechanism.
Iii F ig. 8, I have shown the plate cylinder 2 as adjusted out of its coaction with the impression cylinder 3 and the impression cylinder l adjusted into coaction with the plate cylinder- 2. I have also shown the plate cylinder 5 'adjusted out of coaction with the impression cylinder 7 and have shown the impressio cylinder 8 as adjusted into co'actionwith the plate cylinder 5. With the parts in this arrangement, two separate webs may be passed through the machine, one through each printing mechanism Vand having one color printed on each side thereof.
h fIn Fig. 9, I have shown the 2311s, adjusted into-coaction wit the impression 'cylinder 3, fand have shown the impression cylinder 4- as? adjusted out of c0actionl with the plate cylinder 2. I have also shown the plate cylinder 5 adjusted into coaction' with the impression cylinder 7.
, and I have shown the impression cylinder 8 as adjusted out of coaction with the plate cylinder 5. With the parts in this arrange- 'ment, two separate webs may be passed through the machine, one through each printing mechanism and having two `colors printed upon one side only thereof.
It will also be noted thatin the arrange'- ments shown in Figs. 8 and 9, if a half product is only desired, then only one of the printingmiechanisms need be used.
While I have. shown severalways in which my invention can be utilized, it is obvious that I do not wish to limit myself to these particular ways only but contemplate any way of utilizing the invention which can be obtained without a re-for1na tion and reconstruction of the parts.
