GATE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Apr. 24, 1917.
Application filed February 16, 1915. Serial No. 8,472.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, DURBIN A. SWARTSEL,
a citizen of the United States, residing at Cincinnati, in the county of Hamilton and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Gates, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements. in and has for its object to provide an end gate having a step thereon which will remain in a horizontal position regardless of the position of the end gate after reaching a lowered horizontal position or angular position below horizontal.
Another object of the invention 1s to provide a tail gate having a step thereon that remains horizontal when the gate is moved.
With the above and other objects in view I have invented the device illustrated in the accompanying drawings in which- Figure 1 is a side elevational view of a wagon body partly broken away,
Fig. 2 is a similar View showing the end gate lowered to a horizontal P08113101),
Fig. 3 is a bottom plan view of Fig. 2,
Fig. 4 is a vertical elevational sectional view of the end gate dropped to a lower most position,
Fig. 5 is a rear elevational view of the end gate shown in a lowered position and Fig. 6 is a detail elevational view of a step supporting bracket.
Like reference characters indicate like parts throughout the following specification and in the several views in the drawings in which 1 indicates a wagon body having an end gate hinged thereto by the hinge members 3, 4 and 5 secured by the rod 6. Mounted on the supporting bar 7 is a pair of brackets 8 and 9 having bifurcated right an gular ends 10 and 11 between Which extend the curved ends 12 and 13 of the links 14 and 15 the other ends of which are pivoted to the opposite ends of the rod 16 which is pivotally mounted upon the free ends of the hangers 17 and 18 the other ends of whlch are pivotally supported in the brackets 19 and 20 mounted adjacent the edge 21 of the gate 2.
Pivotally mounted upon the rod 16 at each end thereof are a pair of step supporting members 22 and 23 each of which consists of a support 24, upon which the step 25 is mounted, a right angular portion 26 being provided with another right angular portion 27 which is parallel to the part 24. In the corner 28 is an opening 29 through which said rod 16 projects, the members 22 and 23 being mounted on said rod 16 between the links 14 and 15 and the hangers 17 and 18. Projecting inwardly and at right angles to the part 27 and intermediate of the ends thereof are brace members 30 having their ends 31 turned inwardly at right angles thereto to engage the members 17 and 18 when the gate 2 is in any position below that of horizontal, the angular position of said members 17 and 18 being such that the members 24 will be held horizontal because of said engagement of the members 30 and 31 with said hangers 17 and 18. The right angular terminals 32 have their extreme ends 33 turned outwardly to engage the links 14 and 15 when the gate 2 is in a horizontal position whereby the step is held horizontally.
When the end gate is closed as in Fig. 1 the links 14 and 15 draw the hangers 17 and 18 down and push the member 24 and the step carried thereby to a vertical position as shown in Fig. 1, the members 33 acting against the links 14 and 15 to hold the members 22 and 23 in a substantially vertical position.
Because of the construction above described the step 25 will assume a horizontal position as soon as the gate 2 is lowered to a horizontal position and will continue to maintain said horizontal position regardless of particular angular position the gate is dropped to below the horizontal.
aving now described my invention that which I claim to be new and desire to procure by Letters Patent is I 1. In combination a vehicle, an end gate therefor, a step carried thereby adapted to fold and unfold with the movement of said gate, said step suspended from the free edge of said gate, hangers step is suspended, links connecting said hangers with said vehicle body, brackets to which said links are pivoted, the ends of said links connected to said brackets being curved, supporting members for said step, said members being pivotally connected to said hangers.
2. In combination a vehicle, an end gate therefor, a step carried thereby adapted to fold and unfold with the movement of said gate, said step suspended from the free by means of which said edge of said gate, hangers by means of which said step is suspended, links connecting said hangers with said vehicle body, brackets to which said links are pivoted, the ends of said links connected to said brackets being curved, supporting members for said step, said members'being pivotally connected to said hangers, said members having means for engagement with said links whereby the members will be held against pivotal movement in one direction.
